Title: Any update on the new Rosewill keyboards ?
Post by: dreadful on Tue, 23 August 2011, 14:34:51
A month or two I saw post on here that said Rosewill had new mechanical keyboards coming. In that post it said that the brown switch board would most likely be out in August. Since then I haven't seen anything about it. I was wondering if anyone has seen any updates.

Sometimes I think I might be a dyslexic typist if there is such a thing. Every now and then I catch myself typing small words backwards; guess I missed that one.

I'm hoping the major changes are the detachable cable, which is cool if not critical, and being also available in cherry black/brown/red.  Now THAT would be cool, might prompt me to buy more.  Hell just remove the might from there, ;-D, I'd just have to decide if I go for a brown or red, don't see getting both.  Have the blue already.

Hmm. Everybody seems to love reds, except Oqsy who seems to hate them, not clear why. Guess I have some time to read opinions since the RK-9000 w/ reds doesn't seem to be available yet and I'm too poor right now anyway even if it was.  I just bought a speakerphone, keyboards and a touchpad so my I/T budget is pretty much blown right now.

With the addition of the detachable cable and availability with any switch type, I'd venture to say that this will be of the best and most affordable keyboards on the market. It's really too bad I hate the Rosewill logo so much that I'd never consider buying one. I'm pretty sure Newegg owns Rosewill, I'm not sure why they don't just put the Newegg logo on their merchandise.

An Egg logo on my keyboard? I'm still getting used to Duckys Fowling keyboards.
(Attachment) 25051

Didn't you know newegg's logo represents duck eggs? An egg and a ducky will make a wonderful matching set.

@cirE: You can just put a sticker of your choice to cover the Rosewill logo, if you really like this keyboard don't let the logo deter you from getting it! Other way to go is a semi-custom WASDkeyboard at $119, it doesn't have the nifty detachable cable, but the logo is much better, and it's been getting great reviews. No MX reds yet though.
Title: got my rosewill
Post by: fluxrez on Fri, 26 August 2011, 01:32:01
Just received my Rosewill rk-9000 from Amazon.  It shipped from newegg.  It has features the reviews didn't mention.  Namely it comes with two detachable cables, USB and PS/2.  It has slick laser printed keys.  Still Cherry MX Blue switches.  I have to say the red metal plate under the keys sure is a nice touch.

I can't believe I used to use a razer lycosa. Pretty blue lights only are impressive for so long...

The RK-9000 says on the box "Laser Printed".  Is that the same as "Laser Etched"?

I can't really tell by looking at it.
Title: Any update on the new Rosewill keyboards ?
Post by: DaemonRaccoon on Fri, 26 August 2011, 20:33:30
Laser printed generally means that the grooves left by the laser are filled in with paint after the etching is done.

I wish my RK-9000 had a detachable cable.

Yeah, the pair of cables is a really nice change :D
Laser infilled?  Is that what this is?  It feels like decals... VERY thick and yucky feeling legends.  I plan on getting a WASD set, likely otaku, to get rid of the yucky legends.  I also have some thoughts on the rosewill logo, like maybe a mr clean magic eraser :P

mini USB is great, I use the same cable switching it back and forth to my KBC Poker and my digital camera :-)
I had a Comfort Keyboard System with a detachable cable too, but that had the big squarish USB female plug, like the ones found on printers.

I don't like to feel the legend so much. If it is a THICK infill then its not as bad as I thought. I was guessing decals, but I didn't even read the "laser" bit on the box. It is possible that they're laser cut decals and the box wouldn't be incorrect, though. :P
I'll wait for more info before dissing the thick legends any more. It IS a nice board for the price. Hell, its just a nice board.

The logo has gotta go!
Cursive/Script on a keyboard just looks wrong. No logo or something clean and simple would do wonders for the appearance!

Cheap?  In price, yes compared to other mechanicals.  THe quality seems pretty darn good (keep in mind this is my first mechanical).
Knockoff, definately, I think even the font for the "Lock num caps scroll" area is identical to Filcos.
But hey, are those necessarily bad things?

Rosewill isn't a cheap knockoff brand, its newegg's brand that is why it is sold for cheaper. It is a house label of Newegg.com.

Except for external appearance stuff and the detachable cables, it's identical to a Filco. The only differences I've found from my previous tenkeyless mj2 are:

1. Detachable mini USB to USB cable and mini usb to PS/2 cable. (point rosewill)
2. Logo(half a point Filco)
3. Painted plate (wash)
4. Raised legends on the key caps (thicker infill?) (wash, both are thin flimsy junk caps, but if it IS infill on the Rosewill, it will likely be a bit tougher than Filco's trash keycaps)
5. No rubber "condoms" on the fold-out feet. (point Filco)
*6. Numpad present.
*7. MX blues

*options that exist for Filco models, so are not really relevant.

So on those few small differences a Filco comes out a bit ahead IMO, but not enough of a difference to pay a premium. Very minor stuff. If you are considering a 104 key Filco with blues, save yourself the cash and get a Rosewill. (other Rosewill switch options in the works)  The Filco logo is not that much better than the Rosewill, and I hate the Rosewill logo. The saved money can go toward quality PBT or doubleshot ABS keycaps that should be standard on the Filco at its price point! ;)

Overall I'm pleased with the Rosewill, and find it identical to the Filco or better(detachable cables!!) in all of the places that matter for function/quality. I will post some pics after work tomorrow.

Ok, took some pics in a couple different groups because most of the first set sucked so bad they're unusable.

In the box with my own "Anti-Ghost key" installed:

Feet are sans-condom:

Key caps have VERY thick legends, supposedly they're not decals, but they're the thickest legends I've ever come across:

I tried a closeup on the Esc, but my camera and lighting in my home are fail for such details:

Overhead on my work bench:

Short answer: Yes.

Long answer: Yes, they do.

Identical "wavy" texture on the flat surface, same vertical cross-supports, same cylindrical vertical supports in the corners.  I'd guess these caps started out identical to the Filco caps, and legends were added later to Rosewill/Newegg specs.  Or maybe this is what Filco caps will look like in the near future.  It's kind of sad when the Newegg house-brand keyboard has identical caps to the de facto "elite" cherry mx board for cheaper, and with better legends (I still don't like the way they FEEL, but I'll live with it until I can get my hands on something custom that suits me better)

Ok, my camera is not available at the moment, but I did disassemble the board today, and it appears the controller HAS changed since the first edition.  "Filco" appears nowhere on the current controller.  The PCB is pretty cool, it has labels for every key on the back next to the solder points of each switch.  That might come in handy for anyone needing to replace a single switch, as well as making the matrix even easier to eyeball.

In other news, I *did* successfully remove the Rosewill logo today.  Now I have to decide what to do in that location, because that big blank space looks a bit odd.
Hmmm, I wonder if I can get my hands on some very small car badge letters in a decent typeface :D

Keycap legends != case logos. Filco's is that squatty retrofuturist typeface applied like a car dealership badge. The Rosewill logo appears to be pad printed or a similar "painted on" method. No fancy laser infill, no decal, just a layer of white ink sitting on top of the plastic.  In other words, easily dealt with.

Took this on my desk at work. I wish I could get my hands on a Caps Lock,R Shift, and L Shift in
the right size to make the 3 alpha rows white all the way across.

Edit: uploaded better quality pics from home computer... tapatalk is doing weird stuff to my pics lately.

Do the Rosewills use costar or cherry style stabilizers?

I'd rather have a leo since it would come with blank keycaps to begin with and I wouldn't have to switch them out, but I'll get the rosewill if
they use the same stabilizers as filcos.

I wonder how EK is going to get their leos to sell if the rosewills are basically the same thing, but 10 bucks cheaper and with better stabilizers. Not sure about other people, but I'm just going to wait for newegg to get in stock.

Aesthetics play a big role.  The Rosewill is ugly, IMO, so I would buy the Leopold over the Rosewill.  While I do like the Filco-style stabilizers a little better, it's not enough for me to put a big block of ugly on my desk.

The Leopold isn't a whole lot better, so I say get a WASD instead.

That'll hardly be competitive in October, considering the PLU boards that I can get for ~$100. And even less so if WASD has reds by then.

Rosewill build quality is better.

Anyone know if they plan to offer tenkeyless?

You forgot the Tab, backslash, and Enter keys! You can get all these keys in white from wasdkeyboards.com at $1 each if you don't mind blanks.

No I didnt. They fit.  It just looks ugly with those on but not Caps or the shifts. This is much easier on the eyes, and covers all the letters and the bulk of the punctuation putting a white at |\ and/or tab would look utterly nasty, and I won't even consider enter until I can cover all 3 rows.

I really don't find the Rosewill ugly... except for that damn logo!

Seriously, why make what is apparently a high end keyboard and slap that goofy looking logo on it?  Couldn't they just pay a graphic designer to come up with something a little more attractive?  Other than the logo, it pretty much looks like a Filco with a red plate, which isn't really a bad thing in my mind, whatever quibbles I might have about Filcos (no cable channels or detachable cable option, for one) I think it's a nice, squared away board that's kind of elegant and understated, and the logo doesn't scream "I bought my keyboard at Big Lots" like the Rosewill does.

Granted, that's a little hypocritical of me, as I was using a Cherry POS board at work for a while, but when you're paying >$100 for a keyboard, I don't think it's unreasonable to expect it to exhibit a little more class.

That said, has anyone figured out how to remove the logo w/o damaging the case?

I like that just the way it is...  if I can ever get some white doubleshots I was thinking of doing that to my Filco, but with a white space bar, alternating white/black F-keys, and white numbers on the numpad (e.g. classic white/grey layout except with black instead of grey.)

OR maybe do the opposite and use grey with black.

Or do I need to buy another keyboard so that I could take two sets of keys and do both?

But anyway, don't keep us hanging, how did you get the logo off?

Well everyone has been over this already in this thread, but I really like the logo, and the red PCB.

The new Rosewills do have a detachable cable, but still no channels AFAIK.

The controller pic has been edited to allow the text to be read more easily, it was very blown out and I was lucky to get it to this point with some photoshop gradient and levels tricks...  it doesn't appear to be the same controller as the first generation Rosewill boards, as I had suggested somewhere earlier.

I actually like the red plate, just not the logo.  I apologize to any Rosewill reps that may be reading this that may have taken my comments the same way you did, that is not what I intended :)

That said, I think it's not so much that the logo is a real deal breaker for me - if I didn't already have too many keyboards it would definitely be under consideration.  It's one of those things like finding a Porsche with an automatic transmission - it's still a great car, but with this one glaring flaw that is going to annoy you every time you get behind the wheel :)

You Newegg idiots.  I give your Rosewill Logo Zero Eggs.  You can do better than just pulling up an off the shelf font package.

They could have done better by pulling up an off the shelf font package.  Arial^H^H^H^H^HHelvetica would have been an improvement.

Speaking of which, I can't believe that it's taken me until just now to realize that the Filco logo is very similar to the Porsche logo font (but more rounded.)  Maybe that's why I like the Filco logo, it reminds me of products that I associate with quality and enjoyment of use...

I agree with TexasFlood. Most of us touch type anyway, and even those who don't, won't stare at the top right corner of the keyboard while hunt and pecking.

N8N your metaphor was exaggerating, having a bad logo is not nearly as bad as having an automatic transmission. You might say it's like having a Porsche with mismatched logo on the steering wheel. It doesn't affect performance, feel, etc. Just the looks of a part you are not looking at while using.

Rosewill's big block of ugly isn't consistent with the minimalist design of the keyboard.  A nice suit doesn't need a flashy logo on the outside, neither does this kind of keyboard.  Leopold's TenKeyless version has no visible logo at all, truly adhering to its design principle:  elegant and clean.

There is nothing elegant or clean about Rosewill's logo.

In dark red on some of their other products, it's ignorable, which is fine. If you can't afford or come up with a unique and interesting logo to be a focal point, then make it as unintrusive as possible. There is no rule that says you have to have a bigass logo front-and-center on all of your products, so why hurt your sales by slapping a huge ugly logo on an otherwise great product?

I want to do a couple more things and some pricing research before going through the details of removing it safely. For those with auto finish / detail experience, this might come as a "duh" moment. There is no chemical or solvent involved. 100% mechanical removal.

That was exactly the point that I was trying to make.

That said, at least the main quibble with the product seems to be the logo, not something functional or fundamental - which is a good thing.

Is that a pinstripe eraser?
Title: Any update on the new Rosewill keyboards ?
Post by: Oqsy on Thu, 08 September 2011, 20:47:21
N8N got it :D
Yes, a pinstripe eraser.
For those not familiar, it's a rubber "wheel" on a drill spindle.  You put it in your power drill, and use it to rub away pin stripes, stickers, adhesives, etc.  But it does work in this application.  A word of caution, brace your case well so that it doesn't slide around, and only use the minimum pressure / speed required to get the logo to start coming off.  Too little and you'll just sit there shining the logo, too much, and you'll eat into the plastic (heat as much as friction).  It works, but must be done with caution.  I did not want people snapping their cases or eating into the plastic by using it without a proper primer, but alas, I haven't had time yet for a full "Pinstripe eraser on Rosewill logo for Dummies" article yet.  I'll put it next to my "ALPS restoration" article on top of the geekhack "to do" list.

In other words, YMMV depending on hardness of your specific pinstripe eraser's rubber (should be pretty similar if not identical, but I've only used a couple over the years, they last FOREVER), your drill speed and/or torque, how well secured the case is, and the amount of pressure you apply.  If you've never used one before, PRACTICE on some not precious bit of plastic.  Maybe put a sticker or two on it just to get an idea of how it works.  It won't be exactly the same results as with the "paint" of the case, but it will get you closer and help you understand what works, and what just eats up the plastic before you ruin your case.

*I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR DAMAGE OR INJURIES INCURRED BY USING THIS METHOD!*

Just to give a sense of how fun/crazy this is, those things aren't bottle cap sized.  They're like, bread plate sized.  Maybe something between a bread plate and a saucer.  (I eat out a lot.)  It's not like a little thing for your Dremel.  It's ham-hock man-sized, and it goes on a real drill, and I'm actually slightly giddy about taking one to a keyboard.  Good show, governor.

It really is more of an eraser than something gritty, though? It's more heat-and-rubbing, since it's made for like 2000 wpm, as opposed to the elbow grease Magic Eraser. Plus snapping the case off for sandblasting sounds like more work than popping a key off for blasting.  But I could see myself being almost as annoyed with a weird splotchy finish in that spot, as with an ugly logo, so I'd likely end up doing it..  Tho the couple of pics Oqsy's put up didn't seem to have much at all there anymore. I dunno. I'm looking forward to the closeups in his guide.

Oqsy's making it sound like it's not etched and filled or recessed at all.  Just slathered on top.  So a sharpie job would probably look like a sharpie job, since the edges of the letters would if anything make the sharpie tip slide off, not keep it on track.

The idea of removing paint from plastic is really bugging me, so I did a little experiment.

I put a drop of 3-in-one on a plastic luggage tag with a painted logo.  The plastic used in the luggage tag may not be the same plastic used in the Rosewill keyboard, but they certainly look alike.  After soaking it and stirring it for about 10 minutes.  Most of the paint is gone.  3-in-one is all I can find right now, you may get better/worse results with Dot 3 Brake Fluid, WD-40, gasoline, or alcohol.  BTW, 3-in-one smells very close to WD-40.

Please note:
* Test a small drop in a hidden area on you keyboard first!!!  To make sure the agent is safe for your keyboard.
* You may want to remove the top keyboard cover to avoid getting the oil onto keys or LEDs.
* When stirring, use a soft, dull object, such as a Bic pen cap.  I was using the tip of a screw driver, and that scratched the plastic a lot.  Bad idea.
* One drop of 3-in-one can cover about one square inch.  So use sparingly.
* Wipe dry afterwards.  Then wash with dish detergent.

NKRO works great.  I held about 60 keys down at once.  The keyboard comes with two sperate cables.  PS/2 and USB.  No dongle.

Ummm, not a complete answer there.  Is that PS/2 or USB?  We'd really like to know both.

The Filco wire portion is longer, allowing you to hold more keys at one time.  I can get four keys instead of just three at a time.   Important when key pulling.

OK, not THAT important but Richard Gere appreciates the extra reach when pulling Gerbils.

I prefer the Leopold keypuller.
Who needs to hold more keys when the keys just fall out after every key pull

The "new" features are already available.  I think that's just the switches other than blue.

What's GK?

Oh GEEKHACK!  I said Winter.  Although I may have 99% track record in my 2011 Keyboard Predictions (http://geekhack.org/showthread.php?13347-What-Are-Your-2011-Keyboard-Predictions&p=407890&viewfull=1#post407890) I am NOT the Keyboard Oracle.

sorry to piss you off

Why do people keep talking about The Keyboard Lover?
Title: Any update on the new Rosewill keyboards ?

I prefer TKL to TLK.  I"ve seen that more than once, and repeated several times throughout the threads, so it's not just a typo.  TenLessKeys?

The wheel IS abrasive, lest it wouldn't work at all.  But, it's gently abrasive, such that it does NOT scratch automotive finish at all, yet removes stuff stuck to it or on top.  Uncured paint (ie accidents, oversprays, etc) can *often*, but not always, be removed with a pinstripe wheel if you move quickly and know your stuff.  If the solvent in the paint starts to eat into your factory finish tho, you're just wasting time.

Wrong topic.  Rosewill.  Magic Eraser will work eventually, but it shines the snot out of the case (I tried it on the Lock labels last night, had to equally shine the rest of the case to get it uniform, mistake.)  So, as long as you don't mind your case looking like a Das Keyboard, go for it.  Otherwise you'll have to sandblast after the fact to get it back to the more "satin" factory texture.  It seems that is going to have to be my next step, since I was too bold with Mr. Clean's texture eraser.

I wish I had about 5 more Rosewill cases to practice and perfect the method.  Alas, I'll just have to live with my shiny otaku case.

Perhaps I'll consider a Rosewill Logo removal service at some point in the future, after I acquire a decent sandblasting setup.  Another thing to consider as the first step is soda blasting.  Used in auto body to remove paint without affecting the texture of underlying surface (so that you can knock paint off a panel without pitting or marring the hell out of it to the point that you make it more work to get it back to a paintable state again).  This works amazingly well on auto body panels, but requires equipment that can handle the fine baking soda and respirator, etc are a MUST, even if your working area is "enclosed"  It won't be airtight, and the large amount of very fine suspended baking soda dust will choke you out, ahem, "like a boss".

Anyway, I've never heard of anyone using it on plastic, and don't know that it would work at all in this scenario, but might be worth a shot.

But, that's not to say you feel like you have to blast after the wheel?  Or is it?

I'm really interested in the price. I need a 104 board for Mac, and would prefer brown switches, for cheap.

No. Its the magic eraser that fscked the texture. The wheel did not, BUT it CAN. USE CAUTION. PRACTICE!

Anyone try the 3in1 method on their logo yet? Just picked up a cherry red and threw some mcmasterr silicone o-rings on, keyboard's a dream except for this damn eye sore of a logo. Not too keen on ruining the plastic with abrasives, wondering if anyone has had luck using some kind of solvent.

Sounds like a baseball team.  I don't much care for reds either, or at least the couple of setups I've tried with them to date.  I'm a confirmed blue's fan.

Now I have never tried anything except monterey blues and cherry blues, but I just love the clicky!

I've used magic eraser to remove painted on logos before. It is a very mild abrasive.

Ripster speaks truth, I am the Stevie Wonder of geekhack.  The rubber pinstripe eraser tricked worked as well as I could see.  My mistake was experimenting with other methods to get rid of the lock labels.  THAT didn't go well.  My case needs a good sand and polish now, or maybe Ripster of the Healthy Eyes would be willing to spot me a case sandblasting in exchange for a yet unnamed reciprocation. ;)

I ordered one with browns a few days ago.....should be here in 12hrs or so. I am trying to resist the urge to drop another 60 on caps but we'll see how the stock ones look. I've been checking out a few cherry pos boards to salvage some doubleshots.

This is actually going to be the first mechanical keyboard of my own....my friend stole his keyboard back from me D:
