Just deposited my bonus check in the bank, and I have decided to buy a mechanical keyboard. Though, I am really confused about which direction I should go. First off I want to know your opinions on which Cherry switch I should consider. I spend most of my time gaming so I figured a linear switch would be best. But which one, Blacks or Reds? I am also considering Leopold and Filco, as the WASD keyboards don't have infill lettering available at the moment. I also see Rosewill keyboards as being a good value, but I do not know how much longer it will be until they get the linear models listed on their website. The only mechanical keyboard I have experience with was a terminal keyboard here at the airport which was using Cherry black switches. Also Elite keyboards doesn't seem to have a TKL model with Cherry reds. Your thoughts?
(please move to keyboard forum, my apologies)

You could start by finding a retailer in your area that carries one of the popular 'gamer' keyboards with black switches and try it out at the store. You also need to decide between full size and tenkeyless as that will eliminate some brands and some retailers.
-
I think I would prefer I tenkeyless. This doesn't have to be written in stone, but I like the idea of having a smaller keyboard.
-
will you game with the kb. What games. Do you type heavily with your actual robberdome kb?
-
I went with tenkeyless as well and it is a more comfortable arrangement with the mouse, that leaves out WASD. You might want to reach out and see if there are any geekhack'rs in your area that would be willing to let you check out some boards so you can be certain on the switch type. You could also just buy a few and sell the ones you don't want in the classifieds ;)

I play mostly MMO's and FPS games. My current keyboard is a Logitech G11, and I am actually a pretty terrible typist. This is one of the reasons I am getting a mechanical keyboard so I will be more motivated to learn to type properly. I currently live in Atlanta Ga if anyone is interested.
-
For me, the mx-blues are the most fun to type on. YOu might get motivated by using them. Is the numpad important for you in MMOs?
Im a FPS gamer and I game on my Filco (mx-reds). I'm also working on my essay on this keyboard. I dont like it for typing, at all. FPS gaming with a tactile switch is a no go for me. Surprisingly enough, I enjoy typing with my HHKB.
If you have the money, I would go Topre...

Blues are entirely too loud and Topre are too expensive. Not having any mechanical experience I am having a hard time justifying the $120+ price tag already.

Ducky MX blue or brown tenkeyless are $90 shipped BATTOU62!!!!

I can understand not investing in Topre. However, if you think about it, $120 or so for a quality piece of hardware that will probably last longer than your hard drives or graphics card is not that unreasonable of a justification.

At first, I bought used keyboards here on the classified section. It gave me the opportunity to test various keyboards at a bargain (bought, tested, sold, bought tested sold etc...)
-
I think I'm gonna start out with a Leopold TKL with Cherry Black Switches, then try out a Rosewill with Cherry Reds when they are available.
-
ok ! I guess you're not into tactility at all :)
-
I don't really know. I figured linear would be a good place to start :)

The G-keys and Functions keys are not Cherry MX Red. That's kinda disappointing if you ask me.
-
Yea... I wonder why they did that :X Looks like they just welded on the gkeys to the side of the k60 and called it a k90 :D. The F keys are cherry red i think. The keys on the top, media controls, backlight buttons are not though.

It's confirmed (http://geekhack.org/showthread.php?22062-Corsair-gets-into-keyboards-(MX-Red)&p=419100&viewfull=1#post419100) that Function keys are not MX Red :(
