Title: Model M Silver With Strange CSC Badge
Post by: djhpwizard on Tue, 06 September 2011, 01:29:52
I thought about buying this for my first mechanical but didn't feel like restoring a potentially nasty keyboard. Interesting though, because of the badge from Davidson College CSC department. Also, it appears to be older than the oldest model m ever sold on clickykeyboards.com (they've got a refurbished one of these for $200).

It's also not a wireless Microsoft keyboard -- for some reason it says that in the item specifics.

Hmm, is it really that strange? Isn't it just a sticker that Davidson College has put on the keyboard themselves (like an asset tag)?

^This.
I sold a keyboard from my school. I peeled of the tab that said "Property of " Seemed like it would actually lower the value. That just looks like the standard sort of "THIS BELONGS TO XXX" badge.

Clickykeyboards has sold lots of Model M's older than this one.  In fact probably half of the 1390120's were made prior to this date.  Have a look here (https://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=p648qGSv2K7BaV4uBITuPeA).  Clickykeyboards has separate databases for different models of the Model M's.  January of 1986 was the oldest they've sold.

But those listed on Clickkeyboards aren't even the oldest.  The oldest known Model M is this (http://geekhack.org/showthread.php?11311-Bought-a-Model-M-from-1985&highlight=earliest), dated 1985.6.10, which I happen to now own.  It is a terminal board, but can easily be converted to a PC interface by swapping out the controller board.

Just in case you're interested, the earliest known Space Saving Keyboard Model M is this (http://geekhack.org/showthread.php?17190-Cheap-Model-M-space-saver/page2) one, dated 1987.5.29.

Poor choice of words on my part, it's definitely a sticker. I thought this board was neat because it wears it's history. Thanks Sam for correcting my erroneous statement about clickykeyboards. What lead me to say so was the data on this listing (which I guess is inaccurate?).

Speaking of history, congrats on owning the oldest known Model M!
