Title: keyboard choice, and colored keycaps.
Post by: instaq on Sun, 21 August 2011, 17:14:37
I'm new to these board and also these keyboards, but really like to get one that works. Currently seen a few keyboards here and there and I'm currently looking for black switch keyboards that can also have there keycaps swapped for colors not just the WASD keycaps.

which keyboards would you recommend and which keycaps?

hope you guys can help me out on this one.

you can change all keycaps on all cherry mx boards
maybe you take a look at the marketplace section (http://geekhack.org/forumdisplay.php?49-geekhack-marketplace) here

what is the price-range you are looking for?

don't really have a price rance since my gamer keybaord vary from 100 eur to more, my guess is i'll be spending a bit more but that shouldn't matter that much as long as the quality is good enough.

Welcome to geekhack!

the mighty wiki (http://geekhack.org/showwiki.php?title=START+HERE+--+The+Geekhack+Mechanical+Keyboard+Guide+-+Includes+Glossary+and+Links) says:

In my humble opinion, blacks and browns are fine and it depends on you which one you like best
DAS Keyboard or Filco would be my choice. Used if I could find one.
DAS is only available in full size. Filco also tenkeyless.

If it's a standard 104-key ANSI layout or similar tenkeyless, have a look at WASD keyboards.  In fact I have one of their boards and the complete boards are worth a look as well.  Only downsides:  etched keycaps aren't ideal if you aren't a touch typist; I don't like the case design quite as much aesthetically as I do Filco; they don't offer MX clear switches (nobody else does either though); they don't put a heavier spring in the space bar switch like Cherry Corp. does (neither does Filco or Noppoo though - not sure if DAS or Leopold does.)  WASD is a good company to deal with as well, with great service, and they're based in the USA.  They use steel plate mounted Cherry MX switches which is pretty much what all the "high end" keyboard mfgrs. are doing these days.

There's no telling for when round 4s will come, but if you're interested in PBT keycaps, check out Imsto's group buy here: http://geekhack.org/showthread.php?21177-new-group-for-KBC-keycaps-including-104

looking for keycaps like this:

or

I really would to have my arrow keycaps colored like those 2 and my other keys like WASD.
Where can you get a set that has all the caps for the whole keyboard, or is it adviced to buy them per key?

the first ones seem like doubleshots. nice
second one could be pbt engraved ones like imsto offers

but as i am kinda noob i may be wrong ;)

in my humble opinion i would go for doubleshots if you have the time and the money.  seems like the doubleshot groupbuy will take some months

The first one is actually the Limited edition Yellow Topre keycaps and will only on Topre RealForce keyboards.

The second one looks like a 37 KBC PBT set and is not a complete set.

You can also reach out to WASDkeyboards if you want a full set of yellows. They are vendor on this forum.
