Since repairing my Avant appears to be beyond my abilities I've decided on a new keyboard.
The ones I've been looking at the Unicomp Customizer 104, and the Filco Majestouch here: http://www.amazon.com/Filco-Majestouch-2-Metallic-Keyboard-FKBN104MC2-AI/dp/B004X4TA7S/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1314342044&sr=8-3
I am a bit worried about going from the white alps to the blue cherries on the Majestouch, but is this something to be concerned about?
I do a _lot_ of typing, and a _lot_ of gaming. I'm using a loaner dome switch keyboard that is so filthy it is hard to believe. There are actually dried leaves stuck in it :-( I miss my Avant terribly and it is so frustrating that I cannot fix the one broken key on it :(

Instead of the filco, you could get a Rosewill RK-9000 (http://www.amazon.com/ROSEWILL-RK-9000-USB-MECHANICAL-RETAIL/dp/B004F38Y7Y) (it's the same, actually better: has detachable cable) for $99, or you could get a custom or semi-custom one with engraved keys from wasdkeyboards.com. (http://wasdkeyboards.com) All of these are manufactured by costar.

Such a great deal.. I'm just extremely worried about Cherry Mx blue switches for the gaming.I hear a lot of horror stories. Wish I could test them somehow.. ugh.

If you have a retail store around you with Razer stuff, the Blackwidow has exposed arrow keys so you can try the switches!

If your board has simplified white alps, you can always just try to get another board that is like it. I think depending on how long you've been using white alps you may well not like cherry blues just because they are too different.

Hmm... You play quake? Blues are great. Especially if you use space for jump. Hearing that "thwack" every time you jump is oddly satisfying.

Yes.. I just went to the store though and tried the blues on that razer keyboard. I didn't like the feel, feels lagged or sticky.. have to release the key more to get it to work :-/
and.. m2 jump ftw :-)

Like I said. So generally you'll probably like other alps and possibly buckling springs.
I use mouse 4 for jump.

Does anybody know what exactly the difference is between the Northgate Omnikey Ultra and the CVT Avant Stellar? Other than the layout of course. The keys are said to feel different but I am curious as to why, they use the same switches yes?
