Title: Question about the Steelseries 7G
Post by: Mitchellderp on Fri, 22 July 2011, 16:15:23
Well, 2, actually.

1) Is it as good as the Razer Blackwidow?

and

2) WHY DOES IT USE THE BIGASS ENTER KEY LAYOUT?

1) yes, but it is different, primarily with its linear Cherry Black switches vs. the BW's tactile/clicky Cherry Blues.

2) IIRC its a format compromise

If you are put off by the format but still like the 7G's features I recommend you check out Thermaltake Tt eSPORTS MEKA G1.  Its functionally the same product, sans giant enter key shenanigans.  Heck, it might actually be nicer overall, SteelSeries cut some corners with their keycaps.

It is? I thought that it was a minority layout for a reason...

I'm currently using a Blackwidow, just considering getting another mech at some point. Has anyone had any experience with postage from unicomp to the UK?

It is?

It's a good compromise between the US liking (lately) stuck to the wide enter and the Europen and Japanese one that are used to the taller one.

BTW the 7G sacrifice the backspace while the 6gv2 doesn't, so I consider a downgrade the move from 6gv2 layout to the 7g one.

The 7g is the older model.

Btw the 6gv2 sacrifice the right shift. That thing is bigger issue than the backspace at least for me.
Btw SS is a Danish company, and the BigAss Enter is the standard layout there.

I'd be surprised if Danish layout weren't some standard ISO affair with the corresponding inverse-L Enter.

BigAss Enter is a plain ol' manufacturing compromise (admittedly not the most elegant one) which allows using the same PCB layout for all language versions, which in turn saves money. The resulting shortened RShift would also annoy me though, just like other people are annoyed if Backspace is shortened instead.
