Title: Doubleshotting a Raptor K1 - a long shot?
Post by: foliolio on Tue, 19 July 2011, 10:22:35
I have a German layout Raptor-Gaming K1 which - as nice it is - is begging for some doubleshot keycaps. Now, ideally I'd like to go about it by fitting it with some grey/beige/white Cherry corp doubleshots, but does a suitable donor-board excist? The problem seems to be not so much the short right shift, but row 1 keys that are all small... All the grey/beige boards I have come across sport the normal sized modifiers and/or no Windows keys. I'm in China atm and I could get an ISO-layout G80-1856HQMGB off TaoBao... But they are black. Wat do?

Thanks in advance.

G80-1800HAMDE and HPMDE boards (from the '96..'99 time frame) do at least seem to exist. I have no idea where you'd dig one up though.

Also keep an eye out for the 7000, it's the POS version of the 1800. Usually G81-7000 aka MY7000. They're mostly lasered, but double-shot versions do appear on ebay from time to time.

Meanwhile... how much is that 1856 on taobao?

Cheers for the input guys! There are a few ISO (English) 1856s on TaoBao, at "85 - 90%" condition, starting from 238 Yuan (some 25 Euros).

There are also a few NEW MY1800HAUs for 150 Yuan a piece, but regrettably they are ANSI layout. At the moment my plan is to pick one of these MYs and use all the caps I can, and also pick one 2nd hand MX1856 for those ISO-critical keys. How suspectible are these Cherry corp doubleshots to getting shiny? The "85 - 90% condition" part worries me a bit since the attached photos are not of much help.

Still, the ultimate plan is to go the grey/beige route.

Edit: OR I could get me a G80-9009HAU off TaoBao since that has DS-caps-a-plenty... The "Attach" -key would seem to be of proper length to be used as right shift, but would the profile fit as well? Similarly, could I use the plentiful single width grey ones as the 1st row keys or do they differ in profile?

I would still be short a fitting spacebar. :/

Some pretty interesting custom boards for Reuters. $75 from TaoBao isn't too bad a deal at all. If I could make sense of how the screen works I would be very tempted to buy it. I need an lcd like that for a project I'm working on, and lots of interesting doubleshot keys are always good. There should be plenty of single unit keys with a matching profile to use on your bottom row. The Attach and similar keys profile would not match though. It has a top row profile. The 1800 would be a better match for a lot cheaper.

AFAIK the only doubleshot Windows key is the one from Group Key Buy One (not sure about 3, never did figure that one out completely).

The RicerCar SPOS one isn't bad.  Still haven't gotten confirmation how these are made.

I'll bet that RicerCar SPOS key cap is printed (though, maybe it's lasered). The Windows icon isn't anywhere near as white as a Cherry doubleshot should be.

Also, I have a set of doubleshots from a G80-8113, and the Windows key in my set is either lasered or printed, and greyer than the other key caps - similar to the SPOS key cap in the picture.
