Title: SteelSeries 7g
Post by: M4TE on Fri, 15 July 2011, 16:58:21
Tomorrow I'm going to go pick up a SteelSeries 7G used for $55. Good deal? I'm pretty sure that it's a great deal because the suggested price for a new one is around 140 dollars. I play Counter-Strike 1.6 so and I'm not a frequent typer of long papers and such so I think it would work great for me. In the forums I read up about it and it says they use Cherry MX Black switches which are the best for gaming.

Any comments on the keyboard and the deal?

That's a good deal! I'm sure you will like it for CS.
You can always buy KBC keycaps for your 7G, a special set exist for them.

Oh no...
I just read up on how the 7G uses PS/2 connectors. I know it's better but my laptop doesn't have a PS/2 connector.
It does come with a PS/2 to USB adapter, but I've had problems with PS/2 to USB as my other post suggests
http://geekhack.org/showthread.php?19921-PS-2-To-USB-Adapter-Problems
I'm hoping the adapter they provide is better than the one I bought. Well it better be.
Anyway, I'm picking it up at a garage sale tomorrow so I'll just bring my laptop and test it out there.

Anyone else have the same keyboard and would like to tell me pros and cons would be appreciated. Thanks

I have the 6gv2 and I can tell you the keycaps absolutely suck. Other than that I like it a lot.

7G for that price is a ridiculously sweet deal.

My first mechanical keyboard...

I was just wondering, what do you mean when you say they suck? And also "RiGS" said that I could buy KBC Keycaps. What's the difference?

They're made of PBT, a material much superior to ABS in its durability and feel.

I tested out a 7G last week and found that the black switches took a little too much force to press and that after hours of gaming I'd imagine my fingers would get tired. maybe I just have weak fingers. you should try out the black switches before sealing the deal. sounds like a great price if you like the feel of the 7G.

$55 is a great price for any mechanical keyboard. You can always sell it here if you don't like it.

Well the white becomes dirty and shiny fairly quickly.  Heres a link to the keycaps wiki for the 7g http://geekhack.org/showwiki.php?title=Key+Reference+-+Pics+and+specifications+for+various+manufacturers+keys#SteelSeries+6GV2+7G Also I'd check out the key material wiki http://geekhack.org/showwiki.php?title=All+About+Keys

For that price you really can't go wrong. If you have any problems you can always get these http://geekhack.org/showthread.php?17080-lol-another-group-for-KBC-7G-keycaps (I believe this is the set RiGS was referring to)

Even if the black switches are stiff to you at first. You should buy the keyboard because of the price, and just get used to it. You may decide to use it a lot, or you may decide to use it only some. Either way a good deal for that price.

If the OP is coming from rubber dome I doubt this will be a problem.

It's just reasonable deal, the keyboard is sold for something like 75€ brand new...

If you like it it's a good deal, if you don't like it and you are buying just because the offer, think twice, an choose something that fits your needs better.

I think you confused it with the 6gv2. The 7g is more expensive.

Yes 7g is a bit more expensive

Anywhay 6gv2 is more or less the same board with a better layout minus the wrist rest

I disagree about the layout. The 7g has the better layout. It has the correct full-size shift.
Sadly it has a short backspace, though it's easy to remap it with the capslock.
Also the KBC PBT keys were made for the 7g layout.

I prefer, by far the 6gv2 layout.

It's shift area is even larger than the one present on the ISO boards but has still a default sized backspace, while the 7g has a tiny backspace and the two huge shift from ANSI layout.

Then if one start to remap keyboards any mod is possible in both of them
