Post by: magictoaster on Thu, 04 August 2011, 12:00:15
The 87U are now available at EK http://www.elitekeyboards.com/products.php?sub=topre_keyboards,rftenkeyless (http://www.elitekeyboards.com/products.php?sub=topre_keyboards,rftenkeyless). Well, some of them are at least! They also carry new key-caps: http://www.elitekeyboards.com/products.php?sub=access,toprekeys (http://www.elitekeyboards.com/products.php?sub=access,toprekeys)

But they are *limited*! Must be why the are more expensive! In all fairness, it's still cheaper to order them from EK than from Asia thru a broker. Plus they are *limited*! ;-)

I don't know WHY I bothered registering with the Elitekeyboards newsletter when clearly he's filtering out anyone that's a member of Geekhack.

And $345?  I had to get out my calculator but that's not quite the doubling in price that my NIB IBM Minis have appreciated since 2009.

But anyhoo, I was just saying the other day to the Aussie guy to wait.....

I wonder what the product label looks like. Maybe a little Elitekeyboards logo on it?

EK just sent a newsletter. He's just slow as usual! ;)

Mine is still cheaper @ $340 shipped from leopold.co.jp - just saying...

But now you can't get it from Leopold any more.

HHKBs now 300!! WUT??

The KBC Poker may not be perfect but goddamn; if you can get a Poker w/ PBT's for around $100 is the HHKB really worth $200 more?

I wanted to try a uniform topre but if it's going to be over three bills before shipping forget it.

I noticed that also on the HHKB also....

Just ordered an SE1700 black.  I think other versions will be available. Also check out the red, blue, white, and orange keycaps for realforce.  Cheaper than the last group buy.  But EK doesn't have my yellow keycaps.

I think that I will stick with David(IOmania) instead of buying from EK just because:

Anybody understand why The Keyboard Company can offer shipping worldwide for less than 30$ and EK still keeps offering the ultra expensive 50$ shipping?

David sent me 3 sets of keycaps for only 40$ from Korea. So what's wrong with EK offering that bad shipping service?

I feel like a fool since if I buy from EK I will have to pay for sure custom duties, I will have to pay very expensive shipping and to add the final piece of bread I don't have warranty from them. Perfect combo

This is only true for US buyers, if you look at the price for us Europeans for example it is more expensive at the end.

exactly...used 86U's are starting to look much better now. Not unless you gotta have the lighted capslock and numlock, integrated numberpad and extra windows key....

I would have liked to seen even a 45g option also to mix it up a bit and provide other options than just the variable...

The 87U is the keyboard I've always wanted, but EK ended up running out of stock.  I'm also the type of person that doesn't like to buy second hand...or order from websites that need to be translated.

Soooo...I ended up ordering a black 87U just now.

I missed the first time EK had them as I was still exploring the Filco Cherry Blue Tenkeyless.  Does anyone remember the 87U price when EK had them in stock last year?

EKs pricing scheme always seem off to me.

-Keyboard Company lists their tenkeyless Filco models cheaper than the fullsize, where EK listed the tenkeyless higher when he had them
-Keyboard Company lists their new Topre 88 key models cheaper than the 86U, where EK has a huge markup on their 87U vs

i get it, EK is free to price his products however he pleases, but it seems like either he's getting screwed on his supply side or his customers are

That was never the case, EK used to carry a Non-NKRO version of the full-size FILCO which was cheaper at cost than the Tenkeyless w/NKRO (Tenkeyless is not available without NKRO). Keyboardco does not carry the non-NKRO full size FILCO for comparison.

Keyboard Co lists their 86U at 170 GBP, which is about $276 at the moment. EK sells it for $265. The 88U Keyboardco sells is 160 GBP, or about $260; the 88U is a new board with new an unknown amount of capital invested in it by Topre, which dictates the final price. I don't have the prices on the 88U, but an educated guess would be that Keyboardco is getting it for less than EITHER of us gets the 86U.

I get it, wanabe is free to speak as he pleases, but it seems like he either doesn't do any research, or just doesn't know what he's talking about:)

Hi everyone, I have been a reader for almost two years and is my first post.
Just bought a 87U. Very happy with it and excited to see.

But wondering why people here are so sensitive about pricing? The JPY/USD
exchanging rate has changed about 20% for the past two years, USD=94Yen to
78Yen now. Then 275USD board to 345USD is also 20%... I thought EK has fair
pricing, that is why I bought.
Not sure how they carry products from asia, but if they use air, the cost of
fuel has also gone up too. Must wonder if they still make profit after paying
all costs to sell products.

There is a video around here comparing the two. The silent one.... really is a lot more silent. That's really all I can say after seeing the video. There is quite a difference. I prefer the extra noise myself. I can see a lot of people preferring the silent model especially in office environments. Maybe while answering the phone.

I lost a "paying" (redundant) customer because I corrected you and then, almost verbatim, reformatted your own speculation of me "screwing" my customers just to joke with you a little...and that crossed the line?

Grow a spine man.

Nothing worse about being incorrect than whining about it and throwing in the towel when someone calls you on it.

I'm not trying to troll or be contrary just for the hell of it. I work hard getting stuff from Japan into the states and I try to do so at world market prices or better. Heck, sometimes with the speed the exchange rates are changing I'm selling stuff just for the elite lulz and hardly making a dime, hence prices have to go up sometimes so I can stay in business.

BTW, for those who asked, more models of the 87U, i.e uniform weightings, are on the way this month.

I have no problem with the pricing and will probly be picking up a uniform weighted when they show up later this month (hopefully in white) but you do have a tendency of kind of talking down to people on these forums,  sometimes its just better to let people speculate and stay out of the conversation.

Trust me, I let A LOT of speculation go by!

Generally, when a sentence ends in a smiley face, I don't assume ill intent, if someone else does, then what can I say...I don't know how to communicate with them by text, so our "text" relationship is going to end there. This happens in life sometimes when two people don't "click," and often for good reason. I move on...

Whatever the case, when someone uses phrases like "screwing customers," expect me to take issue, and on occasion, actually speak up. I don't assume anyone else likes people speaking so cavalierly about their work and decision making skills; I think I deserve the same consideration.

anyhoo...

As for the 87U uniform and silent models inquiries above; there will be multiple uniform models down the line (how soon I can't say) and the silencing does not affect the downstroke, only the sound of the key as it springs back into place.

Oh, and the Leopold JP thing has been address elsewhere in the forum a couple times, basically distribution has changed and they aren't necessary. More Leopold keyboards to come:)

Thank you for finally bringing the WHITE 87U to US shores again!  Wish it was cheaper but as soon as the email came through this afternoon I popped one in the cart and checked out faster than you can say carpe diem.

Thanks EK.  I call dibs on the first all 45g white one you receive.

BTW, for those who asked, more models of the 87U, i.e uniform weightings, are on the way this month.

it has nothing to do with our exchange, you just read like a jerk from your forum posts here.  maybe you're just a bad communicator, but there's no reason why you cant run your business on these forums like bruce @ Keyboard company or that new WASD guy.  they actually try to keep dialogs open, where it seems like you only like to shut knubbes down to teach a lesson......................=)

I have to say that is very sad that Leopold.co.jp are not needed anymore. You may ask why is it sad? Because we could get all kind of Realforce 87U for ONLY 340 USD shipped while right now our unique chance is to buy them for 400 USD or more from a shop that doesn't seem to like european people to buy their keyboards.

You're selling to us europeans a Realforce 87U for 283 Euros while for less price some of us could get a more limited run of Realforce 91 UBY from The Keyboard Company with absoutely no chance of getting ****ed up by customs and with WARRANTY.

Just have to blame your shipping and warranty policy. You should learn on this point from The Keyboard Company.

I want like hell a Low Noise Realforce 87U but you don't put any facilities to buy from you. I fall in love with the Hangul edition, is a shame you don't sell it since maybe I would have to put my pants down and deal with that stupid warrant policy and shipping but well I will have to ask with IOmania.

Is not that we can't pay for 35€ of shipping that you make us feel stupid for sure :loco:

I assume the poor design is due to huffing dye fumes sampling prototypes from those $110 limited edition keysets.  Now THAT'S where the profit is.

What's so funny is my second post at Geekhack was questioning what idiot would pay $35 for a colored WASD/Esc Key set? (http://geekhack.org/showthread.php?5578-HH-realforce-esc-wasd-puller-on-UK&p=82011&viewfull=1#post82011)  Unfortunately Webwit's post is there no more.  It was a classic.

I have never experienced this problem with the variable. Though the pinky keys on my cherry blacks suddenly felt stiff.
It took me some time to get used to them after I sold my variable.

I'm still on the fence about getting an 87U but after thinking about it, the $80 difference between the 86U and 87U is more like $60 since you get the red esc key and the colored WASD keys with the 87U. I had to buy those for $20 for my 86U. The main reason why I want the 87U is for the uniform keys (when they plan to offer it) and the fact that I can replace all the keys with the colored Topre keycap sets. I don't really care for the imbedded numpad and I am neutral about the lighted caps lock.

87U was not available in any version in the US after the initial batch of 87U from EK.  Now EK is carrying the variable version again, people look for the versions that are not available.

I think Brian has already said that other versions will be available later.  Sit tight :-)

Nice. Can you compare it with a non-silent model?
Does it have less key travel before the actuation?

I think the foam ring on the plunger reduces the key travel before activation.
Can you confirm this?

As for the 87U uniform and silent models inquiries above; there will be multiple uniform models down the line (how soon I can't say) and the silencing does not affect the downstroke, only the sound of the key as it springs back into place.

It seems that information is incorrect, and the silencing does affect the downstroke by reducing the key travel before actuation by 0.2 mm.

A useful addition on this matter.

Quote from: skwan;396289
Just bought one from there, and shipped to me last week, still testing it out, but so far liking it, feels tamer than the pro 2, at first didn't notice the loss of travel, but now that i have typed on it a little, i can feel the difference, as for whether the type s really stands for speed or just advertising hocus pocus, i need some more time before i can safely comment on that.

I am just waiting until i can get someone to help me do a blindfold/ear muff test to see if i can feel the difference between with or without type S. I wish i can get a real force low noise in for the test as well, but i can't afford 3 topres...

Oh btw i noticed people were moaning about pinging, my type S has a slight ping on the space bar, i tried taking it apart and knocking on the various parts, and the high pitch ring seems to come from the key cap itself (try hitting the key cap with the case or other key caps the noise is surprisingly high pitch)... not a big issue, but being a type S, that is the most prominent noise the keyboard makes... My pro 2 has the same problem (a much worse case of it) some time after a few weeks use of it, it lost the nice thock on the space bar, and is now giving a very mechanical sound, and its weird because the noise is made when typed with my right thumb, but not with my left thumb, tried taking the thing apart and messed with it for ages to no avail..

brief note on impression so far (only 1.5 weeks of use), feels more linear with the loss of the little bit of travel at the top, especially noticeable when typing at high speed, unlike the brown (never tried any other MX cherries so cannot compare with blue etc) the faster you type the lower the tactile, i feet that the pro 2's tactile response doesn't go away with speed, if i may use a metaphor, it is kinda like slappaing water, the faster you hit it, the more forceful the response. So the type s loses alittle bit of that, i never even realised that until i tried the type s, and then tried to compare it back to the pro 2.  With all that said the difference is minimal, and it is much more accurate to say that it is just the pro 2 with less noise topping out, as expected, as advertised.

Another thing i noted, if you just run your fingers lightly over the keytops on the pro 2, it makes a noise (like all keyboards would), and i was thinking the type S wouldn't (or at least less), but it doesn't damp that noise, it makes the same noise, the only noise damped is when the key is coming up, not sure how this is relevant in day to day use, but it is something i noted.

I don't really care about the silent vs regular thing.  So far it's really fun to type on but I can't say how much I like it for at least a couple of weeks.  It takes me that long to get used to Topres and start utilizing the capacitive switches instead of bottoming out on boobs.  This time around might be faster to adjust because I have been using Cherry browns at work and capacitive bs at home.

I find myself squinting to find keys when doing keyboard shortcuts for coding with my 86UB.  And here I was thinking about getting an all blank board.  Now I'm wishing I got an 86U instead.  :)  But I'll live... I do like the look of the black better.

Seems like EliteKeyboards is not very responsive to customer queries. Sent them a question on future inventory and no replies at all.

At least they are always very responsive when you have an issue about an actual order. It's easy to understand why they would not be forthcoming about new products since it could potentially make their current stock harder to sell.

I probably asked them 3 or 4 times what specific model they would carry later this summer, and never got an answer either. At lest they did not tell me to bugger off...

Kinda busy and the space bar obviously doesn't fit, but helps me combat seasonal affective disorder.

Interestingly, the font size on the letter keys is a lot larger than on the default Topre keycaps and the replacement lavender WASD.

87UB came in the mail today. :)  Very pleased with the quality of the keyboard.  Also like the fact it "thocks" but isn't annoyingly loud like my cherry blues.  Surprisingly, Topres feel exactly how I expected them to feel.  I also like the variable weighting...It feels natural and I don't notice it unless I really look for it.  Wish I would have jumped on the wagon during the first round when these were available. Overall really happy with the purchase and glad I didn't compromise and get the 86UB.

Oh I do agree, it's just quite a departure from the understated look I've gotten used to. Really wish the yellow set were available.

Even though the space bar is shorter than the original, it still looks pretty good. I had figure that if I bought a set for my 86UB, I would not swap out the original space bar but now I think I may since it looks ok with the shorter space bar of the 87Us.

I tried it with the original black space bar, but visually it's even weirder, because it looks like somebody took a bite out of the nice rectangular mass of orange and red. Stabilizers line up fine with the shorter space bar, so I guess I'll just use a canned air duster to clean out the two new crevices.

I'm not disagreeing, just endlessly wrestling with my OCD nature.

Also, apparently I should have bought an extra key puller. Guess I got lucky I didn't break the stabilizers Ripster-style while pulling out the original long space bar. At least now I have much easier access to the sides of the short space bar without removing the Alt's.

What's the general consensus nowadays: reverse the space bar a-la Sensitive Thumbs RiGS or use the default orientation; remove the spring under it or keep it?

Talk about OCD... I had mine reversed for about a week.  I like it much better that way, but the look drove me bat****crazy.  I just deal with the sharp edge now. :)

Congrats on the keycaps.  The keyboard looks great!

But I'm having a serious "WTF!?!?" moment here.  Towards Topre, not you.

I've got an 87UB that is currently wearing yellow caps from the group buy.  And a set of red lettered caps just arrived today from EK.  Not sure what I'm going to do with them yet, but when I saw them awailable I had to have them LOL

When I bought these sets I just assumed that they would match perfectly to a 103.  I mean, all the keycaps for the tenkeypad are there.  And since the spacebar that came with the colored keycaps matches the 87U (not the 86U), I just made the additional assumption that the space bar on the 103 must be the same as on the 87.  I obviously never looked at the 103 that closely.

So what the hell is Topre thinking?  They have a set of keycaps that's mostly for the 103 except the spacebar isn't?  It's obviously not for a TKL since all the extra keycaps are there.  And it's also not quite for the 87U since it doesn't have the correct swapped Control/Capslock keys without/with windows.

So what Topre keyboard are these sets a perfect match for?  Or is there not one?

The idea of using the proper-sized black space bar, or the shorter colored spacebar would both trigger my OCD.  I'm not sure which one would trigger it more.  I guess I'll find out if/when I buy a 103.

My understanding was that these sets were for the 104s and 87s, but without the possibility of swapping Control / Capslock keys on the 87s. They do have two versions of Num lock / Caps lock / Control keys already, one for 104s, one for 87s, so I guess Topre decided to cut corners and not include the third version for the reversed 87s. Queue Ripster rant about lazy Topre engineers.

Avatar pic was taken with phone camera and crappy white balance. If you look at the pic I took with a decent camera and posted on the previous page, you'll see the yellow is actually carrot orange.

I finally put the yellow caps on the 87U.  These yellow caps are kind of funny.  They take on a lighter, cooler shade of yellow in daylight, but much darker, warmer shade of yellow with indoor light.  It could be my eyes though...  But I do like the Topre switches.  It is kind of like the "buckling rubber sleeve" in IBM M4 and that IBM laptop numpad, but less buckling. :-)

guilleguillaume, do I remember correctly that you have the JIS 91 version?  Do you also have yellow keycaps from the group buy here?  If so, do the two sets have the same shade of yellow when viewed side-by-side?  Thanks.

Received my 87U Silent in white today.  My first impressions are that I really like the more quiet keystrokes.  Although the space bar seems louder than the rest of the keys and definitely has the "thock" reminicent of my 86U not so silent board.  The feel of the keys does feel a little different than my 86U, not in a bad way but different.  My two reasons for purchasing this one and selling my 86U were the quieter sound and the embedded number pad.  Right now I can tell it is going to take me a little while to get used to the numberpad placement as I keep reaching for the regular numbers up high in the number row.  I'll follow up more after I've had it for more than an hour.  :thumb:

I don't have the Group Buy Yellow keycaps so I can't compare but indeed the Yellow keys from the JIS keyboard look different depending on the light source.

If this has been stated before, I apologize.  Anyone know the actual mechanism used in silencing the switches? I'm curious if the domes are the same between the silenced and non silenced versions, or if its the domes themselves that are made differently to silence them.  I'm considering getting an 87u white and swapping out the domes with the 55g set I have.
