Hi there,
this is a really cool forum. Maybe here I can get a answer to this new version of the HHKB from PFU: Link (http://www.pfu.fujitsu.com/hhkeyboard/type-s/) . It's looking there are used a new kind of mechanic for the keys. I used the Google translation but I can't imagine for what this new kind of key mechanic is useful except the sound per click is more silent. Does somebody have some experiences already with this Type-S stuff?
best regards,
wittmann

I think they use the same switches like in the topre silent for the silent model.
-
Yikes! Thanks to my bonus the order is went out. Unfortunately there is no black Type-S. Now the waiting begins. Nothing else is better as the antici......pation ;)

Comrade!

@wittmann
Congratulations on the new board.
Please let us know how you like it (or not) when it shows up and you've put it through its paces.

Where did you order it?

Yes, I will do this definitely.
Where did you order it?
By elitekeyboards. From this shop I got my 2nd HHKB Pro2, which you can see at my avatar. The S-Type is my third HHKB Pro2. My first HHKB Pro2 (PD-KB400W) is at my work desk in the office.

it's exactly the same board with silencers, so minus the pleasure of this light sound. A bit of a scam this price in a way...

It's like the new Malibu Stacy. She's like the old Malibu Stacy but with a new hat! :)

But she's got a new hat!

My interest is less in terms of getting value for money (we are talking Topre here so that's kinda off the table already) but just confirming that the silencing does not make something worse (in at least some people's opinion).
Pay more and getting a worse outcome would e bad deal.
-
I love mine if that helps.
-
So the feel etc is at least as good?
The only effect of the silencing is on the noise level?
There is no change to key feel or there is a change that makes something other than sound levels better or ?
Tell me there is a good reason not to buy one of these to save my wallet

I mentioned before that I like the shorter key travel. 0.2mm might not be a lot, but it's noticeable to me. This feels slightly better to me. I guess the only good reason not to buy this is that you need to buy 2 or 3 other keyboards.

It's this eye for detail that makes me the Number One Keyboard Expert On The Planet.
Agreed.

Interesting. Thanks.

Or maybe even buy something that is not a keyboard (perish the thought )
-
unfortunately it doesn't exist in black so not interesting to me ^^
regarding th build quality of the sliders it might depends a lot on the model and the date of building...
-
it does exist in black, i am holding one, just buy a black hhkb and a type s and switch the case and keys... a screw driver is all you need...
like hcry4 said the loss in travel is noticeable, and it is driving me nuts, because now i have to choose between the normal hhkb (which to me feels better) and the type s which makes less noise (normal hhkb space bar is very loud imo, louder than cherry brown space bar)
-

Well that and heaps of spare cash lying around looking for something to be spent on :-)
-
re: duncan
in that case, i would have gotten the HHKB hg, IMO metal>black
-
@skwan
Good point!
-
no sorry, modifying a black to get something with less feeling is not really exciting me ^^
I dont want to buy a Silent Model for that :)
Not really willing to throw money by the window :)

You may be in the wrong website if you were hoping to keep your money in your wallet

we are speaking about $500 for nothing. It's not about keeping my money in my wallet but not flushing it. I already got a HHKB pro 2, (which is in my opinion far better than the type S). 7 keyboards and many customised keys in a few month is not really keeping money :)

RE popol
I agree with you, for most people type S is stupid.. but i need to take notes in environments that require as little noise as possible for work.. hence type S for me (even that is too loud imo, but the alternatives are rubber domes that doesn't bare thinking)
But i am curious why you say pro 2 is "far better" than type s... even though the loss of travel is noticeable, it is minimal, unless of course the betterment is coming purely from the difference in price tag... as a product, type S is slightly "better", as ripster pointed out, keys slightly less wobbly (at first i thought it is just because since there is less travel, less room to wobble, but it could be due to the construction of the new slider as well) and topping out noise doesn't really assist with typing... but for me... those are more then off set by the loss in travel.. but the difference is very tiny (which is why it is driving me nuts)
Do any one know how many HHKB HG is being circulated (and if it is possible to get one)? i am kinda tempted to save up for one... and if i can get a metal space bar to go with that... dang...

I was just speanking about the typing sensation to my own taste. The sound is not so loud though ^^
-
So the spanking sensation is better on the regular Pro2 ? I wont even think about getting the Type-s then...
If you want very silent typing go for this : http://www.ubergizmo.com/2011/04/minebea-cool-leaf-keyboard-tested/
You can program a activation sound... who knows. But we all know this will be bad for your fingers in the long run :(

Well if the people around you can't bear noise (I know that pain) then you'll almost certainly find a decent scissor switch to be quieter then most RDs.
I am not suggesting that's a better answer than a 'good' board but I find decent SS boards better than most RDs so if you are pushed hard in that direction then do give a SS board a thought (they are halfway decent ones out there for <$20) as a fill in until you can get exactly the right board.

@popol
Sorry that my gentle joking seems to be making you feel bad (judging by your responses).
I didn't intend anything by my comments that would justify your responses but obviously they read differently to how they were intended.
Again sorry if it seemed I was attacking you in any way.

No problem, it's just my bad written english that might sound harsh sometimes. I'm sorry for that!

It hurts so good...

If HHKB Pro is converted using silicon rubber, it will be made to a quiet sound like Type-S.

So, today I've received the HHKB Pro 2 Type-S. I can't say that the feeling of the typing is much different. I would say it's the combination of the silence modification that makes the summary of the experience a little different to the normal HHKB Pro 2. I've made some quick pictures and two videos with my cam. Unfortunately the microfone of the cam is not the best but I believe the difference is audible (hopefully). In real environment you recognize a difference. In summary this really tiny innovations are not enough for the big extra price!
ripster gives us already a good picture from the key mechanic. Here are my quick shots:

Hi, someone asked for compare of typing. The black one is the ordinary HHKB Pro2 and the white one is the HHKB Pro2 Type-S

The controller in my regular pro2 is identical to the one in your type-s.
-
Yea, should definitely be priced closer to the Realforce 87U.
-

might be. Date of production of the Pro2 is 2009-01. The date of Type-S is 2011-06. I would say PFU is using almost the same material for both types of HHKB Pro2 except the silicon ring and this type of difference is a little bit .... I don't know.
Anyway, I has need a last HHKB at home and this was the chance to test the Type-S.
-
Back to waiting for the HHKB3.
It will be $1000 ripster...!!
Thanks to all for the great info on this post.
For the silicon rubber mod above, what is the liquid bottle the guy is using @ 0:42 ??
Thanks,
kv

It helps to be like me and get along well with the Japanese. Don't be racist like RiGS.
Haha, you got that stuff thanks to our joined efforts with hasu. I even offered you a chance to participate.
