Title: Filco Ping = angelic choir?
Post by: gmorf33 on Tue, 27 September 2011, 14:02:27
Is it just me or is the "filco ping" more like a choir of angels singing in rejoicement when you hit that perfect typing rhythm where you are just going nonstop at 75+ WPM?   Its become a sound I take great satisfaction in when i can make my keyboard sing.

I'd like to note that my POS iONE that I bought to have a non-descript mechanical at work doesn't ping.

I can foresee a sub-forum arising:

"Ping"
discuss all ping related issues here

Honestly it's not a big issue! For some it maybe an issue.

Should not put anyone off a mechanical keyboard! i.e. Cherry switch based!

For me the put-off of Topre was that it is a reinvented yet more sturdy rubber dome keyboard. Sorry Blasphemy to some but I am entitled to that opinion no matter how ill-educated such a comment may be. Now that I have a mechanical Filco Brown I think the whole ping thing is blown out of proportion just as my ill-educated comment as above-described! not mentioning the Topre fart ("Topre Fart" is a copyright of ripster)

Edit:

Btw - I am starting to hate this place! I am considering a Topre 87 45g uniform :-), just because I am curios. Damn it!!

The issue was more about folks who were expecting a quiet keyboard from browns and actually getting a loud one.

Not so much about whether or not you liked the "ringing" sound.

If you hate ping, then you hate mechanical keyboards. Have you ever heard a model M? They could have used one of them as the liberty bell.

Not really. I currently own 3 mechanical keyboards, none of which have the ringing issue (note: not ping). And I love all of them.

A ring is much louder and sustained (not sure exactly how much). Probably not many sound samples because it's a sporadic issue and not everyone who experienced it took time to record it when they owned the keyboard.

Seriously, who records the sound of a noisy keyboard? I mean maybe if I DIDN'T have a job...

Ripster does, in the name of keyboard science!

Yes, I know. Hence the "having a job" part of my post.

How many seconds separates a Ring from a Ping and why aren't there any sound samples with a sustained Ring?

I just answered that. Is this groundhog day?

Ok. I read a lot.. A LOT about ping on this forum and I never understood the seeming negative connotation the word has.. I LOVE a mechanical ping sound. It just makes the experience more enjoyable to me.

Now, the ping on my C trumpet, THAT requires some repair.

A little ping is fine and expected.

A loud ring (like when the customer service lady down the hall can hear it) becomes annoying and is obviously not what the manufacturer intended.

The pinging from within a switch I am good with, they have springs in them what do you expect? The pinging of a vibrating plate I am not okay with, though.
