Title: Question abt brown and red switch.
Post by: a1san on Fri, 21 October 2011, 17:07:41
Hello there guys? how are you? (i hope and wish fine)

So , i had a crazy idea that wil cost abt 4 switches.

I have abt 10 spare cherry mx brown switches.
I was wondering if i open their caps and somehow i will remove the crosspoint(the inner iron-gold contact) i will have the feelings of the cherry mx reds right?
i mean the brown are  tactile cause they come in contact with the crosspoint, right?
So if i remove it and take it out ,the result will be a mx cherry red switch that will not be used as it will be destroyed ofc.
from the spring side red and browns they share the same sping, yes?

I want to stick them on a pcb and send them to a friend to check them before ordering a board with reds.

So what do you thing?

Look at the wiki. The browns are tactile because of the stem plastic itself. The actual crosspoint contacts on all Cherry MX switches are the same.

No crosspoint means no switch.

Thanks for the reply,apreciated!

I did check the wiki. The problem is that i dont own any red switches in order to make a test example to send them for sample...

The only switches i have are 10 mx brown switches.
I dont have a red plastic stem.

So if i open the cap of the brown switch, remove the crosspoint contact , and recap it ,then the brown stem will not have any contacts so it will be linear right? (though destroyed switch also)

So if my calculations are correct i will have a linear red switch just for sample .

If you take the crosspoint out you will have a plastic plunger in a plastic housing and no switch.  It should FEEL like a red switch though.

Thank you all i wanted to know!
i dont want a working switch , i just want to send him to try the red switches(modified browns) over his blue switches.
He wants to buy the Majestouch R 104 (cherry reds) and as the price is kinda high he asked me if i could send him a sample just for the feeling.

Thanks a lot all of you!

Alternatively, you should be able to shave off the bump on the brown switch. I would recommend this instead.

I think it's called ghetto red or something.

the most common way to do this is brown spring + black stem = ghetto red
but the way you described it should work too. Of course it won't be a working switch, but it should feel more or less like a red.
