Title: Filco Majestouch 2 Red or Filco Ninja Brown?
Post by: slimfast on Fri, 07 October 2011, 18:12:30
Hello :)

I'm looking to get a new keyboard to go with my new PC and was thinking along the lines of a Filco Majestouch 2 with Red switches or the Filco Ninja tenkeyless Brown.

I'm currently using an old Logitech keyboard with laptop style keys and a G13 but want to try something new.

I have quite small hands and I think when I'm gaming, I use light to medium pressure on the keys, aside from when I'm running away on BF3.

I'm based in the UK so getting either of these keyboards isn't much of an issue and the price difference is £54. I have one of those keyboard trays so the numerical keypad isn't a problem but I like the smaller Ninja version.

If money be damned, would you go for the full size Majestouch Red or the Ninja TKL Brown in my situation. I'll be using it primary for gaming; BF3, Civ 5, Skyrim.

Any advice would be most welcome.

Thanks.

Hi

Welcome to GH!

Grab the ninja TKL brown : not too long ago I was in the same boat as you, well sort of! I was pondering between a cherry brown and RealForce. I was recommended the browns by a number of people and it's great so far. Browns are typically considered as the middle ground between typing and gaming or so is the impression you get frequenting the forum. Keep in mind KeyboardCo only carries the ANSI versions of ninja and red filco: i.e. small enter key and longer shift. I went TKL because I rarely used the numpad (just think to yourself: do you ever use it?), so it made sense for me. I went ANSI because the keyboard layout does not bother me as my laptop is ANSI and because I've just started to mess about with different keyboard layouts - currently enjoying QGMLWB by carpalx on my ninja browns :).

Don't think about it too much :-) but it is an investment - total damage to my wallet - 121GBP ( delivered [KeyboardCo]- lol no pound sign on my ANSI)

Edit: Just mapped € and £ via xmodmap - that's better :)

I suppose the Filco MJ2 red was 54 pounds more expensive.

In that case, Filco Ninja brown is preferred.

Thanks for the advice guys.

I'm intrigued by the 'typing on a cloud of boobs' things with the reds. That sounds awesome! I was looking at the red switch mechanism, and I'm guessing they are the quietest?

Are the red switches overrated and not worth the premium?

The experience is subjective, so you should buy both and compare them yourself. Then you can keep the keyboard you want and sell the rest.

You can also keep both and become a keyboard collector. Most of us are.

Thanks Tony. I'm not in the position to buy several keyboards. I want the best now and have no regrets later, but you're right, without testing I won't know which is best for me.

From what I gather, the browns are pretty good all round and I like the look of the Ninja TKL too - I might take a gamble and buy one. Would you say it's a good purchase or should I be looking at something else?

Thanks.

Browns are safe bet if you want to have only 1 keyboard. Like a Ford or Toyota.

Reds are more flashy and more expensive, like a sport car.

Hello guys, just a quick update. I got my Filco tenkeyless UK version Brown from The Keyboard Company about 20 minutes ago and so far.. I can't believe how amazing this thing is. The quality is wonderful and it feels so nice to type on. I was expecting the brown switches to have a clicky feel with the tactile bump but nothing. I though the red switch would feel more like this.

It's lived up to more than I was expecting. Awesome, I just want to type.

yay

I want a UK Filco Ninja TKL with red switches now :D

Really happy with The Keyboard Company too..!

Type lighter, and the brown bump are more noticeable.

You will notice the brown bump more clearly when you got the Filco red. The red has no bump whatsoever.

That's awesome , Out of curiosity , where were you going to get the Reds from ? When I looked a few weeks ago I couldn't find the Filco reds anywhere at a reasonable price. Of course I was looking for the TKL version only.

Congratulations on your new board.

I have dealt with kbco too and have always found them excellent too. (Not that I have ever had any problems with EK, WASD, MECH or AusPC either - something about the alignment between good firms choosing to stock good gear I suspect.)

Thanks for the replies guys. I thought you lot were nuts buying many different keyboards but I understand why now.

I could only find the 104 key version for £168. I ordered it but changed my mind in the morning and gave KeyboardCo a call. They were really good. The poor guy experimented on my behalf over the phone, tapping away at the red and brown, and he didn't really notice much of difference, so I changed the order. I bought some blue WASD keys too and yeah wow, uber impressed.

I was talking about mechanical keyboards with my friends today, and bless, they were trying to act interested but I could see this glazed look on their faces.. :D

Oh well..
