Hey everyone i am new to this forum but i was just wondering why is there no section for rubber dome and membrane keyboards? The quality varies greatly from keyboard to keyboard. It would also be more inviting to new people like me. Personally i have a Microsoft Wireless keyboard 3000 v2 and it is terrible but i really like my logitech s510. The only problem is that the s510 is 3 years old and it has lost its snappiness.

hi
Forum: keyboards
dome, scissor, capacitive, mechanical, buckling-spring, laser, membrane, hall-effect, etc.
-
... 3 years old and it has lost its snappiness.
This is probably why there isn't a section for Membrane keyboards. They don't really hold up. There's nothing really captivating about them...Mechanical keyboards though, there's plenty of reasons to obsess over them.
EDIT: Well I guess there is a section... Just never checked it out apparently.

If there was a section for membrane keyboards, they would probably only appeal to new geekhackers for a moment until they try out a mechanical keyboard. They would then just abandon the membrane forum and regret posting anything in that section :)

Post some pics or ask about what you want. There are still some reasonable rubber domes out there. We are 99% all about mechanical keyboards here (and their long and storied history).
Welcome.
Check out the latest Logitech boards at Best Buy. At least you can try them out there.

The world is full of 15 years old RD and schissor switches keyboards that feel like new, as is full of MX browns and clears acrting like blacks and reds after 6 months of heavy use.
A RD room would be nice

Here is the overall keyboard section. Even mechanical keyboards do not have their own room, how rubber domes can?

Because given the percentage of elitist, every RD related tread is usually treadcrapped since the first reply, with the exception of the topre related ones.
A RD/Scissor room would be a quieter place where discuss about good keyboards even if they lack the "exclusivity factor"
-
I found think that it would be very important to this forum to review products that anyone would be willing to pay for. Then when they see the reasonable review they might look around for what it better and possibly discovering why mechanical keyboards are better. Also price should not be the pure basis for buying a mechanical keyboard. I saw a thread a few days ago when a person asked about scissor keyboard and there really wasn't much advice to be given.

If exclusivity factor is a major factor then why haven't i seen a thread on Optimus Maximus? That is the ultimate exclusive product. :)

Because is expensive.
Mech and topre are nice because even if damn expensive if compared to RDs (an average topre cost 100x the price of a cheapest RD available while a an average Ferrari cost 20x the cheapest car availble) are still a relatively cheap hobby: a topre cost is still the half of a decent smartphone or plasma tv (just to mention a couple of tech products).
So the art lebedev is an out of range product even for most of GH users, if you add the lack of really good switches, and the lack of appeall for the touch typism integralists, you can understand why that keyboard is hardly mentioned here.

It does exist, this is it.

Find the wiki/ ripsters review of the HHKB killer.

That's the thing, you're thinking that you have to buy a $160 filco or something to get a mech board. Truth is, I've probably spent less money on mechanical boards than you have on your rubber domes. An excellent example would be the iconic IBM Model M, which can easily be had for about $30 on ebay. Or found in a dumpster or saved from such a fate inflicted by people who just see an ancient relic. Or dell at101w's that can be had for about that same amount or less, even in the classifieds.
Why in the world would I want to sacrifice similar money on each different rubber dome board just to find one that will feel lesser to any of my mechs and only last a few years? On the other hand, there are people who have been using the same model m since they got it with a computer in 1985.
This board is just people who are sharing knowledge about various things that they have had and experimented with.

That was my keyboard right before I started hunting down my first mechanical keyboard, Model M's. After washing my s510, the keys now feel horrible to type on. I only kept it since I occasionally play games where my Model M doesn't work so well for some reason. I do like it's slimness though for my hands/wrists' position. Are you using the mouse that came with the s510?

Is not automagically said that a RD is better, not that will last less.
Anyway you are exactly confirming the need of a dedicated room.
Why one should test a dozen of RD to find a good one when correctly informed, like what happen with mechs ?

I have a very incomplete Wiki article that I'll get too...it's a Wiki so feel free to add anything.
