Title: Travel with Keyboards
Post by: kingqway on Tue, 20 September 2011, 00:17:33
Hey guys,

Second thread I'm starting up here, sorry for so many questions. But in any case, has anyone been carrying their keyboards around often, that are NOT tenkeyless? I recently got myself a Leopold brown, so now I have two mech keyboards, and the main reason was so I could have a keyboard on the move. Now while it seems kind of odd that I don't use the leopold to carry around, and use the Das, I prefer the Das to be the one I use on the move.

Well, before I wear it out too much from travel, has anyone had any issues that arised mainly due to traveling? Because, I do not have a keyboard bag for my Daskeyboard; what I do instead is use the retail box that the das originally came with, and I stuffed it  with a layer of the plastic bubble wrap (the thing you can pop) so that it doesnt clunk around if I suddenly bump it while trying to stuff all my school materials in the bag. I place I usually walk around with it is in university, so I'm curious if there's any damage that can happen, more specifically to the wires.

Usually I can take really good care of materials, and I'm sure I can prevent damage being dealt to the keyboard except the wires. Since the box space is relatively short , the wire is usually bent from the base where its attached to the keyboard when you put it in the box. Will this create a wear/tear at that base, and eat away at the wire? Because thats the main damage I'm concerned about. I actually never bothered googling keyboard bags, because I'm not sure if I really need one, unless they are really helpful. The only keyboard bags I currently know of are the ones purchasable for the tenkeyless @ elitekeyboards, but those are tenkeyless. I guess I'll go google some non-tenkeyless ones later, but I'm curious as to how my current carrying-setup is in terms of safety, especially for the wire.

Thanks again!

Hmm.. this question came up a few times before.  You might wanna check out this thread (http://geekhack.org/showthread.php?20260-Carrying-case-for-full-sized-keyboards).

Good luck. =)

Razer has a keyboard bag for $30 that fits many full sized boards. It may be a worthy investment if you travel with it a great amount. I've heard tales of the cable bases breaking on certain boards (mainly a Poker, someone broke their's very recently), but a Das is apparently pretty sturdy. I wouldn't worry too much about cable wear, but make sure you give the base a little slack. I doubt pulling on it at an angle is a very good practice.

Okay, thanks a lot for the input. Hmm, I checked the other keyboard bag thread, and I'm not sure how much I would like the razer or the random bags from marshalls that they linked in there. I'll keep looking, but maybe the set up I have with the plastic bubble bags & box should be good enough (for now).
