Why the 86u and not an 87 key version?
-
i'm no realforce expert, but i think the 86k has 87 keys, it just refers to the model version? the 87u is newer
-
There is about $100 difference. And because it's harder to get 87U.
-
Which model has the quiter keys? Aparently topre keys have gotten a bit quiter?
-
The 87U has a silent version.
-
Which of the tenkeyless realforces should I consider? What are folks favorites?

Mostly because Leopold doesn't allow anywhere outside of Korea/Japan to sell them - making it seem like it's super hard to get.
Bah - I think I will be contented with just the 86U. Booya Leopold

87U has an extra Windows key on the right side and an embedded numpad that 86U doesn't have. The embedded numpad acts much like IBM Space Saving keyboard. 87U has more variations: variable weight, all 45g weight, all 55g weight, and the variable weight has a silent version, in white and in black.
Check out the topre wiki (http://geekhack.org/showwiki.php?title=Topre+Realforce+Reference+-+all+things+topre) for more information.

Thanks everyone. Do folks like the silent version?

I have the 86U but if I could have purchased the 87U in the silent version I would have gone for that and paid the extra premium. With the 86U I ended purchasing a separate number pad for when I'm working on spreadsheets so I ended up spending the extra money anyway. Don't get me wrong, I do like the 86U but if I had options of both, I would definitely go with 87U.

The regular Topre is already pretty quiet, I have the 55g version of the 87UB and I like it a lot. It feels lighter than MX Blacks, much less tiring, yet you can strike them confidently without a harsh bottom-out.

I absolutely disagree with you, it is only true when you bottom out the mx blacks as well.
However it is a lot easier to not bottom out mx blacks, and as a result it is quieter and less tiring.

I haven't tried the silent version, but I think it probably worth paying some extra. I don't like the rebound sound of the keys on the normal version.
I find it annoying, though probably most other Topre lovers don't share this opinion.
Feel free to vote in the poll above.

What about 45g-55g -vs- varied... ?
