Title: New forum rules addition
Post by: iMav on Fri, 01 July 2011, 09:43:17
Polls that degrade/insult/etc individual or groups of GH members will NOT be allowed.  (troll polls bring the perfect example).

Polls that edify other members will still be allowed.  :)

It works better if you don't talk about it.  It's human nature to be defensive, it's also human nature to believe the defensive person is completely at fault.

I do hope you read that entire thread and saw that most of the degradation/insulting came not from the poll, but from one of the socalled victims :P

I think that people like you used to call "****head" other users w/o any provocation should just hope in a better education.

I can't help but feel like I've been censored. That thread was epic and should not have been deleted. None of the other 3+ troll polls were deleted. It's not my fault Ripster went off the deep end.

You already did it in English and for me is more than enough.

9. Creating demeaning polls. Any poll singling out members in a bad light will not be tolerated. "Troll Polls" are a perfect example. 10. Any ongoing actions that make more work for the moderators and administrators or regularly annoy other members and require moderator action. We have hundreds of forum members to serve and can't spend a disproportionate amount of time dealing with problems caused by any one member. If your membership is an ongoing detriment to our community then your membership may be terminated.

I do hope that the creator of that troll poll got warned.

Why? You're the true troll.

And no, I didn't. U mad?

There have been many troll polls here in the past. I'm getting singled out cuz Ripster threw a hissy fit. That's lame.

And from looking around the forum today, its clear that this new rule has not addressed the true issue of trolling, which my poll did.

Isn't it ironic how those who rail against censorship are quite satisfied when it benefits them?

Or maybe "ironic" isn't the right word.

In any case, I never thought of GH as a democracy. I've been quite happy with it being an iMavocracy.
But an iMavAndRipsterocracy is something I never expected.

Something smells very bad at Geekhack today.

None of this would happen if the folks who dislike ripster's posts simply put him on their ignore list. But noooo, they have to read every single post of his and comment on it too. I challenge you, just put him in your ignore list for a month, or permanently, if his posts bother you for whatever reason.

Ripsters wiki pages are the single most objective and useful source of keyboard knowledge on the Internet.

Honestly, all the random chatter that goes on in the forum is useless anyway and anyone half intelligent just figures out which keyboard to buy by reading the wiki instead of asking for advice.

I couldn't care less if he threadcrapped on every single thread in the forum as long as his crazy OCD about collecting keyboard science persists.

The day he turns his attention to cars or marbles of baseball cards will be a sad day for keyboards.

If you guys think his playful trolling is bad for the forum you really haven't been on the Internet long. This is the most civil and intelligent forum I've ever been a part of (until some people deciding to start this drama for god knows why).

Seriously, chill out.

Best way to minimize trolling: use the ignore list and/or the "Report Post" button. DO NOT reply to posts you consider trolling in the public forum. It's like putting out the fire with gasoline. Nobody's man enough around here to use the ignore list? Just try it. AND NO PEEKING !!!

DON'T READ THIS IF YOU ARE A SENSITIVE GIRLY-MAN-

I thankfully missed out on whatever funky kerflufel occurred, as it was none of my beeswax, but I would really be less than thrilled if there were any substantial personnel changes because of it. I've really enjoyed Geekhack, learned so much, and tried to offer and share whatever I can without crossing lines. Eventually when I'm done with most of my projects, I'm sure my time here will diminish, but I'll be available via email if there is anything that someone might need or want to ask. I've met some really great people here. (Interestingly, I'm making a fundamental change in business, and may have involvement in the keyboard industry.)

One item I've noticed is that the peeps that get into these silly squabbles, more or less dish out the same they get. It takes two to tango.

Another item, such as, I've never attacked, made fun of, or disparaged another member (unless attacked first, and it's only happened a few times in 2 years and 700 posts). It's point-blank wrong to do it, and those that choose to be that way are fairly worthless. On several occasions someone has felt the need to call me names or be very negative to me personally. Who knows why? I certainly don't open myself up for that type of criticism. Even if I did there is no reason for someone to offer unsolicited negativity. I lashed back at those people on the forum out of surprise and frustration (I can be an idiot too). This forum, like the local convenience store, your office, a park, or a party, has people that some find undesirable. That's life. The easiest thing to do is to not respond, ignore, avoid, and minimize whatever the aggravation point is. Easier said than done. Personally, the next time someone has some dig to take on me, I would prefer it done in person, so I could teach that ******* a lesson in manners by filling his mouth with sand as I kick the **** out of him and **** his girlfriend.

All I want here at Geekhack is the opportunity to experience and learn, meet people, make cool ****, have fun, and live the good life. Anything other than that falls into the "Off-Topic" forum which can be for anything else, it's a throwaway subforum so you can crap without leaving the site. My continued thanks to almost all of you that make Geekhack what it is, and to the rest of you...piss off!

@input nirvana:
Much the same here. I come here for the fun stuff, not for incurring yawning attacks. Signal rather than noise. Ideally the Geek-O-Meter should jump right to 10/10. (Gotta draw one of these. Speaking of drawing, the recent keyboard pixel art thread was a prime example.) Lame trolls and personal squabbles typically have it firmly stuck on 0 so you may be excused for thinking it's frozen. You can fish that kind of carp anywhere.

I wouldn't equal the OT forum to a trashcan though. It does have music discussion, which has got to count for something.

Anyway, general reminder: If people start beating on each other, they might just be taking things a wee bit too seriously. Last time I checked you couldn't get married to a forum yet.

Only noobs support ripster? Ha.

Also, all I know is that when I signed onto irc a few months ago it was deluded people wasting money building rigs for that stupid bitcoin scam and basically insulting you if you asked a question that wasn't about some obscure keyboard made before 1995.

Now all I see are people who rarely post useful information or fill out any wikis all in a huff because they likely sat there in irc feeding each others anger and then hopping on the forum  and acting incredibly childish. Kind of  makes me sick and I hope it stops soon.

Ripster is a playful troll who also has written 98% of all the useful knowledge on this site that's it. Guarantee almost all the active people on this site are here right now are here because we have the best mechanical keyboard guide on the web.

Well, the Ignore feature is not a cure but it's a valuable analgesic. Try it at least for a week, then post results. It would be a very scientific method.
I assure you, after un-ignoring someone you can always go back and see what you missed. So you have a lot to gain and nothing to loose.

I think iMav should find a way to force on the ignore feature between members that don't get along. It would solve a lot of problems, especially since most members don't have the willpower to use the Ignore feature on their own.

More rambling thoughts:

-I'm personally mad a Ripster for never giving me a happy "Welcome to Geekhack" 2 years ago when he was still doing it. I waited...and waited...but I never slammed him. I'm such a good example to follow :)

-I'm thankful to Ripster for answering PMs I've sent with questions. Thanks man.

-I dig his sig! lol

-Sordna, thanks for for typing (I know you only have half of 1 finger, so it's a lot of work) some of the clear positives and points in this thread, you're a good guy.

-KL, I like your stuff, and I'm flattered you got my quote in your sig (maybe I'm blushing)...I think it's a scream. I'd love to see you move on to the things you do here that are so damn good. You're a good guy too.

-Some people in this thread are making personal slams involving how much time someone spends with their wife and child. Really? Probably as much as you spend stroking your little angry inch. Don't get personal. I may know where you live.

-A couple people in the thread have been cool with me. I love you guys.

-A couple people somewhere have been weenies to me. I hate you jerks, so go crawl off and die in a bush.

-Everyone here has the opportunity to make this fun, laugh at yourself sometimes, use it for the valuable tool it is, don't be a ****, say you're sorry if you cross a line. If you won't say it to your mother, don't say it here, 'cause no one really cares THAT much. This is no place to try and flex your little man-muscles 'cause you'll lose when I walk in the room. Imav could ban any 5-7 people and we would be done with it all, but he doesn't. Everyone here is a small part of something bigger (GH). Realize that.

-A couple more things, but it takes me about half an hour to type this and I'm forgetting what I read.

My goal is not to defend Ripster, he doesn't need defending. I'm want to defend Geekhack from this ridiculous BS that is downgrading the site.

You can't stop someone from doing/saying things you don't like. You CAN stop reacting, feeding, propagating the issue. If everyone does it, problem solved. Maybe those that actively complain should be banned, and the people that can take it in stride could just keep moving forward.

I said something about the "Off-Topic" forum being a 'throw away' forum for crap. Someone corrected me, and I needed to be corrected. I typed first and thought later. There is some really good stuff on there, sorry. I hope everyone knew what I meant, which is that you sort of need a designated boxing ring to pop-off a bit with no effect elsewhere.

Back to keyboards!

I love you.

@KL -

Actually always respected you as a useful resource on this site. Calling people who joined the site four months after you a noob and then insulting his opinions on the situation by basically calling him ignorant because you don't like like what he's saying, however, is rather sad. I really don't want to start having to use the Ignore feature here. This is actually the first I've even seen of ANY drama as I never leave the Keyboards, Reviews, Modifications, and Pictures forums as I only care about the keyboards and the neat things people do with them. I really don't care about little catty issues people have with each other.

Sadly, the Tapatalk app's neat "Latest" feature (similar to Forum Spy but even slicker and smarter!) lead me to this thread. I saw "New forum rules addition" and was originally not going to navigate to it but decided it could be something important. This is what I've run into.

Everyone just needs to chill. If you don't like ripster and don't think his 1,000s of lines of wiki knowledge are worth his playful trolling, just ignore him. It's in the forum. Everyone needs to step back, say "why am I spending hours of my life being angry at some guy who posts pictures of legos with keyboards when I could be outside drinking with some fine ladies or working on my own keyboard project?" and chill.

I'm out, see you guys in the non-drama threads where we talk about keyboards again.

I've already stated my case regarding "why". Read back in the thread if you haven't already.

They do. But they don't have the guts to turn on the Ignore feature. I challenge thee !!! As you said, it would be as if [the user on the ignore list] didn't exist.
(I took the liberty of replacing a username with context in the quote above)

No it doesn't. It is not fully implemented in the forum everywhere. For instance, a thread with just new post(s) by an ignored user is still reported in the list of "New Posts".
Every post by an ignored used is not invisible -- it is replaced by a message that there is a post by that user. A thread of 20 pages where more than half of the posts are by that user is still 20 pages long. A thread or article (such as a Wiki entry) created by that user will still be visible.

I have been using a Greasemonkey script to make messages by an ignored user invisible, but it broke in the last Ubuntu/Firefox update I got last night.

This thread should be about me. I want troll polls about me, wikis about me, keyboards made in my image (no **** pics please, that's been done), Q+A about me, shrines to me, dartboards with my pic on them.

Ooooohh!!! Look to the left! My kick-ass avatar! The highlight of this thread (besides me, of course).

Do I qualify to get picked on now? Does this make anyone angry and want to type something nasty? Am I pushing your buttons? If so, don't you see how ridiculous it is to actually acknowledge and respond to this, ultimately continuing the absurdity???

Think before you type.

If you type here and it's not about keyboards, then keep your god damn useless **** to yourself and any ****er unfortunate to be near your ignorant ass.

Any of us can do this stupid stuff ALL DAY. But why???? Take the higher path.

I still think there should be a dedicated thread topic in the OFF TOPIC forum "If you feel like an ass, post here and talk smack with each other", and just keep it OUT OF GEEKHACK proper. It seems to always take at least 2 people to engage, so if they can't ignore each other, go to the sandbox and swing there. No one else need be bothered on the site.

Of course they do.

THIS: Not on the first aggresive, rude, off-topic post, but with the SECOND aggressive, rude, off-topic post, and the peeps get sent to the sandbox by other members. or thread is closed or whateva. It needs to happen unless this stuff stops. It pollutes the entire site, serves no purpose, and is a waste of everybodys time, energy and respect.

If it's not good, and/or about keyboards, don't type it. How difficult is that?

Assume no one ever intentionally says anything to be a jerk. Even then, between jokes, play on words, misunderstanding, etc...it doesn't fly and someone gets feathers ruffled. That happens everyday in the real world. The key is to not make a bigger deal by propagating the issue. If you really need to, then of to a special place where it can be done. Not in the office, not at a restaurant, not in a classroom. Out in the yard behind the bushes. No one cares about your personal issues.

I'm convinced it's the SECOND person that is almost always the problem maker. You gotta embrace it, ignore it, work with it...but not ruin the site for everyone else. No one here is worth it. This site is only as good as the weakest, smelliest turd here. Don't be that turd. Raise the bar.

This rule only scratches the surface of the problem.

The problem consists of threads like this, discussing the rules and behavioral patterns one should follow, or posts which point out how some other post don't match the rules. Instead report the problem using the obviously-named button thing!

Too much meta is bad, kill it with fire!

I will admit that I created the troll poll partly for lulz, and partly because ripster's trolling of the Filco/Leopold ringing/ping issue was getting bad.
Real bad.

I do appreciate ripster's contributions to GeekHack and I believe that the site wouldn't be the same without him. Personally, I would prefer him to stay, but just not to troll so much.

Truthfully, I said some things I shouldn't have, and hid under the guise of a "character flaw". I'd like to apologize to the following people formally and publicly:

Ripster:
First and foremost I need to apologize to you. I wrote up a bunch of crap about you just because I was mad. That was wrong and I should not have done that.

input nirvana:
I had a bad day, so I took it out on you. You fought for what was right and I just portrayed you as criminal scum. I'm sorry about that.

Wibox/Blice:
I've attacked you on IRC over pointless ****, so I feel an apology is necessary here as well.

Rest of the community:
Simply for having to read and put up with my bull****. I'm sorry and I will not allow myself to step out of line again.

Whether any of the aforementioned choose to accept these apologies or not is solely up to the person receiving the apology. I won't be offended if you choose not to, since I did say some really nasty stuff.

Thank you for adressing issues you feel need addressing, it's the right thing to do. And thank you for acknowledging stupid wrongdoings done to others (it happens sometimes to everyone). I hope you feel better getting the burden off your chest, I sure know I would. I wasn't looking for an apology for myself, but I do appreciate it very much. I owe you one as well.

That's so moving. I have almost cried.

P.S. The answer to 1984 is 1776

For an "anarchist" who thinks that if everyone gets along everything will be fine, you sure do stir the pot A LOT.

Also, that's an extremely unrealistic approach to life. There are good and bad people everywhere.

Yeah, I like things spicy. There is always room for having some fun.
Defensive people sometimes bring out the troll side of others.
Having that said I have no problems with you.

What political flavor is realistic ? What religion ? What philosophy ?

Real life catholics don't mind to became saints, communist not mind to really do the revolution, and anarchist don't mind to live in a completely unruled society.

For the vast majority of people, ideals are just ideals, trends, driving lines.

For a communist a bit of more social equality is more than enough, like for an anarchist more relaxed rules sere sufficient to distinguish itself from people who think differently.

can someone translate that please?

I think that a QI higher than 60 is a requirement, although one higher than 80 is strongly suggested.

He is saying that a real anarchist wouldn't mind living in a ruleless society, but for most "anarchists" it's just an ideal and they would be happy with just more relaxed laws. His other example was with catholics- that in reality, trying to be a saint would be a real catholic, but for most it's just a guide and they don't really try to be saints.

tl;dr: RiGS is probably using anarchism as a loose guideline for living life, which isn't entirely unrealistic or offensive to The Solutor.

Did I get that right?

Be cautious Solutor, he claims to be a "Mensan" (lol) so his strategy is to try to bring you down by talking the same old stupid troll crap he and his ilk have brought into the primary focus on this site.
