Title: KBC Poker - tear out a LEDs?
Post by: pyro on Mon, 12 September 2011, 10:34:20
I don't like blue switches much, so I bought an old Cherry G81 and replaced all blue stems and springs in the Poker with black ones. All except for the switches with LEDs in them, since the LEDs seem to be mounted on top of the switch cover.

My guess is it shouldn't affect the rest of the keyboard if I just teared the LEDs out by force, but I'm not sure about that. Does anyone have defect LEDs on the Poker or has actually figured out how to open a switch with an LED on it?

Desolder the LED from the underside, tearing it out could damage the PCB.

I don't have access to a soldering iron right now. It should be possible to cut the metal contacts just under the LED, though. But would my Poker work afterwards?

It would be pretty difficult to cut the LED's pins, the other switches get in the way for most of them.

So I desoldered them. My Poker now has a full set of ghettoreds (50cN) with a green-spring grey-stem spacebar. That's what I was looking for from the start.

I now also have a full character set of heavy blues (black springs, blue stems) but I still don't like them. The click and force peak are just too irritating, I bottom out half of the time (but almost never with the ghettoreds).

tl;dr
GHETTOREDS!
