Title: HP Touchpad (from closeout)
Post by: heedpantsnow on Sat, 20 August 2011, 19:05:49
Hi, I'd like to buy an HP Touchpad (they were on sale this weekend), either 16 or 32 GB.  Must be LN or LNIB.

I can pay a fair price via Paypal or work out a trade; I have the following:
KBC Poker (Cherry Reds)
KBC Poker (Cherry Browns)
Data 911 (Cherry Blacks?)
Filco FKB104M (Cherry Browns)

Thanks

check your local best buy tomorrow...they open at 10am. they are now selling the rest of their stock in store at the $100/$150 prices. I will be there tomorrow morning :)

also, HP has said there is more stock coming to their website later this week.

Thanks, I'll keep an eye on the HP website. My local best buy sent their entire stock back. :-(

At this point, with reports of best buy employees hoarding remianing stock for themselves, I'm more hopeful about getting from from refreshed HP stock or maybe something like woot.  Found out about this deal late and wasted hours fruitlessly trying to snag one.  Sigh.

Update, maybe not fruitless, got a confirmation email from HP direct on an order I attempted to place with them.  But I got that from Microcenter and was quickly retracted.  I'll probably have to wait on this one since it's likely HP won't have staff around to either ship or cancel it till tomorrow morning.

I might've picked up a couple at ecost.  Will have to see if they actually ship I guess.

Thank all of you for your advice!

That's the one I got.  I posted about it over in the "So, who bought the HP Touchpad tonight?" (http://geekhack.org/showthread.php?21196-So-who-bought-the-HP-Touchpad-tonight) thread earlier so hopefully everyone got one who wanted one.  And if not I have little doubt there will be more opportunities over the coming week both from HP itself and other vendors since there are still a lot of these touchpads in the supply channels.  I personally wouldn't try to buy extras to flip for profit but a good time to get a toy if you want one.

Anymore of these out there? I'd really like to get my hands on either the 16 or 32gb model.  All bestbuy and futureshops are sold out in my area, and neither let you order online.  Anybody have any ideas?

CDW was still processing orders but there are rumors that they've been out of stock for a while.

Why do you think your order will be cancelled?  I have -one- with them which currently shows a delivery estimate of August 25, 2011 - August 30, 2011.  If they do get cancelled, gird your loins, HP is supposed to be dumping a new load of them soon, probably tomorrow (if not sooner).

there's a few people talking about their orders being cancelled. I think I might be OK though since my card has a pending charge from amazon. a few people said they don't even have pending charges.

i just logged into the HP site and i still had 4 16gb in my cart. it let me order them...hopefully if the onsale ones don't come through, HP will leave me on the backorder list or something.

I am, and i'd 99% sure it will for sure happen, but it's more a matter of time. It might be a long ways out until we have a stable build. I'm happy with using WebOS until then. It's really a solid OS and it's sad 3.0 is off to this kind of start. I have pretty basic needs though. I'll use it 90% of the time to browse the internet though. I might take it with me to Italy next month and use it to watch movies on the flight.

You bet.  It will still be useful without it but much better with! Pretty much what BiNiaRiS said, well except I'm not going to Italy dammit.

I'm watching for these, too.  I'm hoping to put Ubuntu on it, instead of Android.  I use both, so either will be fine, but I'd rather have Ubuntu... 11.04 always seemed more of a tablet OS.  I hate Unity on the desktop, which is why I use LXDE, but it would make sense on a tablet.

Looks like everyone is pretty much out now.  Maybe the last place on planet earth expecting new stock is the  HP Home and Office store (http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopping/can.do?landing=rts_tablet&category=rts_tablet&catLevel=1&storeName=storefronts) which is allegedly getting both some merchant returns and the contents of six 40ft containers containing Touchpads literally just in from China, so that's a place to watch.

YW. Bummer about not shipping to you.  Maybe another ebay deal like Datavis will pop up with only a slight markup.  There is also suspicion that Amazon has some squirrelled away that might show up on woot which they own (right now woot has a 12 pack of Gourmet Cedar Grilling Planks so don't get excited just yet).

You Euros also get a sweet deal on the Pre 3, make sure to pick one up!

Also, the most recent retailer to go live on SD is Canadian, so you might be in luck!

Get this:
So I went to BB yesterday morning; I heard they were going to get some in. Manager says that their truck arrives late afternoon, they unload in evening, come back tomorrow morning.

So this morning I show up and there's a big crowd. Some folks walk right in, some don't. What's the deal? BB decided to hand out vouchers at 3-freaking-AM and if you don't have a voucher then you don't get a shot at one until 11 am. How would someone know about the voucher thing? Manager: "I guess either they saw it driving by or heard from an employee."

I disliked that place before and now I despise it.

I ordered one online from Best Buy for 50% off plus 20% off when buying 4 qualifying items.  I'm not sure it's going to ship but hope so.  If it doesn't ship I can probably live without it, I'm actually a little concerned about the long term impact on the battery if it's being charged much of the time sitting in the touchstone - I've read this is really not good for the long term life of batteries.

I got a wireless keyboard in the same purchase which I was already able to pick up.  I was sceptical about the keyboard but actually like it fairly well.  The problem I have now is that it begs for a mouse or other pointing device but nothing like that is seemingly supported as of now.  I'll just have to get used to touching the screen although this is far from ergonomic when propped up in "monitor" position.  I saw some from various vendors on Amazon but in the $60-$70 range, not full price but not as cheap as they were.  If you watch HP's Home & Office store some more might show up, probably for a better price.

There's still like 40 of these nearby me at Best Buy. Not sure if it would be worth the shipping cost for me to send you one though.

I'm actually a little concerned about the long term impact on the battery if it's being charged much of the time sitting in the touchstone - I've read this is really not good for long term battery life.

Really?  Wow, I didn't know about this.  Hmm..  I guess only time will tell.  It sure makes it convenient to charge though since I don't like fiddling with that charging cable trying to plug it to the bottom of the TouchPad.

And for only $39, I picked it up right away before someone else snatch it up. lol

This darn thing is so glossy.  You'll have to excuse the dust in this pic. =D

I ordered one online from Best Buy for 50% off plus 20% off when buying 4 qualifying items. I'm not sure it's going to ship but hope so. If it doesn't ship I can probably live without it, I'm actually a little concerned about the long term impact on the battery if it's being charged much of the time sitting in the touchstone - I've read this is really not good for long term battery life.

The urban legends about rechargeable battery life are countless...

So maybe it is just an urban legend but is consistent with what I've seen with cell phone and laptop batteries.  Are you saying this is not valid?  I'm really not sure to be honest.

Here the cellphones are mainstream since the end of 90's and in those years I read anything and the opposite of anything.

Every phone shop still suggest to charge the phone for 12/14h the first time, even if this is pointless since the introduction of the NI-Mh batteries, and anyone still suggest a different technique to improve the battery life.

The truth is that all depends on the battery quality, and on the logic of the charging circuitry.

Back to the the question, if can be a good idea to remove the battery on a notebook used as desktop replacement, on a tablet used mainly in mobility, due only valid sentence is charge it when needed, charge it whenever you want and pray that Palm engineers did a good work.

^its the best accessory you can buy for it.

I thought i wouldnt want one either when I first got my iPad but with a anti-glare screen protector on it, the difference becomes night and day in terms of not just viewing but it also feels so much smoother when touching the screen, of course not having to wipe off fingerprint every other minute is also a plus

Oh yeah, I hate wiping it down daily.  This thing is a fingerprints magnet. lol  Ok, I'll take a look at some screen protector for it.

You're welcome and hurry.  They might be sold out already since a lot of people are looking to buy any accessories they can find at discounted prices.  Good luck! =)

Has to be an anti glare one though, because any other one will still attract fingerprints

Have you tried Office Depot (http://www.officedepot.com/a/products/277989/HP-Touchstone-Charging-Dock-For-HP/) either online or in store?  They're supposed to have some.

Thanks, man, but they're all out around here.

I'm still hoping that my HP SMB order will ship!!!

My first Geekhack message typed on my touchpad using the Bluetooth keyboard.  This keyboard isn't bad.  Not great, but for the teeny thing it is, it beats the onscreen keyboard which I struggle with.  Supposedly HP had more touchpads coming in that were going to be available through the online home & office store which hasn't happened.  What has happened is continued reports of SMB back orders being fulfilled so my inference from that is additional units were delivered but first priority was given to fulfilling the SMB back orders.  That's my long winded way of saying I think heedpantsnow your chances may be good of getting that order eventually.

FYI, the bluetooth keyboard is one accessory that's still in stock at least at many online places and decent prices.  Not as good as a cherry mechanical but better than a pane of glass.  If you google "hp touchpad bluetooth keyboard review" you'll find very postive reviews for it.  And in case you're wondering, I went back and finished this post on my laptop but the first paragraph was done on the touchpad.

No luck :*(  They didn't have any Touchstones. I think they just want people to think they have it to get people in the store. And you can't check to see which store has it like Bestbuy. But all was not lost. I got some delicious Chick-fil-A next door to Office Depot.

GOSH I love that restaurant.  I'm convinced that some of the nicest, hard working people in the whole world work at that place.  It's probably the #1 thing I miss being overseas.

Curiously my HP SMB order status says this:

Customer #xxxxx                                Estimated Ship Date:    08/28/2011

Customer PO #:    444xxxx                Estimated Delivery Date:    08/28/2011

Associated Order #:    000000000        Credit Approval Date:   08/25/2011

...
Configuration:    No   Ship Via:    ECON VALUE FRT
    Express Config:   No     Carrier Info:
             Ship Complete :    No

Sale Amount:    $198.00
Tax Amount:    $17.82
Total Amount:    $254.26

So the ship date and delivery date are the same?  Weird, huh?

I think I did; TBH I was clicking links like crazy.  A really fast-moving scammer could have made a ton of card numbers by posting fake links over the last few days!!

I doubt it will go through. I put and order in on Monday since my cart still had 4 in it and it was cancelled. HP said any order after 4am CST on Monday would be cancelled.

I have a 16gb touchpad I have had for a week now Its cool but I find myself always picking up my mbp instead. I have a hhkb lite 2 and would really like to upgrade to a hhkb pro 2 and be willing to trade it and some cash for the keyboard. I have the box and everything that came with it and a Incase neoprene case for it that will come with it. pm me with any offer.

I also have a IBM model M (blue Logo) that needs some help that I wouldnt mind throwing into the deal. I ran aquakey test and when you hit shift it presses shift & z.

sold the touchpad thx guys.
