Title: My keyboard pings. What should I do?
Post by: Finax on Sat, 06 August 2011, 18:29:35
I just bought the Majestouch-2 from keyboardco with cherry brown switches and after a few hours of use I can notice a distinct echo-y pingy sound when I hit a key. It's not noticeable with headphones+music playing, but frankly, for a £115 keyboard I'd expect to be able to use it regardless of whether I'm listening to music.

So what is my next step? Should I RMA and ask for the same keyboard again? I've been reading around and this seems like a common issue - I'm worried of being returned another keyboard with the same issue.

I've contacted keyboardco and they should respond tomorrow.

Does this problem come up with Majestouch-1s? I might exchange my Maj-2 for the earlier version.

I did look at a lot of reviews and forum discussions and the times when the 'ping' noise comes up were brushed off as a one off problem.

Why should I sell it? Then I'd be out of a keyboard and lose money. Seems better to RMA and hope to get one that doesn't ping.

If your board has just one or two pinging switches like mine

You can either rma it or fix the board yourself (it's just matter of desoldering the switch opening and reassembling it)

If the whole keyboard has an ecoing or ringing sound is better to sell it and get a decent board, because it's clearly the result of poor project choices.

Is that majestouch-1 or 2? My whole keyboard is echo-y and I'm planning to RMA it. Do you mean sell it and buy another keyboard? At this point I can get a refund, I'd hope. I've had it under a day.

It's a majestouch 2.

It has a single pinging switch and has also the echoing problem on the whole keyboard (knocking on the back of the keyboard is like knocking on the back of a guitar).

They are two different problems.

I had the former also on my Xarmor (and I' fixed it quickly) and ai saw it even on a brand new never used switch. I think that more or less one switch over 100 is affected.

Instead the latter problem is completely absent on both my xarmor and qpad and other boards I own and maybe is less pronounced on majestouch 1 because they lack the latest "improvements" (:pound:) like the different PCB.

Double layers is adopted for a new board. Through a hole of each switch has been firmly soldered.
With this, it can release any excess load or vibration that you make when you type in to a board not only to a metal plate inside. It enables you to enjoy a better typing feel!

I've bought four cherry boards, and two of them were Filco Linear R's. The first one didn't have a echo, but the stabilizers were extremely loose (which is probably normal on a lot of cherry boards). The second Filco had a echo. As Solutor said there are two different versions of a ping. It can happen on any board, not just a Filco. I had it on a Mionix as well. I would RMA it. Then just buy another one, and keep doing that until you get one that is good.

When you pay that much money as you said, you should get something that doesn't have that problem.

No need to lube, just desolder the switch, open and reassemble it, and then solder it again.

100% guaranteed it works.

To be clear I mean the Ping that affects some single switches, not the ring that affects the whole filco keyboards.

Wow, that's some intense pinging Solutor.  Low pinging doesn't bother me (like the slight ping in buckling spring keyboards) because you literally have to have your ear on the keyboard to hear it.  However that would have drove me insane.

Instead I was really satisfied.

I bought a filco mainly with the purpose to experiment in first person with its issues, i offered a free fix to anyone wanted to pay the shipment  with the same purpose (and no one answered).

So I can say I'm really satisfied: one shot, one hit

Here comes the disinfo campaign again.  Stop lying ripster.  He doesn't need to buy a Topre to get a quiet mechanical.  The vast majority of keyboards with plate mounted cherry switches don't ring at all.  He got a defective Filco.  That's not his fault, so lay off.

It does ping/ring when you knock on the back of the keyboard, like the Solutor suggested, but why the hell would you want to knock on the back of your keyboard anyway?

Bottom line, IF it is a switch issue, then it IS a QUALITY CONTROL issue for every vendor (and reseller) that let's one of these through.

Plenty of blame to go around.  If is it an easy fix, let's make sure the end users with the issues have the info they need.  If it is a larger issue with their 'board that they either can't or don't feel comfortable fixing themselves, then the reseller and/or vendor should make it right.

No need to bicker and split hairs...

Well Amazon will take returns for 30 days, The Keyboard Company will not RMA for Ping, and my assumption is Elitekeyboards has a 100% Ping Free guarantee from the way he talked about the issue previously.
Yeah.  Elitekeyboards has claimed that they single-handedly boosted the Filco quality rep in the US based on their thorough testing/screening of the 'boards before shipping.  That is what a reseller SHOULD do AFAIC.

Why do you keep saying 'not my fault' all the time?  It's not a normal thing, and this poll (http://geekhack.org/showthread.php?19743-Does-Your-Modern-Plate-Mount-Cherry-MX-Board-Ping-Ring-*Read-Instructions-First*) proves it.

Ping happens.

Over 80% of keyboards with plate mounted Cherry MX switches in the poll above have little or no audible ping.  So no, it usually doesn't "happen."  Stop spreading disinfo just because you are butthurt that Filco has some faulty boards.

I wish Filco customers demanded better key caps as often and as strongly as they demand ping-less boards.

Filco caps are bottom rung on a "premium" keyboard.  I propose we change directions here and focus on something filco/diatec can unquestionably fix for us.

The causes of ping need to be further investigated (preferably by vendors/manufacturers; but our hobbyists are resouceful and inquiring, and already seem to be presenting solutions)

Caps not ping!
