Title: How to test KRO?
Post by: N8N on Fri, 05 August 2011, 16:10:27
This has never been a concern to me before, as I don't game...  but I have in front of me a shiny new WASD keyboard because it seemed to be potentially competitive with Filco (which is what I'd originally planned to buy) and with the 10% discount and custom keycaps it seemed to be worth a shot.  So I'm sure that someone is going to ask, "is it really 6KRO over USB and NKRO over PS/2?"  I can't answer the second question, not having a PS/2 port, but I'd be willing to test the first if someone could tell me how to do it in a rigorous manner.  I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 and also have a Windows Vista partition which is functional but I seldom use.

I did check all the keys through xev and they all check OK...  also just by opening up an openoffice document and trying to type and hold random keys down it *appears* to be 6KRO but I obviously was just noodling around and not testing "properly."

This (https://www.microsoft.com/appliedsciences/KeyboardGhostingDemo.mspx) works under Linux and only requires Javascript.

OK, for what it's worth, I tried the MS javascript thing and held down a couple different 5-key combos and was able to verify that every other key registered.

Haven't ripped the board apart yet to see if I can find any identifying marks on the controller that might be of interest to readers...

Did you clear it yet?

Also stuff like asx and things at angles like that are most likely to fail, so try sets of those at once to see if it's really 6kro.

come on, man, I just unpacked it less than two hours ago :)

actually I am still waiting for a new soldering iron to show up before I do that.  Also want to give myself a couple days with the blues to form an opinion on them first.  As I expected/feared, it appears to be impossible to pop the top on the switches with the plate mount, so changing to clears requires some level of commitment - I want to make sure that I really want to do it before I dive in.  I may change one of my POS boards to ergos first too just to make sure that I don't prefer those to straight clears, because I was assuming because I far preferred clears to browns, but I can't say with the same level of confidence that I prefer the clears to the blues.  If it weren't for the clickiness I'd take this into work Monday as is.  Well, actually, tomorrow (sigh)

Heh, I didn't even know you were getting one.

I think you still have that browns board which would let you try ergos.

I actually just ordered some more from rawko, so I'll be trying browns for a little bit (which I fully expect to despise as much as Solutor) and then turn it to ergos and dye/paint it. Even the bump with the clears is supposed to feel more pronounced once it's on the lighter springs.

Yes, I have a G80 POS board w/ browns, and a jar full of clear stems and springs that I took from a MX8100 (don't like the layout so I didn't feel bad shooting it in the head...) I may do that.

My whole idea was to buy one good keyboard and put clears in it, I was originally thinking Filco just because I haven't drank the TKL kool-aid yet.  But WASD showed up on the scene and since I already had some doubleshots and he was offering the 10% off deal, I figured I'd give it a try.  Worst case if I didn't like the etched keycaps I'd just doubleshot it and still have a nice keyboard.  Ordered blues just because I hadn't tried them yet (had neglected them because of the clickiness.)  So far I think that I like both the etched caps and the blues... so...  I dunno...
