Title: May be stupid question but why Red Escape Key?
Post by: nhwhaup on Fri, 12 August 2011, 14:28:25
I'm not a gamer or a programmer but joined this forum a few months ago to get some tips on finding a good feeling/sounding keyboard.  And then the ongoing purchases started......... So my question to the group is - what is the relevance of the "red" escape key?  Is it a gamer or a programmer thing?

Kind of like fire alarms, escape hatches, etc... all red.  Esc key should be red too then. :)

Otherwise, no particular reason.

Thanks guys!

Now what about the WASD keys?

It's just adding some bling to the keyboard; makes for a nice contrast. Kinda like cuff links. lol

Well, you could say the WASD have relevance, since most FPS games bind to WASD for movement.
A gamer in the dark may be able to spot his WSAD from the colour contrasting with all the other black.
There may be a practical purpose to the WSAD keys being a different colour, but the red Esc.... I don't think so.
However, I love the look of a red Esc, not of coloured WSAD keys. :P

Yes, I usually say WSAD, seems more logical. Forward back left right.

Ripster,  you fill a very specific role and changing would leave a void that no one else here can fill. Except maybe the Stallion with his Italian sausauge.

For me it's a combination of the "big red button" and the simple fact that it adds a splash of color to my keyboard. Just something to stand out, add a bit of snap to it.

Big red button....
Red Spacebar anybody? :D

But it's supposed to do potentially bad things! And space bar is used too commonly to meet the criteria.

ESDF ftw!

WASD ftl!

My reasons I feel ESDF is superior:  F has the tactile dot, which can always be under your pointer; ESDF does not require "shifting" your homerow positions; ESDF leaves the same amount of accessibility to Shift, Caps, Tab, and Ctrl/Alt keys, but also allows another set of binds to Q, A, and Z, also accessible now without moving your position.

More binds, more natural position, and quicker no-look acquisition... it's a win-win.

I want an ESC key that says "Easy", just like Staple's red Easy button.

Ok I need this keyboard.  The one thing it is missing is a scroll wheel, maybe stick it in the middle below the two buttons.

Take notice that it is highly textured from the close up shot.  The feel is good.  Pleasure is ensured.

Thanks ripster!  I bought this LED flash/light thing for $26 from Hong Kong on eBay.  It is cheap and cheaply made.  But it does a good job.  Finally I can make good use of my 100mm macro lens and all 21 megapixels on my camera.

What flash is that? I'm still looking for a cheap macro flash for my camera.

btw, I think that a red escape button is just a cool way to personalize your keyboard. And of course the big red button (these things are known as GRK in germany, Großer Roter Knopf) which just looks evil.

Honestly Ripster, did you just take this picture or do you have a giant archive full of pictures fitting for every occasion? And what is it with you and the Lego?
And this LED Ring really looks cheap. I guess I could solder something like this together in some minutes.

Well, I do like Lego. Have you ever been in Legoland in Billund, Denmark? That's cool! And you get cheap Lego, as it's produced there!

Lol! That really looks bad.
But I really like Lego, it's like playing miniature Minecraft in Real-life. Hmm, maybe I should make a Lego mod for Minecraft...

Red Pause/Break key. That one does more important things.
or Ctrl-C. I use that one often enough. Once ran a " chmod 755 /* " instead of " chmod 755 * " You can imagine how many times I hit Ctrl-C after I realized my mistake. :D

That's interesting, I have to look for this texturepack!

And chmod 755 /* is nice! But rm -rf /usr is much better! Have a look at this Bugreport:
https://github.com/MrMEEE/bumblebee/commit/a047be

But what are you using the Break key for?

Search for "FC100 LED flash" on ebay.  There a number of sellers and different versions for Nikon and Canon.  I bought from this seller:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=120723621217

So far I have only used it in light mode (not flash mode) since it is easier to set f-stop and shutter and its flash is not TTL (not for $26.95).  The manual is next to useless due to funny Engrish.  But it is simple enough anyone can figure it out how to use it.

Yup that looks cool! Going to buy a nikon one soon. Free shipping from Hongkong and around 25$? Nice! Thanks for the hint!

No problem!  Just keep the pictures coming and share them here.

It was $26.95 for the Canon version with free shipping drop-shipped from Hong Kong to New Jersey and then took its sweet time to get to the west coast to me.  It took almost 2 weeks to receive.

I guess I will use my camera to document the arrival of my first mechanical board(s)! I'm not sure which is to arrive earlier. The Unicomp I ordered yesterday, or the two Cherrys I'll buy from Ascaii on September 1st. The Unicomp will be international, the Cherrys a national delivery. But I guess I will only get my hands on the Unicomp on the 13th, as that's my 17th birthday and it's my present! But you will get Pictures, I promise. But maybe at first without the Macro Ring.

Btw, do you think it'd be possible to use the Nikon Flash on a Panasonic in light mode too? Because my main Camera is a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ100, and I only use the Nikon of my Mother. (The joke is, I use her camera more often than she does. That's a good thing, I convince her of buying something, and use it myself. A big advantage of being 16 and the technician in the family)

holy crap! been trying to convince people of this for years... never understood why wasd was so popular except maybe that it sounds cooler than esdf....  Been using ESDF since the original Quake and never looked back.  The few times i played at other people's computer's i tried it out, but quickly reinforced my idea that WASD is inferior in every way!  I think you're the first person i've seen on a public forum embracing ESDF

No, there have been others who say that. But I never got the claim that it's difficult to find the wasd keys. I get there's a few more buttons/keys available, but that's what gaming mice are for.
