Title: Official Geekhack Typing Speed Leaderboards
Post by: joysick on Wed, 13 July 2011, 23:33:02
What kind of dedicated keyboard forum makes no mention of typing speed?

This thread is designed to discriminate the elite touch typists to the progammers to the average everyday forum contributor. This thread will go off of a "pics or it didn't happen" basis, simply post a picture of your typing speed, and you will be added to the leaderboards.

edit: added keyboard section so when you post your score post what keyboard you did it on as well

Why am i doing this? Becuase I am going to Michigan for six days and need something to do. :)

This is a rather terrible score, I'm on my laptop keyboard and am capable of doing well over 85, but as of now this will have to do.

That's sort of a horrible typing test, since it uses a random collection of words with no relation to one another. Passages from a random novel, or a song, or some such makes a more realistic test.

At least, that's my opinion.

It's almost a horrible test for me because I am already reading the next two words while typing my current one and each time I reach the end of the paragraph to trigger a new paragraph of text I have to slow down and reposition my vision.

My favorite is still typeracer dot com

Since this is a keyboard forum, you'd think that we would have ensured that at least one of the typing games in the arcade would be revered as typing speed metric.

Just an idea.

Here you can test how fast you are. Just type in the words. Are you faster than all the others? A nice side effect: these are the most used english words. Every time you try to beat the score, you improve your typing speed :)

thts what it says at the top, if you have a better one by all means im for it

edit: that sounded kind of rude lol, it wasnt meant that way

No worries, I didn't take it that way. And I'm notoriously hard to offend, according to my friends.

It isn't that they aren't commonly used words, it's that they are in a random order. It's almost like it doesn't matter that they are words, to your brain. I bet they could just put random strings of characters up, and you'd get basically the same score. Well, slower because you couldn't focus ahead, but you get my point, hopefully.

Anyway, the scores are periodically reset. I think monthly, but possibly more frequently.

Must have been the consecutive posts? It's back now, anyway. Just thought it was weird.

Love the reaction, though.

On topic, when I get going, I type over 100WPM, but I almost never type that fast. Most of my typing just doesn't require it, and in fact, I can't type that fast because, well, I can't think what to type that fast. Most of my typing is code, after all, so certain idioms come out super fast, other times, I'll type a line every few minutes, because I'm not sure exactly how to go about what I want to do.

It's just an interesting dichotomy. Some of the best, most productive programmers I know can't type worth a damn, really, but they don't have to if they think it through properly and rarely make mistakes. After all, for most devs, debugging is what takes the most time.

Typeracer is more fun, but sometimes has passages that are too short.
I actually liked the OP's test though, no waiting involved.
Got 90 WPM on the first try with my Kinesis Advantage (cherry reds / Dvorak layout):

Also tried it on an old macbook pro (in QWERTY layout) and got 67 there.

I haven't done any racing games in a while. I love to type really fast, but I had to stop playing typing games because it wasn't helping my RSI symptoms at all. :(

Before I quit, I managed to score an average of 118wpm on Typeracer (username: smirking) and I'm still #55 in the top 100 of the 5-minute typing test on hi-games.net.

Now, if anyone here gets cocky about their typing speed, you should know that one of the GH members is Sean Wrona (arenasnow), the winner of the Ultimate Typing Championship (http://www.ultimatetypingchampionship.com/). He won with a 163wpm performance and has a YouTube video of him clocking in at 212wpm in a Typeracer match.

Nothing better than that to stay humble ; )

I know I'm far from the fastest: I can go up to 120wpm under caffeine on typeracer.com but typically I'm only around 100 wpm.

Just tried and did 91 wpm on that horrible test (can't easily see the next word before a new "page" starts, which really slows thing and messes up thing, can't correct mistakes --I'm wired to correct mistakes instantly and so I'm penalized twice if I'm not at 100% accuracy on that test--, words unrelated to each other, etc.).

Bowing low to nocturn4l3030 for his nice score and bowing even much lower to hella: 116 wpm is cool, especially on an M15 (I own two mech split keyboards but I'm dreaming of a M15... Maybe I should sell my NIB MX-5000 and then use the money to buy a M15).

Just did it quickly on my stock Filco blue and got 94. Would have been faster I think but that line switch really throws me off and I was a little self-conscious about the sound of me typing like that (I'm at work) so I wasn't going all out. My Typeracer WPM was ~110-120 but it's no longer available on Facebook (that's how I played) so I can't reference it.

I'll do a few more over lunch and we'll see how I do.

I hesitate at every line switch on that particular website. On the other hand (!) I think by using the most common words in the language it may also have a slightly shorter than average word length, relative to passages of meaningful text written by non-morons; at least it seemed so whilst I was typing. I clocked 97, which is average for me when I'm transcribing something. I don't think I've clocked any test above 110wpm. I might try to teach myself proper eight-fingers-on-letters technique (I use six) but I have no need to go faster, and RSI is only an issue when I use keyboards other than my own for extended periods. (Smartphones are the devil's work.) Real-world speed, typing what I'm thinking, I have to be writing a highly-motivated diatribe for anything more than about 70wpm to matter. If I was still writing code I'd probably need even less.

I think this improvised meta typing game would be a lot more fun if we each did one round on the ****tiest keyboard we could find and then did one round on our daily driver.

I tried that when I got an ASUS Netbook and I was really bemoaning the shrunken nature of the netbook keys. Well, it turns out that as much as I hated that keyboard, it barely affected my speed test results. I was 100+ before. I was 100+ after.

Yes, that's what's screwing me up too. I can't read far enough ahead to get it in my brain to avoid making mistakes. So far, the best I can do is 60 wpm.

I just tried typeracer.com, but the countdown starts before it's even ready to start accepting keystrokes. I have to click on the box, wait a few seconds, start typing and still it misses the first character and says I have a typo.

Make sure you have good posture, learn to be as relaxed as possible, and just keep practicing.

Also, while 70-75 wpm isn't going to win you any speed medals, it's nothing to sneeze at. You're already at a very functional typing speed that will give you an edge over most people.

Some people are always going to be more natural at typing than others so if you can't ever get above 75 wpm, you might be able to blame your mom or dad for not having good typing genes to pass on to you.

You shouldn't need to click the box, it should disappear on its own and the cursor should default into the typing box.  If not, it's probably a browser issue.  Which do you use?

I think this improvised meta typing game would be a lot more fun if we each did one round on the ****tiest keyboard we could find and then did one round on our daily driver.

I tried that when I got an ASUS Netbook and I was really bemoaning the shrunken nature of the netbook keys. Well, it turns out that as much as I hated that keyboard, it barely affected my speed test results. I was 100+ before. I was 100+ after.

I had 92 on a Model M versus 102 on a Topre, big difference was missed words, more typos on the Model M when trying to type fast.

I think we need to do a test where we add up scores for 2 layouts ;-)
I average 90 on Dvorak, 60 on QWERTY. I wonder how Colemak users do when they switch back and forth!

God, I'm studying for board exams and I'm spending way too much time messing around.  Things I normally don't like to do get done, and once that's finished I move on to more useless tasks.  No wonder why the girlfriend says the house is cleanest when I'm studying ;)

I tried a few more times and it looks like I don't have to click in the box, but I still have problems with the first character typed being ignored. I think it is a browser problem. I see a box that says, "Warning Something unexpected just happened. You may need to Refresh the browser page if TypeRacer stops working."

I'm using Firefox 5 on OSX 10.5 (PPC).

I'm using a french dvorak layout and actually, I'm slower with the french test.
That makes me believe that they count words as… well, real words, while they shouldn't (wikipedia link above).
French words are longer, that makes sense.

I just did 47 WPM on typeracer on my fujitsu laptop. I'll try the Unicomp later, and the WASD (cherry brown) when it arrives.

Dvorak layout of course.

Screenshots to come when I figure out how?

Since I don't really touchtype, I am pretty sol,w however, I feel like I'm significantly faster when I'm typing something I'm thinking about. Out of curiosity, is there a program (online or otherwise) that will track my paper-typing speeds for class?

For me its a mental thing. Typing on rubber domes, I feel like my fingers are being glued down to the keys. It's just a really unpleasant feeling.

Mechanical don't have that sticky, mushy feeling and it makes feel like I'm typing faster and in most cases I am 10-20wpm higher.
