Title: K-pop Thread
Post by: Hydroid on Thu, 01 September 2011, 08:09:29
I think we need a dedicated k-pop thread to discuss it. Instead of randomly hi-jacking other threads every so often.

A couple of days ago I discovered a group called Davichi and have really really been digging their songs. They aren't a cutesy/sexy dance group, but just 2 singers with no autotune who put out some pretty nice songs to listen to.

But if all you want is some cutesy/sexy dancing then I got you sorted too:

I'm not a huge k-pop fan, but as a GSL regular I've been exposed to a decent amount of it.  The best I've heard by far is Madonna by Secret:

@ noodles - Alright, how about I start a video of the day and I'll get through those listed first...so you'll have to come back each day for more. :P

I like the few K-Pop I have heard, but I do not know about it much. I like 2NE1, G-Dragon, Girls Generation, and a few of H.O.T. songs. I also liked the 5 dolls and Secret tracks posted in this thread. What else can you reccomend me? Basically I like more electo house pop, so along those likes is good.

Sydney Australia :) It's pretty much the first k-pop concert here so people are coming from all around. There is a plane that has been chartered from Perth and a few buses from Melbourne...I'm glad I live a 1h30m train ride from it :P I already paid $200 for my ticket (didn't feel $320 was worthwhile to get 5 rows closer) and IDK if I'd want to add on bus or plane tickets and accomodation if staying overnight.

lmao no offense taken man. I'm not acutally Australian so I'm not really too patriotic about the country yet. :P South Africa is still home to me at the moment. But in regards to your question, I'm not too sure how you'd find out about them. I have a friend who is a lot more into K-pop than I am and he is the one who told me about the concert. I'd guess that your best bet would be to try look into finding twitter accounts or sites for the record labels that manage some of the groups such as jyp, smtown, loent and a few others, I'm not really that clued up about the groups themselves or the fangroup side of it which apparently is a good source of info, I let friends of mine do all that for me and I just enjoy listening to the music lol.

EDIT: I just asked one of my friends to list a few fan sites that would have concert news/info and here is what he gave me.

dkpopnews
kpoplive
allkpop
koreaboo

he also said he can pass on a few more if you can give a couple of names for groups she likes.

just don't watch the korean drama's or k-drama's then you'll be a lost cause.
on another note a few korean movies are notable, notable in the fact that china/hongkong has produced crappy movies for the last 10 years (few 1 movie a year exceptions like infernal affairs), japan movies, besides those ring, messed up movies in the beginning of the decade, nothing much after that really, so yea korea movies are my currently goto movies for asian stuff.

Haha, I'm still a little undecided whether I'll do a vlog type thing covering the whole event or if I'll just record individual performances and upload them, or if I'll skip the video altogether and just take photos. I think it'll all come down to a test on seeing how far my 16GB SD card will go when recording HD.

Haha yes it does seem like we have similar tastes in k-pop then. I have been a fan of Secret for quite a while and enjoy some 2NE1 and After School occasionally too!

@Lanx - Yeah I think it's because they haven't been promoting anything new for about half a year in addition to a lot of other popular groups beginning promotions such as SNSD, KARA, G.NA, T-ARA etc.

True they do seem to be very autotuned which is why they aren't on my daily listening lists. Most of my friends are really into them so I do still listen to them or else I'm out of the loop. Park Bom's singles are actually worth listening to though.

anyone listen to k-pop boy bands?, again my fiance' is the one that listens to k-pop and by proxy i hear it as well, along with seeing the playlist and youtube and having a minor interest in what she's doing for conversation, i know and have heard bigbang, infinite, super junior and prolly others.
recently she's into watching ppl cover the dance video's, the trend seems to be korean dance studios put up a cover of a dance on youtube and that's how they advertise, along with the usual person that just wants to do a dance cover. off the top of my head these ppl are the good ones.
i think "Maybe" cuz of the outfits, it's better than the t-ara video...

asian pop internet? i'm not too keen on this internet radio, care to give a quickie lesson? i've been trying to find a streaming "on the go" thing for the iphone/droid like pandora/slacker, but no go on that front. There's also this school that i guess is like the Julliard of k-pop dancing in korea and they make covers with current students and they look really good, i'll ask fiance' for a link later, they actually do good GG covers, other GG covers i've seen are bad. There was this world wide GG cover contest i guess, and it's so sad that they have guys dance along with the girls and the guys are 90% of the time better than all of the girls on the team.

This is just a sub-station of a broadcasting network here in Australia (SBS) http://www.sbs.com.au/chinese/program/popasia/?siteLanguage=en_AU They do have an iPhone app atm for on the go stuff, and are apparently working on one for Android. (I'm waiting on that so I can start listening on the go). But for general music that isn't k-pop I'm a little lost on helping you. Sorry. I avoided listening to most music until I got into k-pop. I did listen to a k-pop station on here too before, but the SBS one has much higher quality than that particular station had at the time. http://www.shoutcast.com/

Today I went out and bought a few kpop albums. I got the SNSD 3rd album repackage (Mr. Taxi version of The Boys), the SNSD Japanese Album and G.Na's Black & White Album. Also bought G.Na - Top Girl, but they made a mistake at the counter and I ended up with 2 SNSD Japanese albums instead and only noticed when it was too late to travel an hour back to the store. :P Atleast that sorts out a Christmas present for another friend of mine.
