Title: Reduced wobble on Kinesis Advantage with Cherry G81 keys
Post by: Findecanor on Tue, 09 August 2011, 05:38:51
One thing that irks me about my Kinesis Advantage is that the 2 unit long keys (Space, Enter, Backspace and Delete) don't have any stabilizers. Unlike the keys in the curved key wells, these keys are mounted on a rigid PCB -- with no plate.
This makes them a little wobbly if you press them off-center. The Cherry MX switches wobble more the deeper they are pressed. OK, OK.. not everyone bottoms out on these keys, but if you have these keys remapped to modifiers, then you may do it more often.

A while ago, I got a set of Cherry G81-3000 keys in the mail. The keys will fit Cherry MX switches but the stabilized keys are different than MX-based boards. Each stabilizer bar is supposed to be attached to a Cherry MY switch and key cap directly, and the key cap has a leg in each corner that touches the plate when you bottom out.
The non-stabilized keys, I could put on my Cherry MX-based boards, but I had no use for the keys that are different ... until now.

I discovered that if you put a stabilized G81 key on a PCB-mounted Cherry MX key, then the legs will touch the PCB when you bottom out!

So, I put the Keypad-Enter and Keypad-0 on my Kinesis as Space and Enter. Much less wobble!
Now, I will have to acquire identical keys for the other side of the keyboard...
