Title: Happy 4th of July/Keycap Contest!
Post by: keyboardlover on Mon, 04 July 2011, 08:36:16
Happy 4th of July!

To celebrate, I've decided to have a little contest.

This contest is open to Americans only (sorry but I am concerned that SOME Americans might not be up to date on their Independence Day trivia!)

The prize will be this very patriotic doubleshot keycap set from SP:

NO CHEATING (Yes, that means Googling!) Honor system of course, but beware of karma!

To win the keycaps, you must answer the following three questions correctly:

1. Who did America declare Independence from?
2. Why?
3. In what year?

Good luck!

UPDATE redpill is the winnah!

I'm talking about the original Independence Day, not the inevitable future independence day.
Fixed the year for you. Nice try though!

I'm not from America, but from my general knowledge it's
1. British
2. Being oppressed in the form of taxes
3. probably 1748

I liked HaiiYaa answers, it will be a battle in cyberspace

not bad Xibal but 3) was actually 1776.  Aside from the tax thing (which really was the main problem) the colonists were also a little pissed about the British gov't forcing them to provide housing for British soldiers, the use of mercenaries to put down the sporadic rebellions that were occurring prior to the DoI, etc.
(I know, what am I doing posting a serious answer?)

1)The Crown of Great Britain
2)They felt their rights were being infringed upon, and they were being oppressed in several ways, including taxes, and the Quartering Act, as stated above.
3)1776

1) In case \KL is trying to get tricky here, obviously we declared independence from Britain, but much of the Declaration of Independence was actually directed at King George III himself, the precise reasoning eludes my memory but it's something to do with the way they viewed the monarchy.

2) The Declaration contained a long list of grievances, but many were related to unfair taxation & laws, and lack of representation.

3) 1776!

Happy Fourth all.

IIRC representatives of the colonists initially appealed directly to King George III about the issues they were having w/ taxes etc. thinking that he would be sympathetic and put things right, but instead he essentially flipped them the bird.  Hence some of the wording directed at KG3 personally.  (might as well read the whole document; it's not long and includes a specific list of various grievances that were unaddressed after appeal to KG3.  The magic of the interwebs!)

Yup, Great Britain, 1776, although shots had already been exchanged for a year or so IIRC, taxation without representation was the spotlight complaint although there are always other issues under the surface.  Thomas Jefferson and his peers told King George (forget which George he was) "you're not the boss of me!"

I'm Henry, the VIII, I am. Henry, the eighth, I am, I am. I got married to the widow next door. She's been married seven times before. And every one was an Henry. She wouldn't have a Willy or a Sam. I'm her eighth old man, I'm Henry. Henry, the eighth, I am...

Since a winner has been declared, don't have to hold off on posting this

it's a good read.  Almost as good as this one.

Yeah, our government is pretty screwed up these days...  but it could be a LOT worse.  The DoI and Constitution are incredible documents especially given the era in which they were written.

Curious trivia: Thomas Jefferson and John Adams both died on July 4th 1826 within a few hours of each other.
They had an interesting relationship, Adams argued passionately for the declaration of independence, largely Jefferson's work, before the Continental Congress in 1776.  They became bitter political rivals frequently clashing and essentially agreeing on nothing again during their active political careers.  Then Adams started writing long letters to to Jefferson and a friendly correspondence developed seemingly based on a grudging admiration for each other. Adams had stated "I will out live Jefferson.", and he did by a few hours although he had no way of knowing this as his last words indicate - "Thomas Jefferson survives".

I couldn't watch more than two people in that vid. Independence from mexico, indeed... But I also hope there were a bunch of people there that knew the correct answer and were just not shown because they wouldn't be the point of such a thing.

I'd have gotten the correct answer had I not been busy sleeping at the time.

Yup, first post in a while, haven't been keeping up with reading most forums.  Was reading today and guess I couldn't resist the historical reference.  Leno does a lot of embarrassing-to-watch interviews like that.  He did one on the 4th but I see NBC Universal saw fit to block the youtube clip of it, did still find it over on liveleak (http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=b98_1278463537) though.  Leno leaves in some folks who know the answers.  I have to believe there are more who aren't ID10Ts left on the cutting room floor since there is little entertainment value in getting the answer right rather then ignorantly & colorfully wrong.

You did have good answers too imho.  In the spirit of the contest, once I receive the caps I'll send you whichever one of the three you'd like.

You guys beat me.  I might have had a better chance had I not felt the need to include herman's hermits lyrics in my post but in the grand scheme of things a sense of humor might be more important than winning, ;-)  Congrats

noodle256 simply read keyboardlover's mention of the "inevitable future independence day" in the third post in the thread (http://geekhack.org/showthread.php?19492-Happy-4th-of-July-Keycap-Contest!&p=373017), was curious to see this & travelled to the future to check it out.  While there he saw your future (then past) post in the thread and once back posted a proactive response to it.
