Title: Geekhack Cousin: Deskthority Registration?
Post by: rightbraingeek on Mon, 25 July 2011, 10:51:14
Anyone know a Board Administrator at Deskthority?  Registered and never received an email activation but can't find an email address or link to contact a Board Administrator.

I think threadcrapping was the issue at stake. Ironic given this context.

@OP - ygpm.

Me thinks you are already trying to get the Newbie into BIG trouble!  :)  Be gentle - I've purchased 4 mechanical keyboards in about 30 days and my wallet's "fallen and can't get up!"

Great Wiki layout and the keyboard wiki has lots of potential.

You used to make fun of their keyboard wiki a lot.

DT is pretty dead as far as I'm aware so...
Last I recall the people who bought it went silent after their whole "website purchasing business" didn't go well, so I doubt the people running it even remember they own the site.

I faced no problem registering on the Deskthority forum. I had a account and created one more account just now to check whether i will get the verification mail or not. I got the verification mail this time too.
Why not try using an Outlook account to register on that forum?

This is common.

I had this same issue two years back, and they didn't get back to me about that profile. Tried again one year later with a different username and that time they let me in.

I guess the strategy is to try to register every year or so and eventually you'll get lucky??? There's a few good users over there that don't seem to be over here, so it's worth dipping into both communities... if they ever open the door, of course.

I am having the same issue. Deskthority is not sending emails. I wanted to make an account but not happening. Forum admins should take care of their websites, but it hardly happens.

:-X What do i say here. It's like i'm hungry now but the restaurant is closed. So, i check it after a year when i become a ghost.

Waiting for few weeks is fine, but a year is so long. Till then, who will solve my queries.

I understand your frustration. Waiting for a year is indeed a long time. Don't worry; while I may not be around, you can always seek help from friends, online communities, or other resources to solve your queries during that period.

Some people with google emails (gmails) have apparently had issues registering there. Mine worked but perhaps try a login with a different email service? Kinda dumb to have to do, I know.

I also use Outlook email, so maybe it really is a problem with the email supporter.

I think their email registration is broken, cause I sent the message again and nothing came up. I think that Desthority is slowly dying because it got bought out by people who had literally zero interest in maintaining the fourm, which is a shame.

I'll keep trying one day, especially because the username that's on all my platforms is the one I used. Maybe it will work.

Yup! I also tried this as well. First, I opened an account but I didn't get the verification mail but after trying with an new ID I got verification that time.

The site's new owner does not really care about it any more, it seems. There are some mods on the forum, but they don't have admin access AFAIK.

For a while now I have not been able to get into Deskthority. No matter what I try, it is "Forbidden"

Does anybody know how to solve it?

Thanks!

I registered just to post this, then realised that for some reason, Deskthority is no longer returning 403 Forbidden errors now.

Anyway, if it does it again, there are 2 possible workarounds :

a. Manually edit a link that shows you a 403 Forbidden error

If you look at the URL for one of these links, you'll see that it looks like this -

hxxp://deskthority.net/viewtopic.php?t=<some number>&sid=<some other number>

Delete the bit that starts with &sid all the way to the end of the line and hit enter. The page should now load.

b. Click on the Spy section on the top left of the screen, then go into the latest posts from there

For some reason, when you click on any links in the Spy section, they don't contain the &sid=<some number> indicated above, so the links load

As others have mentioned, Deskthority was taken over by someone fairly recently. It looks like they migrated the website and forum over to new servers. Since then, the wiki has been broken and the forum has had these issues. As for the exact cause behind the errors, your guess is as good as mine.

All we can do is to work around those issues. The steps I mentioned will get around those "forbidden" error issues and let you at least view/reply to posts in the forum. The "sid=" trick works around broken images in forum posts as well (assuming the pics are hosted on the site itself rather than on a 3rd party photo site with a dead link).
