Title: Unicomp boards are great!
Post by: westajay on Mon, 04 July 2011, 14:41:40
I just picked up a second hand Unicomp spacesaver board that was only two months old. Just want to say that I think it is a fantastic unit.. in response to some of the quality rumblings about Unicomp. I also think it looks great!

Would be great if they could do a production run of a tenkeyless model.

This has replaced my Razor Blackwidow as my daily driver. Looks like my preference is for buckling springs vs cherry blues.

Have an MX Brown board in the mail, so will see how that compares, for when I need to work in a more public space.

To the OP: That's awesome, congratulations.

To KL: For some reason, every time I read "Cool story bro", I think the poster's being a facetious prick. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt on this one.

Don't worry about KL.  He and I are still waiting for our keys.  DAMN THOSE BLANKS.

I like my Unicomp Spacesaver too.  It's just a little loud, so I keep it down in the basement when I feel like rocking out the old school games like Half-Life, Homeworld and Quake II.

Yes, Unicomp spacesaver is a great keyboard.

I read the NPR interview about how Unicomp were in some financial difficulty a couple years. Hopefully this is no longer the case, and they can continue to sell more. Would be a shame to see the buckling spring go.

There's obviously a niche of us out there who love the feel of these boards.

I don't get the supposed quality issues. Their boards stack up next to original Model F stuff, even. Any differences are pretty subtle.

After many months of reading the boards and reviews I finally took the plunge in March and purchased a Unicomp SpaceSaver 104 (as I wasn't sure the Customizer would fit on my keyboard tray).  I was originally going to get the Razer BlackWidow with Cherry Blues but the high gloss finish scared me off.  While the Unicomp ended up costing nearly twice as much (with shipping and duty to Canada) as the BlackWidow would have cost it has been worth it.  The fit and finish of my particular keyboard is amazing, this thing is crazy heavy and built like a tank.  No plastic flashing on the keys and the weighting is just about perfect as I tend to be a heavy handed typist.  This is a case of they really DO make them like they used to.  When I use other keyboards now they just feel like mush (mostly because they are just mushy rubber domes).  I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the Unicomp series of keyboards to anyone.

Lastly, I recently had the chance to try out the BlackWidow that I was originally considering and while it is quite a bit quieter I still prefer the feel of the Unicomp.
