Title: Loose Cherry Keycap
Post by: daerid on Sun, 10 July 2011, 14:50:17
So on my Poker with reds, my left Ctrl is a little loose. If I press it and let it pop up a few times, it'll pop right off the stem.

There anything quick and dirty I can do to fix this?

In practice, it's not really an issue since I don't really type that way (letting the keys snap upwards), but I'm a bit anal about stuff like this

You just need a tighter joint connection between the keycap and stem. You could coat the inside of your key with something to make the opening smaller. I use to put tissue paper in toys when the joints would become loose but I don't think it will work well here

Yeah, just found out it's happening on my tab key, too :( Maybe I should just see if I can get some PBT poker caps from qtan

Edit: make that most of my keys, what the hell. KBC quality control department FAIL

I wonder if it could be temperature related. Is it really hot for you right now? Also do you have the ABS or PBT keys?

They're ABS keys, and it's sitting right next to my Filco Brown and Filco Red, both with ABS keys and don't have that issue. Plus, my Poker w/ Browns doesn't have this problem. Think it's just a bad batch.

I suppose you do a lot of exchanging keycaps. With use, the joint connection become bigger and the keys feel loose.

Is it the right time to buy some new keycaps?

I'm thinking I'll buy some engraved black PBTs for it, but this was a problem before I ever pulled a single key off of it. I think it's a small manufacturing defect. No worries, I was planning on getting new caps for it anyways.

Loose cherry eh? So not a virgin after all. I got some white engraved pbt for my Poker, they are much nicer feeling than the stock by far. I also like not having all of the 2nd layer legends all over. It makes it look less busy.

I don't mind the busy look, and actually prefer having the legends, at least until I get used to the layout. I'm saving my white engraved for the MJ2 Brown -10key.

This happened to me all the time on the Steelseries 7G, so annoying.

Put a tiny square of selotape (sticky side down) over the stem and refit the cap.  You'll have a harder time removing it in the future, but you can't have everything.
