$350+$50 shipping = $400+free shipping. It's still $400. Tell me when it's $200 or less.

I believe the seller is the man himself.. the one who made this keyboard more or less. As a seller you all have to start somewhere. I think it's legit. But I don't see it selling like hot cakes any time soon either.

Going thru the thread, IOMANIA posted this keyboard on ebay before for $400 + $50 shipping.  Link to old auction here: http://cgi.ebay.com/TypeNow-Solid-Full-Metal-body-mechanical-keyboard-/270733120143?pt=PCA_Mice_Trackballs&hash=item3f08f3928f&clk_rvr_id=244268561177

It didn't sell last time, that's why the seller still has 0 feedback.

Hamblet posted internal pics before. It's literally a Leopold with an aluminum case. Don't waste your money.

It has a nice CNC carved case with Leopold internals made by Datacomp.
Just the case by itself easily worth the price. And yes I have experience with CNC.
I don't see what's the problem here.
I think buying this directly from Iomania would be even cheaper, like 350 bucks or something.

after going through the ebay description and pics, this board is awesome. Colored keycaps looks good on it too. lasered is not that bad :)

waste of money compared to the custom korean keyboards (356 series, The Cheat) which are unobtainable.  Case style is too big and ugly and not really a fan of the orange plate.  I still think we could produce something like an aluminum case(If someone on GH knows CNC) after looking at alot of pics on OTD yesterday of "The Cheat",  its a 3 piece aluminum body which has to cut on production costs .  It has a Flat bottom piece that is really just a plate a middle band type piece and then the top cover,  I think this is a much easier way to do it then producing a 2 piece version.

Rigs didnt you say you were taking a CNC class?

Is a "tenkyelss" board worth $350? The machining might be as sloppy as the spelling.

There's lasered and then there's lasered.

My Tactile Pro 3 is lasered and shows basically no legend fade after a year of heavy daily use.  My RK-9000 on the other hand is also lasered but the legends started looking dirty after just three months of light use.

For $400 I shouldn't have to gamble.

what kind of advantages does aluminium have over plastic anyway? Its cold and stuff.

I know that macbooks use alu, however the highend notebooks use carbon aka plastic. Also aluminium is about as hazardous as plastics are.

Carbon as in carbon fiber? Those must be expensive laptops since I know it can cost a ton to make carbon fiber.

They use carbon fiber reinforced plastic, and no it's not that expensive there are tons of things that use it.  Since there is no weaving or any complicated machine work involved it's cheap.
Title: Type now. Solid.
Post by: ~Blood~ on Wed, 29 June 2011, 04:56:36
Right, the thing thats so expensive are the weaved fibres they use for FORMULA1 racing cars for example.

Carbon isn't THAT expensive, but still better than cheap aluminium. And aluminium IS cheap, believe me. Its the cheapest and most used metal. You could also make a keyboard out of coke cans.
Title: Type now. Solid.
Post by: litster on Wed, 29 June 2011, 10:03:47
I guess it is the labor, time, and the up front design and tooling cost that make carbon fiber and milled aluminum expensive to produce.

Cheap?  Not exactly.  There is some work involved as the tend to use a sheet of fibers then it needs to be combined with resin and properly molded to right shape, usually with some vacuum machinery.  If that's not done properly you lose the beneficial strength characteristics, and if it's for something you're going to be looking at, there's few things worse to see than shoddy CFRP work.

No redpill, we're talking about carbon re-inforced plastics, not carbon-fiber sheets or formed sheets.  carbon re-inforced plastic is just plastic with carbon fibers mixed in that can then be injection molded just like any normal plastic.  Compared to woven carbon fiber sheet it's dirt cheap.
Title: Type now. Solid.

Hmm, well I've seen that term applied to a process very different than what you describe:

I dont get what the point of that would be, at the end of the day its still gonna look like plastic and feel like plastic.  The whole purpose of one of these kind of keyboards is that its Aluminum(looks really nice, checkout the 356 and Cheats on OTD) and that its even heavier then the mass made Mechanicals.  Some of the Korean customs even have spots where you can put an extra brass or steel plate inside or under the keyboard to icnrease the weight furthur.

Aluminium on my MacBook pro get's dirty really fast and is hard to clean. I think certain plastics are better for cases that get touched a lot.
That's why I think the Filco is superior to the Korean custom keyboards in terms of case quality(and looks, in my opinion). I'd still like one for the layout though.
Title: Type now. Solid.
Post by: alaricljs on Wed, 29 June 2011, 13:19:00
The process is not about what it looks like, it's about strength.  carbon reinforced plastic is stronger than plain plastic at a minimal cost increase.  It involves stirring loose carbon fibers into the plastic resin.

carbon fiber reinforced plastic (which is what the former should be called) from redpills video is more accurately called carbon fiber cloth reinforced plastic.  Looks cool and is waaaay stronger than carbon reinforced plastic.
Title: Type now. Solid.
Post by: ~Blood~ on Wed, 29 June 2011, 13:38:13
carbon fibres absorb shock and so on.. even carbon reinforced plastic does. golf bats are made from that kind of stuff too I think.

and I don't know about aluminium being labor-intensive lol, u think every macbook is carved by an expert craftsman ? i dontk

I don't have one to compare, so I can only guess. But I can compare the case of my MacBook, and I wouldn't want a keyboard like that, except for the layout.

Actually its not, the biggest keyboard enthusiasts on the planet all value the custom aluminum cases on the 356/cheat way above any plastic mass produced cases.  Just because apple uses some kind of ****ty aluminum that is hard to clean does not mean that it is the same style as used on these keyboards.  Arguing this is beyond ridiculous.  There is no better source for keyboard information then OTD and some of the other korean sites.

Of course they value their extremely limited custom runs which are almost impossible to obtain. Why would they make them otherwise.
I don't think that arguing this is ridiculous at all, because no one has that damn thing(except sixty I think) and everyone seems to praise it like the best thing since toasted bread.
Still I'd like one, but not for the aluminium body. I'm only interested in the layout.

I'm not sure about them being the best source of keyboard information. After all we got the #1 Keyboard Expert In The World right here (yes ripster, you may add this one to your list of references) ;)
All I see "over there" is fancy pics of stuff we can't get, anything other is irrelevant because I don't read Korean. So why would we care about the information we can't use?
Title: Type now. Solid.
Post by: Lpb45 on Wed, 29 June 2011, 22:43:37
obviously its irrelevant because YOU cant read Korean.  You seem to confuse "me" with "we" alot.

I dont see anyone else here backing up your ridiculous argument that a plastic case is superior to a custom made aluminum case and that anyone else would only be interested for the layout.
Title: Type now. Solid.
Post by: HaveANiceDay on Wed, 29 June 2011, 22:56:42
I did generalize a lot and I think it is a correct assumption that the vast majority in here does not read Korean, but if you do - godspeed man.
Majority is not equal to correctness, so I don't need anyone backing me up because it is my opinion. That's what I tried to say. You can't pass this off as a fact because it's only your guess against mine.
Title: Type now. Solid.
Post by: Lpb45 on Wed, 29 June 2011, 23:03:11
Now your just trying to argue semantics.

It may be your opinion but its definatley not everyones opinion or even the majority opinion.  But yes it is a fact a custom made aluminum CNC carved case IS better then a plastic mass produced case,  dont get me wrong I still think the filco's leopolds and topres all have fantastic cases they just arent on the level as the custom aluminum cases.
Title: Type now. Solid.
Post by: HaveANiceDay on Wed, 29 June 2011, 23:16:15
And now we can argue on which level each of them are. But first we would have to define the levels!
I don't see us come to an agreement on how far apart each level is from another so I'll just drop out here :)

I still don't think that it's a good idea to use aluminium for cases that get touched a lot, however cool they may look. From a practical point it's not something for me.

Post by: ~Blood~ on Thu, 30 June 2011, 00:12:45
They value the aluminium keyboards only because they are limited. That is because they are collectors in the first place.

Why would aluminium be superior to plastics, seriously? Look at german cars, do they use a lot of aluminium? I don't think so. Maybe for the chassis, but not for the parts that are touched, for example the stirring wheel. Stirring wheels are always plastic. Even the ones that look like wooden wheels are plastic. The whole interior is either plastics, leather or artificial leather.

Its like with the red switches, when they were unobtainable, everyone was like OMG CHERRY RED SWITCHES, now they are (almost) publicly available and people don't like them too much.

Compaq G80-11802 (MX Brown) uses a grey switch for space bar, it PISSES ME OFF.  way too stiff compared to the rest of the keys; I try to use a light touch on the browns and end up missing spaces.  Maybe it'd be better with clears?  I haven't tried them yet, still waiting for my Cherry POS board (what I assume you are taking apart) to arrive.

If I end up not using the POS board I might put a clear in the 11802, although I can't really see myself using it seriously due to the weird layout (bought it to try the browns as I don't really have any kind of store that sells a variety of mech. keyboards nearby to try)

I just picked this up today from the post office (it was supposed to come yesterday July 5th but I missed the post office guy signature.)

The weight of the keyboard is very nice and comes with multi colored keys (green shifts, red controls, and teal alt's). idk if this is some kind of placebo effect, but the browns feel nicer on this keyboard than they do on the Zowie keyboard I also own. The orange honestly isn't that noticeable. I feel a little more cramped on this keyboard but that's probably just because I'm used to the keyboards with the tenkey. The sacrifices you make :L

I already PM'ed the guy.  They should be waking up soon on their Korean Saturday morning ;)

I would be surprised if they would sell for less than $300 each even for a group buy of more than 10.  I will start a new group buy thread if he gets back to me and give me a reasonable price.

IOMania got back to me.  No discount for keyboards for group buy, only shipping discount.  Keyboard is still $350 + shipping.  No deal...

I would have been surprised if iomania did give a group buy discount. After all, it's their flagship keyboard that's targeted at a very few hardcore keyboard enthusiasts. And yes, they look like doubleshots do me too.

Still, makes no sense that they'll discount 2 boards to the same buyer but not discount a group buy.

The whole interior is either plastics, leather or artificial leather.

this is a really ****ty comparison

Very nice!  Thanks for taking the pictures.  Now, should I get an 87u, or this?  The 87u is actually more expensive now that leopold.co.jp's Bambi has dumped me.

Post by: mmmty on Tue, 12 July 2011, 10:57:49
Get this and be one of the very few. You already have 86U.
Title: Type now. Solid.
Post by: litster on Tue, 12 July 2011, 11:39:32
yeah, but I also have a set of new yellow topre keycaps coming that fits an 87U.  the set would work on my 86U, but the spacebar would not fit.  I could just have the whole keyboard with yellow keys and a white spacebar...  If I get an 87U, I will sell my 86U.

But I am getting off topic.  The Type Now Solid is indeed very nice.  But the Leopold spacebar is going to limit keycap options...

Pics are fine.  I'm trying to remember - how heavy is that thing?

At least they licensed the Windows key.    The Chinese clone companies don't even bother with that legal stuff.
Pretty damn heavy compared to the other keyboards I own.

But the weight is just oh so nice <3

Hmmm... I would consider getting one if it's around $350 shipped. $300 would be even better. I may have to sell a couple of keyboards to make it happen.

A Filco will not fit inside, the mounting holes are in different locations.
It was discussed in the Phantom thread.

Might want to consider a group buy for the cases...if they were $100 ea., you could get a TypeNow Solid for $200!

I'm not sure at this moment that one could fit a plain vanilla Leopold inside either.

It feels less hollow than my Filco 87 Brown with PBT keycaps. Filco sound = *TOCK TOCK TOCK * when bottoming out. Typenow = crispy *tck tck tck*. Release sound is more quiet too. And absolutely no *ping*.

Trying to figure out how you can sell a Leopold in an aluminum case for $400 is like trying to figure out why Ripster hates me so much and trolls my every post.

Foamy, crispy, not pingy. I'm still trying to convince myself I don't want it. HAVING this said, Filcos don't ping neither.
