Title: It's magic
Post by: mmmty on Sun, 24 July 2011, 16:09:22
I don't know if this has been posted before but Mr. Clean Magic Eraser is actually good at cleaning shiny spacebar. I just tested this and it works!!! I used my Filco spacebar for the test. I scrubbed it for about a minute now it's not shiny any more.

Yah, I knew about this for the MacBook pro's glass touchpad. Tried it on my keyboards and found out it works as well :)

I tried it on a Dell touchpad earlier this year and I think it messed up the touchpad.

I wonder how long it'll last, though.

Until you wear it smooth again. The eraser is a "microabrasive", or whatever the marketers are calling it, so it's actually roughing up the surface again.

Good find though, may have to try it out on other shiny plastic.

Do you need to wet the pad before scrubbing? Or did you use just it dry?

EDIT - Nevermind lol! just picked up the pad and it's soft enough to use dry.

I've been using them to clean dirty boards when I get them. They clean so much faster than any other method. Besides removing the keys and the case and sticking it all in the dishwasher, anyway.

But yeah, that would be like using super fine sandpaper. I'm not particularly surprised that this worked. I would expect to lose lettering on keys like filco ones if you did it to the keys too.

But have you tried using it in the shower with liquid soap.

That's good if you want blank keycaps.

Magic eraser! Nice! Maybe Ripster should put this in his keycap wiki. I found a thread this idea is being discussed, but they didn't actually try it:

It should work well with shiny ABS Topre spacebars.

He also keeps saying this is no longer the case, and Topre changed its distribution policy.
