Title: OTD Guys' Custom Keyboard The Cheats
Post by: litster on Tue, 28 June 2011, 10:43:36
The old thread closed: http://geekhack.org/showthread.php?17208-Korean-OTD-guys-New-custom-Keyboard-quot-The-cheats-quot

TypeNow.Solid has shown up on eBay again.  Will "the cheats" be available on ebay soon as well?  Any news on the "the cheats"?  Is it shipping in Korea yet?

Beautiful looking board but, seeing how the last thread went, I'm pretty skeptical.

I'd buy it if it's somewhere around $250.

What i really like about the keyboard the colored back plate behind the key kinda like the Rosewill RK-9000 (http://www.amazon.com/ROSEWILL-RK-9000-USB-MECHANICAL-RETAIL/dp/B004F38Y7Y).  I wish das or filco would sell a colored back plate as an accessory or a group buy.

I like the look of the colored plates, but unless it came that way, there is no way I'd be interested in swapping one out. Too much soldering involved. Best for me if the manufacturer made it that way as a limited edition board instead of a replacement part. If you're willing to do all the soldering, you might as well just have the plate in your existing board powder coated / painted on your own. You would have to do all of that soldering either way, and surely a paint job would be less expensive than buying another plate.

I'd pay WAY more then that if somehow one of the cheats became available

Cheats?

I would think that it would be made of a thin flexible plastic like flexible cutting boards as seen below.
It would have to be cut in order to fit certain boards i.e. a das version and a filco version.  All you would have to do it take off the key caps and lay the plastic down.   The bottom of the plastic inlay would be coated in a adhesive such as on vinyl (http://cgi.ebay.com/Adhesive-Backed-Vinyl-12x24-Gloss-Cricut-Craft-10pc-/280403247815?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item41495602c7).

The Cheat group buy has been over for awhile now. They've been all delivered to the buyers and most of them if not all have finished building it. Everyone's been posting pics of their finished keyboard recently.
Remember, these were shipped out as parts to be assembled by the buyer using whatever switch they want. Soldering is involved of course. They do appear in the market from time to time but are snatched up pretty quickly. No news on whether this will be available in the future through ebay.

jpz, doing it that way as an aftermarket accessory would make more sense. Basically just a die-cut sticker then. I bet you could find some die-cut sticker shops to do a pack of them for quite cheap.

How much do they normally sell for on the OTD market?
