Title: Love the new 87U Silent RealForce but...
Post by: nhwhaup on Tue, 16 August 2011, 18:21:18
I was just so excited to receive this new keyboard and my initial impressions were great. I love the overall quality build and the feel and sound of the keys. The keys really are quiet and feel pretty light which is great for me personally. Now comes the bad part - as much as I like everything about this keyboard, it doesn't really like me. I received it on Friday and spent quite a bit of time typing away on it all weekend. By Sunday my right thumb (which I use for the space bar) was sore and bothersome. So I figured it was just plain overuse from the extra typing over the weekend. I took it to work with me on Monday and the thumb continued to bother me. Around noon I switched back to my Filco with reds and low and behold the thumb pain calmed right down. I thought maybe I was holding it funny using the RealForce but couldn't really see that I was doing anything different with my thumb than I normally do. Today I only used the Filco at work and the thumb is painless.

So I'm not sure what about the RealForce is causing the thumb pain but I will try to break it in with graduated usage (like work hardening). I really hope that I'll be able to use it as I really like everything about it. All in all, I again think the reds are the best switch for me - still my number 1 favorite.

Reverse the spacebar if you use your left thumb. Which thumb do you use?

Could be the angle of the space bar, or the way your thumb hits it naturally, or both. I wonder if flipping it might help.

Reverse the spacebar.

I know the RealForce space bar tends to have a sharp edge but the thumb pain is more like joint pain in the knuckle closest to the nail. I will reverse the space bar and see if that makes a difference. Thanks for the tip.

The problem is with my right thumb which is the one I use on the spacebar.

I only find reversing the spacebar useful if you are a left thumber.

Alternatively make sure your elbows form a 90 degree angle while typing, and try to fold out the keyboard feet.
Also do not rest your palm on the desk while typing.
