Hey how are you guys doing? I am new to the forum and I'd like to introduce myself. My name is Daniel, I live in Seattle and I'm here to learn about keyboards and hopefully find one that suits me. ( I'm secretly looking for a Northgate Omnikey Ultra T :help: )
-
I looked at those and they seem like great keyboards!! 250$$ worth though? im not so sure. The reason I wanted an Omnikey is due to the F key placement on the left of the keyboard within easy reach. Also saw the Unicomp 122 key emulator but the key on the left are not the F keys. Im really leaning towards a unicom or a refurb Omnikey ( still expensive for a used keyboard imo )
-
To be honest i am quite open to suggestions. I really like the IBM model M keyboards and that's the reason i was leaning towards a Unicomp since its new and its priced right. Not too sure about the difference in quality and feel, but then I have not had the opportunity to test either out. My experience with mechanical keyboards is nil except what I have researched for the past week. I have about 5 rubber dome keyboards in my closet and i abhor them :). Its like trying to type on dough after a few weeks

Other than that what do you guys suggest for a full size keyboard that is good quality, mechanical switches ( clicky tactile, preferably alps )? Also its nice to have the option to replace keycaps for color ones and customize the keyboard. I saw the WASD keyboards but I am not too sure on quality/$

Once you drop the left function keys thing I'd still say a buckling spring board. Being back on a (somewhat poorly, at least compared to what I expected) assembled one is really nice, haven't used one for awhile.
WASD won't be alps, and besides getting used ones complicated alps no longer exists, so you already know some of the really top examples of those.

Sup daniel, I am also in the seattle area, welcome to geekhack :D

Wow, we are getting more and more folks from the Seattle area! Welcome.

I also live in the U district :)
Welcome.

Welcome, read the wikis and ripsters sig for answers to most of your questions. If you are looking for a Northgate omnikey they are selling pretty cheap atm (by omnikey standards), I saw an omnikey 102 go for an ebay record low $38 the other day.
In terms of a keyboard search, if you are going the short route, a new board with cherry browns or blues should suit you (you can try these out on a Razer blackwidow at the store because they have a little demo patch). Are you interested in mechanical boards for gaming? If so a model M would not be good, but they are really nice for typing.

Welcome to Geekhack.
You've actually made a good point. Where do people introduce themselves?? I guess in the off topic forum? I don't know. People more often than not make their first posts just anywhere.

Hi, boss, champ, buddy, kid, Grandpa?

Welcome and once you go clack you never go back
If you list some of the things you like or have tried , many here can give great suggestsions. I think what I've ready here the most from people is that for the first Mechanical board go blues or browns. Then buy from there.

Welcome to GeekHack! Click my sig for an easy to browse guide to mechanical keyboards =)

If you like buckling springs and the function keys to the left, how about a Model F AT?
NB: I've never tried one, they were already obsolete by the time I started using computers regularly. Exposure to computers in elementary school was all Apple II series. But the Fs have a good reputation here although they supposedly make a hell of a racket.

I don't remember mine pinging, I just couldn't deal with the layout. I didn't think I'd care. That and I'd have to mess with the spacebar still (though it wasn't as bad as space invader spacebars to start with).

I think there would be more new members and less lurkers if there was an intro section.

WASD have been getting very high marks on quality from all Geekhackers that bought one. Plus the owner of the company has a forum here and is VERY responsive. If you want a clicky keyboard with custom keycaps, a WASD with mx blue (clicky) switches would be an excellent choice.

Welcome to you. Let me introduce myself as Harry Moss. One day I will change it to a more whimsical moniker, but for now my actual name will have to do.
I found this forum a few months ago, just when I was getting re-addicted to IBM Model M keyboards, and it has been very helpful. It has also cost me a lot of money.
Hopefully, I have amused and/or entertained some members here, since I have little keyboard knowledge to dispense, but I have contributed several interesting "artistic flourishes" to various off topic conversations.
So far, nobody has criticized me or told me I was doing anything wrong, so I take it to mean that I am being tolerated, at least.

Thank you for the warm welcome everyone. I apologize for not being able to reply these past few days, but just upgraded to a new motherboard and processor and my rig had its innards everywhere :). So I found myself some Cherry POS keyboards at the local PC Recycle place for 10$ a pop. Got a used one and a spare one for parts. Clicky still....but uses a very strange type of switch. Never saw one like that. Metal plate base with holes for switch placement. Weird... Im going to take pics as soon as gf gives fancy camera back :). Model number for keyboard is G81-8000LPCUS
Also to all the Seattle area residents....we need to boycott the mayor about the new parking regulations....free parking AFTER 8 PM on Saturdays? BOOO
