I bought 2 86u realforce topre boards from elitekeyboards last month. I noticed recently that some keys(different on the two boards) have a slight ringing sound(metallic, like springing vibrating) sound when you bottom out. it is slight so if you don't keep your ears close you don't hear. but they definitely exists and it is pronounced on some of the keys, on one board it is worst on k, the other one worst on down arrow key.
it is not a big deal but I do want to hear if other topre users observe the same thing.
Thanks!
Jim.

I have an 87UB and a 103UB and only hear "thock"
-
I don't have a Topre, but I wouldn't be surprised it would ring if you pressed your ear against the keyboard, there is after all a spring in there whereas regular rubber-domes haven't.
If it doesn't bother you, the following applies:
SMITH: Doctor, it hurts when I do this.
DALE: Don't do that.

Thanks, for most of the keys, it is only thock. for the ringing keys the ringing does last a second or two after the click.. anyways it is probably only on 86u variable force..
-
It is more pronounced on the stabilized keys.
-
Ping!!
-
No pinging on my 87U variable silent Realforce.
-
Mine pings.
I chose to ignore it.
Call me a mensch.
P.S. Redpill didn't believe me in that OTHER ping thread when I said Topres ping too. (http://geekhack.org/showthread.php?18731-A-sad-day-in-Filco-Ninja-Land&p=360130&viewfull=1#post360130)
I gladly ignore it if at least someone shares the situation. or else it really doesn't justify my purchase of realforce over some cherry browns.
Thanks!
-
The cherry mx ringing issue cannot be manually replicated. It's sporadic.
Even elitekeyboards said so in my original ping! Poll.
See link in sig for more details.

Hahahahaha!
Ahem, excuse me...
Hahahahaha!

Ringing sound comes from slightly misalignment of conic ring. I've also experienced that sound when I failed to reassemble my HHKB.
You can cure this by rebuild of key switch PCB. Rebuilding Topre board is very time consuming job, if you can ignore the sound I recommend not to do.
As an user I think Topre switch should not have the ringing sound, though I don't know Topre's criteria of quality control or elitekeyboard's return policy.
Regarding Ping sound:
In my case some amount of grease on stabilizer reduced ping sound on my HHKB. This also could reduce space bar noise dramatically.
I used a Tamiya CERA-GREASE HG, it is not special thing and easy to find here in Japan. I also tried very age-old Shimano DURA-ACE GREASE before but not good, the result of Tamiya is better.
I think original grease Topre uses is short of amount and too firm.

Upon disassembly of my HHKB there was very little grease on the stabilizers, yet some of it has dripped into wet blotches.

You should RMA it. EK has no problems selling returned Topre keyboards at the classifieds.

Do you have proof of that?
-
Do you remember that Asian guy who returned his HHKB? Do you remember that guy who ordered a Leopold and received a Realforce 103UB by mistake.
Well, I simply did the math, though this (http://geekhack.org/showthread.php?21273-Realforce-103UB-and-White-HHKB) is not proof.
-
That link is certainly not proof. He says very clearly in the ad that they are used.
-
I have never said that those are new.
-
Oh ok good point. Sorry I guess I kind of inferred that.

I'll give it a try but return policy on EK website looks very unfavorable..
-
Ringing sound comes from slightly misalignment of conic ring.
Could it have been dislodged during shipping, maybe from strong vibration or strong force?
-
This clearly is a Topre QC issue and requires immediate attention.
If not a poll.
Could be. But unlike cherry mx ringing it's only been reported by one user.

well, Brian declined my exchange request. I don't want to negotiate because I really have no proof it is indeed defects or just tolerance issue.
lower your expectations and buy the browns. In the morning I tried my colleague’s filco brown. it is louder in the bounce, but I didn't hear a damn ping.
-
Wonder what iMav thinks.
My opinion/position has not changed.
-
Make that five
My 87u silent pings on the Home key. It was not there when it came in.
I probably did not store it properly. Some parts of the keyboard was left to be slightly depressed. Now my arrow cluster feels like 40g with less tactility.

I can't help posting the reply from EK here. I don't like the tone of the reply. just hope there are more competitors in this high end keyboards business here.
I'm sorry, I'm not going to issue an RMA for this. It's really too fishy.
If you have dead, flat, or squishy feeling keys then we have something
to talk about, as the spring is the only moving part inside a Topre
switch; it's either centered and free moving or it's not. Otherwise,
anyone who finds 10 keys with which they're dissatisfied with the sound
of on two keyboards will have no problem finding similar switches on a
replacement keyboard. Knowing the kind of quality control Topre has, I'd
say you need to lower your expectations, because if Topre can't meet
them, I don't know of any company who can.
-
Topre quality control is horrible. I know it for a fact.
YGPM.
-
If it works as designed, why would they issue an RMA?
I believe you can't engineer a switch with a spring it which never pings. You really might have to stop and not listen to the pings, somewhat similar to how you should learn not to bottom out Cherry MX browns by not thinking about it.
-
The solution to ping is quite easy, and involves common household items, such as a ballpoint pen inserted in the ear canal repeatedly until the ping stops.
My POS Logitech rubber dome pings. My ears ping on their own sometimes, without pressing tensioned buttons.
Also I would like to RMA the two hours I spent reading the original closed ping thread. Is there a form somewhere I can fill out? I am dissatisfied with every third or fourth thread I read on here.
QC is awful.

I don't believe your rubber dome pings.
Ping is an inherently metallic sound. No metal spring. No ping.

Unless you are talking about a Fujitsu Peerless of course. Spring over rubber dome over membrane.
But if you have a Fujitsu Peerless you have MUCH bigger problems than ping.
Who needs proof when you have anecdotal evidence and hearsay?

"I crack myself up with that one"

Dude these are Mechanical Swtich Keyboards. Every spring can ping vibrate producing resonance or sound. You know what you are getting into when you buy it. If you want a silent keyboard get a rubber dome.
I think all this pissing and moaning about noises from a keyboard is crazy especially since we are all talking about mechanical switch keyboards.
If I were selling these keyboards I would never RMA anything because it pinged. It's like Unicomp accepting RMA's because their buckling spring keyboards were way too clickly and loud.
-
You've got to make an exception for a "dud" switch though - it might work, it might sound really off if you press it or it might be a combination of the two. That's an issue, mostly concerning a broken switch or a badly seated buckling spring.
However, I do stick to my point with regards to ping and resonance: you can't make a spring act like it isn't there, and springs can reverberate (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reverberation#Spring_reverberators).
