Title: Small/portable mech board
Post by: RC-1140 on Sat, 13 August 2011, 15:55:03
Hello guys,

Normally I like big keyboards, well you know, aircraft carrier style, which is why I have bought a Unicomp 122-Key Terminal Emulator today as my first mechanical keyboard.
I'm typing a lot when I'm somewhere else, either on my own notebook, or on various PCs at my school. This is why I would love to have a small portable mechanical keyboard, preferably with Cherry Blue or Browns, maybe Blacks (I never tried them), definitely tenkeyless and USB would come handy. NKRO is not important to me for this. I would love a HHKB, but these are a little expensive to me. I live in Germany, so in most cases shipping costs much too.

Do you have any recommendations for me? I'm getting annoyed from typing on 5 years old, sturdy (on some of them I would estimate an actuation force of around 100g!) and filthy rubberdomes.

greetings,

RC

Try "G84-4100" in Amazon.de.

With some persistence you could find cheaper sources. And for pocket money you could try getting used one and check whether it suits you.

EDIT: Not Cherry MX, but ML.

If you like the HHKB but don't want to spend so much,  the Poker would be an option.

I don't have one but I didn't see a negative thing about it.

You could ask qtan for one with your preferred switches.  He ships for very reasonable prices.

I might have something for you, and im in Germany as well. I have a compact g80-1800 with mx blacks, the board is black with think lasered cherry keys, german layout. USB cable. There is a "schönheitsfehler", namely a hole where a small card sensor was installed, I can send you a pic immediately if you are interested. Price for the board would be 30€+shipping.

I use a twin to this board as my carry around board, though I admit I modded the switches on mine to ergo clears recently, since I prefer the tactile bump.

Also, if you are looking for some other inexpensive Cherry boards, I have access to plenty of used g80 boards, and have a lot of stuff to sell.

Sweet jesus, the Cherry one (G84-4100) looks nice and cheap, but somehow I'm skeptic about the MLs. What is their feeling compared to the various MX? I only read that they'd be lighter than the ordinary ones, and have a smaller travel distance.

The g80-1800 seems to be a little to big for me. But it's nice to hear from somebody from Germany.

And the poker looks really cool, but I'm not sure, where I could get it in Europe.

Personally I dont enjoy the g84-4100 switches...i have a board lying here you can have for cheap...I find the ML switches stick when hit off center and im not an exact typist.
The poker might be avaiable via Deskthority.net, our fearless leader sixty had said he might do a second round of the group buy that is just finishing up, ordering a large number of pokers directly from kbc.
He is pretty busy at the moment, so I wouldnt exactly spam him, but you could read up on the group buy at deskthority.net. imav has/had a group buy running for the north american side, sixty for europe.

I just sent you a pm. Additionally to what I said in there, what would you want for the g84?

KBC Poker gets my vote. Also Access-IS boards if you can get your hands on one.

I'd say go for the KBC Poker, decent reviews, any switch type you want, and very compact. :)

PM to qtan5370 or contact him in his subforum here: http://geekhack.org/forumdisplay.php?81-Elite-e-sports-gaming-equipment

i think the costs are about 90 dollar for the keyboard and around 20 dollar for shipping.

I ordered yesterday a KBC Poker Cherry Red with PBT keycaps from qtan5370 including shipping to Germany i payed 93euro. Without the Red's or PBT's it would be cheaper.

I would say either get the KBC Poker or Noppoo Choc mini. If you can't find someone selling them on this site, you can look on ebay which has both boards for sale.

Well, I'm back now, and I have made a decision. I want to thank you for all these recommendations. Even though I'd love the Poker, it'd be too expensive for me. I've decided to buy the Cherry G84-4100 AND the G80-1800 from Ascaii. The KBC Poker looks nice and everything, but I'd pay the double price for only one keyboard, and as my only income is pocket money I just can't afford it atm. I don't think the MLs are as bad, as I'm used to use old, worn out rubberdomes, even though the sticking keys issue. (But when I have the money I guess I will still buy a Poker, only to have a board with browns, I got the feeling that I'm getting addicted with keyboards I guess )

Thanks guys!
