What's your damage?
TIL (Today I learned) that a tree fell in (through) my bedroom. Good thing I'm in Canada.
-
San Juan got hit hard. Fortunately, I live on the other side of the island.
-
Whoah! That was lucky. Lap dancing sure beats being crushed. Unless she went to McDonald's a lot.
I was lucky - she was a solid 7. Curves in all the right places. The majority there were on average 3-5's.
Oh yea, I'm lucky to be alive too.

No power since 7:30am on Aug 28th... which means no water except the few gallons in my rain catch. No showering, but at least I can flush the toilet. The monster tree that would have murdered my house if it was still standing already came down in 3 separate falls, so no damage to the house.
I hate not having power, at least there are showers at work to un-stink me.
-
They extracted the tree today. Bedroom (what's left of it) stinks of pine, lol.
-
I fortunately didn't get any major damage, though a medium sized Norway maple a few blocks over did topple. Power is just fine.

The important question is, did any of your keyboards get hurt?
-

My Kustom Filco has a couple scratches on it, but other than that it's ok. Kind of looks cool though. War wounds!

I agree with your wife. You lack empathy.

It's pretty easy to experience, ripster. Shut off your main breaker and force yourself to drive a minimum of 40 miles to get ice, gas, recharge any batteries you have and anything else that requires electricity. Cleaning becomes an interesting hassle. You can't vacuum your house, do laundry, take a shower, wash your hands (it's amazing how many times you wash your hands once you pay attention to it). Cooking is also entertaining. I'm glad I have a gas stove top, but the oven is electric so no baking/broiling. We also were prepared with ice and the know-how to pack the freezer with everything from the fridge. The milk is still 40°F after over 48hrs.
Are my kids enjoying it? To some extent I'm sure they are, however we didn't have cable TV before now and limited their usage of electronics as well. Other peoples kids I'm sure are driving their parents insane. When the sun is up we play with Lego and other toys, and when it's too dark I turn on my flashlight and we play Scrabble or some other board game.
This is from the perspective of someone that has merely lost power. There are areas of the coast where people no longer have a home to live in. Then there are the people that are devising methods to intentionally drop trees on their property and attempt to defraud their home-owner's insurance.

Wow, you've been so lucky. Can you share some photos of your crushed room, including the keyboards? Those will by truly unique "my computing setup" photos!

Lol - I already moved my computer to another room before I took photos...but I can post a couple of the ones I took and of the filco tonight.

I'm glad no keyboards were harmed during this disaster!

Thanks. Everyone said I was lucky, which I definitely am as at 10:30 AM I'm sure I would have likely been in there when it happened.
The tree guys said it was probably the second worst one they've ever seen. We're still kinda shaken up about it TBH.

I'm happy to see that no damage was done to your person \KL.
When I saw it on the news I thought about geekhackers members that like there in USA. I hope nobody has taken any damage apart from material ones that can be repaired.
-
Thanks Guillaume =)
-
Wow. Hope you have some insurance that will cover part of the damage.

Should be all covered under homeowners hopefully.

Five days later.....just got my internet / phone / cable back
-
Got my power back yesterday around 3:30pm... Cable internet had never gone down if I wanted to burn UPS battery time.

Seems somebody decided to have fun with this:

You can see the scratch on my Filco to the right of my Up arrow here:

There was also a ton of ceiling bits inside. The switches don't seem to have been affected and I cleaned it out for the most part.
Filco is definitely a quality board.

From an optimistic view, a couple light scratches next to those old school looking keys further adds to character. Glad to know you're OK after such mess, good luck with all the stuff you'll need to sort out.

Thanks and I agree!
