Title: Loud spacebar on a Filco tenkeyless?
Post by: dannyboy on Fri, 01 July 2011, 10:06:23
I just ordered my first mechanical board that I didn't just buy off a friend, a Filco tenkeyless Majestouch 2 with browns.  The keyboard is picture perfect in every way but one.  The space bar is the only key i bottom out and when i do it makes this loud hollow thump sound.  Even when I don't bottom it out it has a loud hollow thump return sound.  Well that and the backspace key rattles a bit but that is likely me simply being oversensitive.  I was wondering if all filco tenkeyless browns had this loud thumping space bar or if it is just mine and I could use any suggestions on how to fix it.  I know there is no better place to turn for keyboard help so assist me in anyway you can, it would be much appreciated.

That's the acoustics of a large key on a plate mounted KB.  You can do all sorts of mods to attempt to soften the down stroke (dental bands or O-rings, EK sells foam pads, ... )  but I don't know of a method to soften the upstroke.  The rattling backspace can be alleviated somewhat by greasing the stabilizer bar.

Oh yeah, different key caps will also modify the sound of your board.  My PBT caps (on a Filco w/ browns) are a lot softer sounding according to my wife.  The only real difference with the space bar however is that it is a deeper tone, not so much that it is quieter.

Yeah, the PBTs will give is a softer clack overall. The spacebar used to bother me a tad but I'm over it. It's a solid TIME FOR ANOTHER WORD button now. :)

Ah, I see now so it is normal and getting a new pbt space bar should help some.  Thanks for the fast assist alaricljs and Chobopants. XD

I absolutely LOVE the sound of plate-mounted browns. It's actually kind of like therapy for me. My brown MJ2 isn't connected at the moment, and often I'll find myself just typing away on it to relax.

I agree daerid, I love the sound of all the board but the too loud space bar.  As a space bar is too loud for me you can pretty well intuit how I feel about clickys lol

That's how I feel. The "plunks" add nice punctuations to the "pluhs".

Although, I don't notice the difference between the normal keys and my spacebar as much on reds. Especially on the Poker. The spacebar on my Poker Red is actually almost silent.

I've noticed this on all the Filco videos I've watched but not on the WASD videos. The WASD sounds more solid and less hollow in general.
