Title: Poker KBC General thoughts + Slight issue.
Post by: Shuki on Mon, 31 October 2011, 00:36:49
Ordered one of these recently, wanted to try out a minimal layout board as well as cherry blues.. I must say I'm pretty impressed by both. I think cherry blues are my favourite switch of the ones I have tried. Blacks, reds, brown and topre are all nice switches but I feel the feedback on the blues is more suited to me. Plus they sound great while typing. I got the PBT keycaps, which I must say are a lot better than the filco keycaps as they have a slight texture on the top. My filcos keycaps always seemed to get shiny and slick quickly and they irritated my fingers. When I got the Topre I found it hard to switch between boards because the keycaps on it were so superior, but the ones on the KBC are pretty decent.

The only real gripe with this keyboard is the fact that ` and Esc share a key. As I play a lot of games in which ` is the console key by default and escape is pretty esential in general usage. Having only the ability to use one without having to change function seems to be quite irritating. I was thinking of possible solutions, I think the left windows key can be remapped to a secondary function key with the dip switches, however I kind of use the windows key frequently when tabbing in and out of games and the right windows key will sometimes be set to arrow keys. I was considering remapping a random key to escape as well but that also seems less than ideal. Anyone any suggestions?

I map the Menu key to ` and ~ since I don't need Menu anyway (Linux user) although even in Windows, Menu can be substituted by Ctrl-Esc if I'm not mistaken.

Anyway, you can find a discussion relevant to this subject here:

Is the menu key the key next to the right windows key?

Thanks for the link, didn't see it before (not that I didn't search or anything :p ).

Hmm perhaps the best solution for me would be using the dip switch to change the left windows key to fn and then just use space + fn on the occasions I would want to use the windows key.

All fn+space will do is activate the up-down-left-right arrows isn't it?

In this case deactivate it so that I am able to use the windows key as the right-windows key has been remapped.

Ahh, I get you now. Sorry I have the same setup with only one windows key but I don't have my arrows locked.

Shuki:  Nobody really needs the CAPSLOCK key...just remap that to be your `/~
I generally just disable that one since I hate accidentally turning it on.

Speak for yourself, homie.  My Caps Lock gets well exercised.
