Title: Slight bend in filco tenkeyless
Post by: stariz on Thu, 13 October 2011, 07:18:13
My filco majestouch 2 tenkeyless arrived the other day and I noticed that the front edge has a slight arc to it; is that normal? It looks kind of like the one in this picture:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/daybreaker12/3006925493/

There is definitely a bowing of the front edge; if I push a ruler against it, I can rock it a bit and gaps appear between the ends of the ruler and the board.

Also, is there anything you can do about ping? I notice if I hit the spacebar on the left portion of it, it sounds normal, but if I press the right there is a loose pingy sound as soon my thumb touches the key.

Bend it back. If you can't, buy another table that fits.

Hmm, how much is it bent? It's hard to tell from your picture. Care to put a ruler nearby it?

---

Anyway, yes ABS does have a somewhat large elastic range. It' IS a polymer, so it's what you'd expect. I'd say your only hope of deforming it plastically (where it'll bend back and stay that way) is to take it apart, and try.

Really, the only other thing I can recommend is to contact the seller about a return (then buy a WASD)

Stick it in the freezer , see if it draws up.... If not , Stick it in the oven see if it expands.

This is a kind of joke on a sound principle.    I highly recommend trying this with out the innards. I would say one half at a time , but based on your description , it may be both halves with the issue ?   I would def take it apart and try the flexing on one half or the other. Also to verify that the steal plate itself isn't what's warped.

Nope.  I don't care.  I didn't care, either, when I jacked it from Google Images.

The picture I posted wasn't my actual keybaord; it was just one I found in a google search as I was trying to see if it was normal or not. It's not overly warped, but you can definitely notice it.

Here is my board:

I contacted keyboard co and I tried bending it how they suggested, but the front edge seems to just spring back into the arced shape. I will try taking it apart and bending it that way I guess.

RMA it....

The frame is very durable vs flex if you want to give it another try.

Your Windows key looks printed offcenter.

The front curve on a Filco wouldn't bother me (I see it on a LOT of keyboards) but the off center Windows key would.

Lol I didn't even notice the off-center windows graphic; it's the same on both of them. I Don't care about that actually as I planned to change them anyway. The front bend really annoys me, it makes me want to eat a burrito then step on a stapler and draw a picture of an angry plant glimmering in space, but hay.

Is the top cover section actually metal? I thought there was just a back plate and then a plastic facade. It doesn't seem to respond much to bending. I tried yelling at it too but nothing...

The top section is not metal, niether is the bottom section, just hard plastic. If you ever have to take the case off, you will see how much force you have to put into that beast to make the spacebar area pop off, and it doesn't hurt it.

You should not bend a $160 Filco keyboard, it's too risky. Bend the $30 table that hold your keyboard and your CPU. Buy another table that fits.

Or better, bend your hands to fit the keyboard.

The table is worth a lot more than $160 and my hands are priceless.

In other words, does the keyboard rock on your desk or is it a cosmetic issue?

Nah keyboard sits fine, its just the front edge that bows out in front of the space bar - the frame underneath is straight.

Looks fine to me, might be even normal. Who said it's supposed to be all straight lines? Lot's of products have slightly curved edges.

I just got a couple Filcos and they both had the off center up arrow key. One of them was DOA... Maybe Filco has cut costs and is on its way to lower quality boards?

If Redpill calls me a Filco Fanboi I'm reporting him.

I would call you an Apple Fanboi if that first picture was yours (iPod connector in the background)

I just felt like saying my Filco w/ Cherry MX Reds has the slightly curved front edge and off center Windows key. Wabi-sabi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wabi-sabi).

Off center keys/frame doesnt bother me, but it does indicate Filco does not care enough to fix a defect in the mold before they mass produce their keyboards. Which tells me there must be higher quality modern keyboards out there.

Maybe if they manufactured their boards in Japan they would have the right to charge the prices they do, but seems to me they make them exactly the same way (probably in the same factory) as the Chinese clones, except that they charge $30 more for their brand.

Just like how German automobile makers charge 50-300% more on their cars, even though they are not more reliable and usually much worse equiped than American/Japanese cars, and people still buy them for the logo.
