Title: Unicomp keys for Model M
Post by: Atenacius on Thu, 28 July 2011, 18:54:55
CLOSED: Read update below.

I've decided to start a small group buy for ordering keys from Unicomp. I only wanted to order 1 red 'Esc' key from them but they have a minimum order of $10 USD and I was going to order 4 of them but then I saw that the shipping charges were $8.44. I didn't see a point in shelling out almost $20 to get one key. I'm sure there are others who may be in the same predicament so I thought this would be a good idea.

If anyone is interested in getting a few keys from this list provided by Unicomp, please let me know so that I can add it to the order.
This order is for a small number of keys only. This is my first group buy and I don't mind helping people out if they're looking for a few keys to replace. So if you're looking for a big set, might as well order from Unicomp directly.

Here's a pricing list provided by Unicomp (I only ask for an additional 50 cents per every 10 keys for shipping):

The keys come in these colors:

IMPORTANT: Please specify what you wanted printed exactly (Esc, ESC). Also, Unicomp only prints black lettering.

I don't really have a time frame for this, it really depends on the replies. Let me know if you're interested.

UPDATE
I have a response from a representative at Unicomp,

Quote
David, in order to give you the least expensive shipping option, I
need to know where we would be shipping to.  If you are within the
continental US, we could ship you 4 buttons for ~$1.50 USD.

Don

So it seems that you can just contact them directly and request a cheaper shipping option, making this group buy pointless.

1 Printed Red
1 Pritnted Orange

I read your post in the other thread but just to make sure, you want 1 red and 1 orange 'Esc' key, correct?

Yes, ESC keys.

This is a good point. Everyone should be very specific about what they want printed. So you want ESC, all caps. Also, they seem to only be able to print in black.

You can ask them to use USPS for small orders...should only be a few dollars. I don't see the point of a unicomp group buy unless you are outside the Us.

Welp, I can certainly try to request that, if that's the case, that'll be good news for everyone and I'll close this group buy.

What colors can we get for the WASD keys? I am thinking about making my ssk more colorful.

I've updated the post with the colors. mmmty posted the same picture in the second post.

Right now I'm uncertain if they would be able to make the entire key with the stem, or just the key cover. Rough start

I think that they only make the cover but they provide a stem piece with every cover piece. At least that was the way it was several months ago.

If this goes ahead, I would probably be interested in around 3 sets of WASD keys and 12 Esc keys. Not sure of the colors yet. If unicomp does not provide the keystems any more with the covers, I can probably give some out since I have a bunch of spares.

That's a bigger order than I had in mind. I originally wanted to keep everyone's orders small enough to ship in regular envelopes. I have larger envelopes but I might have to make it 50 cents per every 10 keys. It's still cheaper than $8.44, though

That's ok. If this falls thru, I'll probably just contact them directly. I use to email Chuck Cropper but he retired. Who is the point of contact nowadays (email)?

They still respond to support@pckeyboard.com. The person that answered my email was a Don Bowman. I'll probably expect an answer from him sometime tomorrow. At which point we will know for sure whether this group buy is a good idea.

I've been thinking about converting one of my Model Ms from white to black. Can I order a complete set of white lettering on black keys from Unicomp?

I've asked them about that before and they've stated that they do not have the technology to print anything other than black lettering on their keys. I originally wanted a red Esc key with white lettering and they couldn't do it.

Thats too bad, though maybe I'll order a set of blank black keys anyway. It's not like I really need the labels anyway.

I had contact with Jim Owens at jowens@pckeyboard.com who also seemed to be able to set us up (in case Don can't help ya).

Groupbuy-wise I would like

- red ESC key
- RGB blank

UPDATE
Good news in a way, you guys can request a cheaper shipping option from Unicomp:

So there's no need for a middle man/group buy
