Title: Who has the thickest keycaps?
Post by: mr_a500 on Mon, 11 July 2011, 13:37:06
I have a general hatred of modern, thin, flat, cheap keycaps. My favourite keycaps are the vintage super-thick doubleshot keycaps - the thicker the better. If you've got awesomely thick doubleshot keycaps, post them in this thread!

Here are some from my collection:

Kaypro II (blue keys are the thickest I've ever seen)

TRS-80 Model III
(http://img546.imageshack.us/img546/1457/trskeycaps.jpg)

DEC VT-100 (relatively thin, except for the one on the bottom right)

WYSE WY-50 (actually, not that thick but OK for a post-84 keyboard)

TI-99/4a (early version)

The IBM Model F single piece keycap is a bit thick and sturdy, but it's not doubleshot.

Those Kaypro keys aren't Cherry MX compatible are they?

Those look like incredible hulk compared to SP caps.  Are there *any* other manufacturers doing doubleshots other than SP?  (since Cherry stopped anyway)

Doesn't look like it.  Probably only the Wyse without modding.

The Wyse caps work with Cherry.  The Wyse keycaps that I have been retr0briting this weekend came from a Wyse terminal keyboard with Cherry MX black.  There are at least 2 different kinds of double shot caps with two different thicknesses.  The picture from mr_a500 is the thicker kind.  Newer (or not as old) Wyse keyboards have double shots with thinner sidewall, just a tad thicker than SP.  I have both kinds.

Do those SP custom keycaps only come in smooth or are they available with textured tops? (like the Kaypro, TRS-80, TI)

The uberswitch, of course.

That blue Kaypro probably is a bit thicker though.

Fentek just uses Signature Plastics.

Buy a set of these and she will forgive me.

We use several vendors, as well as our own in-house tooling and printing.  Sometimes it is just faster to farm out a job than recreate it ;)

Ah... I forgot about this thread. Here are Victor 9000 keycaps:

Check out the height of the function keys compared to a Model M:

IBM beam-spring, I presume.

I did have some vintage Cherry keys that were twice as thick as DS Cherry MX keys, and twice as high, but I gave them away and don't have a good photo.

I got them too. Thickness is really unmatchable, just that they not really suit/fit modern board like FILCO and so on with high profile.

They're higher profile than filco? I poked around their website, but I couldn't find that much information (pricing, etc) on their keycaps.

No Devlins are lower, like height of Cherry home row I think. They only do that 1 profile for all keys as far as I know, at least for their stock keys.

Nope, they do make keycaps of other/normal profile. At least this keycaps are made by Devlin.

Hmn, I contacted them before and they told me only had that one style, like flat profile for pos system. Perhaps they just had no other stock at the time.

The flat style really works out for Dvorak users like me. That's why I like IBM/unicomp so much.
