The best RPG series of all time, no doubt. If you ever wished you could do ANYTHING you wanted in a game, no matter how far off story it went, then this is the game for you.
If you liked the freedom the GTA series gives you, this gives 100x as much. You can be a good guy or a bad guy. If you have never tried an Elder scrolls game, and you like RPG's, get on this, you will be amazed! Will be available at Walmart, Bestbuy, Gamestop, Amazon, and other stores.
Heres the official site: http://www.elderscrolls.com/
I can't wait

Just got it. About to play
-
I just recently installed Morrowind, and just downloaded a 1.1GB graphics and sound overhaul that make it on par with Oblivion and actually better in some instances. I loved Morrowind, so I can't way to replay it. I'll probably get Skyrim whenever it goes on sale next year.

Downloading... k'ed

-_- My stupid buzzing/freezing computer problem from over a year ago decided to start up again. It pretty much makes playing unbearable. Every second or so, my video freezes for a second and the audio buzzes. Anyone know of a solution? The internet isn't helping much on this one.

they didn't optimize it for PC at all. i'm so tired of all these bull**** console ports. the menu interface is SO ****ING BAD i wanna slap someone at bethesda. the menus are all designed with a controller in mind. hey guys! i have a MOUSE! is it that hard to have 1 or 2 guys dedicated to making a different PC gui that works well and is intuitive?
and here's a good one too...if you rebind the default keys (I use ESDF for movement) the menus still REQUIRE WASD. what a joke.
i also downloaded the game illegally. until Bethesda stops suing Mojang (Minecraft) because they think they own the rights to the word "Scrolls" i'm not giving them a dime.
/endrant
all that being said, the gameplay itself seems awesome. been playing it since yesterday and it's more immersive than the other elder scrolls games to say the least, once I got past it's massive shortcomings that is.
-
And I thought Oblivion's interface was bad...
I had the audio bug too. Where there is a lot of static. Setting it to 16bit for the audio device fixed it for me.

you've done the the standard stuff? driver cleaner and then newest video drivers? audio driver?

There seems to be a solution for the audio problem. If i remember right, set you audio to 24bit 44kHz
Not sure about the video issue.

Did they fix the terrible combat system from Oblivion? I found the game unplayable because of it. Seriously, Dark Messiah of Might and Magic was a knockoff game, and it had a far better combat system. Oblivion always made me feel like I wasn't actually in the game, essentially countering anything the developers did to promote immersion.
-

.
A tragic incident of a ESDF royalist. Lol, but ya, they could have been more careful and thoughtful...
It is sad that PC is no longer the major gaming platform of choice... but they, at least Skyrim looks better on PC...
One thing bugs me more about Skyrim is the core engine of the game. I believe it is supposed to be an improved (mainly graphics) version over the previous generation. I can still see quite a few quirky elements/flaws that are past down from the engine used by Oblivion/Fallout3
-
The mouse is movement at least on the menu screen is pretty bad but thus far the game is awesome, and I've only just made my character :p

I thought that this is settled long time ago?!
And I actually hoped that they would have accepted the terms Notch proposed - to settled it by a game of quake.
On topic of skyrim: I can't believe bf3 and skyrim got released at the same time. I don't have time for both games.
The overkill would have been that guild wars 2 would have come out as well. :-P
And ripster: saying 'pc gaming is dead' more often doesn't make it correct. Every even remotely competitive game is played on a PC. There is a reason why there are practically no console-game-tournaments. Whenever you want a more in depth experience, a PC is needed and used.

It is not what it once was though. Outside of MMOs and RTSs, everything is pushed by consoles and when devs spend NO time making the PC versions acceptable, it worsens the problem. I'd probably rather prefer to play Skyrim on my xbox, even though the graphics are worse.

Its because you don't have to worry about messing with drivers, and support for all the different pc hardware if you dev for consoles.
-
I finally finished Witcher 2 this afternoon and will be picking up Skyrim tomorrow. There's .ini tweaks to fix video issues and enable DX9 features that had been left out of the options screen. I'll be updating to Nvidia's beta driver too so I can use my SLI setup with Skyrim.
-
I ended up just reinstalling windows and it works fine. I just got finished with a 14 hour marathon of skyrim with some friends.

sadly i agree with you...
the development for PC got worse and worse over the last few years.
BUT there is light at the end of the tunnel. look eg. at BF3 - by far not the perfect game but the PC version is quiet a bit better than the console one. Dice (mostly) listened to the call of PC gamers. And i am confident that they will continually improve the game and maybe (read: hopefully) release mod tools.
I strongly believe that the PC-gaming community is still strong enough to make the publishers (no need to convince the developers) consider PC gaming more again. This will not happen for your average casual game like *insertsome****tytitelhere* but proper games will have to be developed independently if a long term success is wanted.
Look at MW3. After the fail of Black Ops, this is just another horrible try to suck a bit more money out of the series. You'll see that (at least the PC section) will loose sales over the next installments and then the publisher has two choices: Either drop the series (at least on PC) or restart it with a proper game. The state of MW3 on PC is an absolute catastrophe and will not survive for long.
But to come back to the original topic: PC gaming is still going strong even though consumers have realized that consoles have sometimes benefits over PC BUT (and this is an important thing:) not always. Now the publishers/developers have to find the balance themselves and in a few years nobody will talk about the PC-console war anymore but let them coexist as it should be.
-
Alright, that's enough.... now I have to get it today... for the PS3 though.
-
Woooah, there's still no reason to get skyrim on consoles if you have a pc that can play it. The menus are very console esque, but that's what mods are for. In a few weeks/months you'll be able to download any interface changes you want to make the experience better for you. Not sure why anyone talks the pc version down because bethesda is forced to focus more on console gamers (selling a lot more there than on PC)
-
Pffft, paying for games...
-
About my buzzing problem, it didn't have to do with the audio. The entire computer would stall up for a second, all my searching on the internet brought up people constantly telling me to update my drivers. I should have made a video, because clearly no one on the internet knows what is going on
-
PC gaming will always > console gaming, its only a matter of time. Correct me if I am wrong, but how exactly are these console games created?? PCs I would assume???
-
Bethesda is one of the last good gaming companies, please support them and don't pirate this game. They put so much more effort into their games than the big studios that are just pumping out crap for money (MW3). Companies that care about making a good product (rather than ONLY making money like EA and Vivendi) deserve respect/support.
This game has way too many controls to use on a controller efficiently. Ripster, I am sure you own a good computer (probably top of the line knowing you), why the **** would you prefer to play games on a console? That 800x600 resolution doesn't bother you? You are a keyboard fantatic and yet prefer to use primitive sticks to a keyboard?
-
The menu interface was obviously designed with a controller in mind. They really dropped the ball there.

Like I said earlier, I'm not buying it because of what Bethesda has pulled with Mojang. I understand it's probably their lawyers, but they represent their company as a whole. It's not a publicly owned company. They could just drop it if they want. It's just another example of the big guy picking on the little guy. I still believe Bethesda to be one of the best developers left. Up there with Blizzard and Valve in my book. Once Bethesda realizes they are wrong I will buy it.
As for the controller argument, I think the game is fine on one. Controls were fine on Oblivion as well. And when you are 15 feet back in your chair, graphics make much less of a difference. For some games I just like to sit on my ass and veg. Plus my huge theater system is hooked up to my xbox and my PC is not. I'm still playing it on the PC though.
-
I am already hooked.

*middle finger* to Biniaris for using a retarded ass excuse to pirate a game.. contribute to the death of PC gaming dude..

Sadly ripster is unable to admit that he is wrong. Same as in the mechancial discussion.
Either he ignores good arguments (like yours) or he starts insulting people (like he did to me or some others).
He is simply an stubborn, elitist jerk who can't accept any other opinion than his constructed 'truth'.
If he says that PC gaming is dead, it MUST be true!

I'm going to wait until a GOTY edition, I hate completing or half finishing a game only for a bunch of DLCs to come out. The fact it messes up the gaming experience is more annoying to me than the cynical nickel and diming. Should also have any bugs ironed out by then also and probably be on sale on Steam. I still doubt they'll ever make an Elder Scrolls as good as Morrowind again.

This is where I'm coming from, except for the bit about Morrowind. I never had time to get much farther than character creation in Morrowind, so I can't say it's the best. However, knowing a GotY edition is imminent, I'm tempted to wait. Though I may end up with a copy by then thanks to my birthday and Christmas.
-
Maybe I'm looking back through rose-tinted glasses but Morrowind seemed to have a much more varied and interesting game world than Oblivion, and seemingly Skyrim from what I've seen so far. Obviously the games have improved in other ways, but they lack the sort of fantastical feeling you got from traversing around Vvardenfell.

Poor old ripster.

I definitely agree that there was some type of magic in the Morrowind that I really didn't feel in Oblivion.
-
And now in turn I kinda miss Oblivion's Imperial City in Skyrim.
-
I still can't believe they didn't make fallout and this with some sort of multiplayer.
-
I definitely agree that there was some type of magic in the Morrowind that I really didn't feel in Oblivion.
Things have certainly been changed for the better or worse. Gamer nowadays can't take much of the game complexity existed 10 20 years go. Elder scroll would have been profitable to be around if they keep the same complexity and exclude the newer demographics of gamers (younger gamers).

As I grow older, I certainly started to appreciate the stream lining they are doing, especially the character developments. Exploring and questing alone already take enough time, I don't want to be troubled by too much of other complex details. There are more things in life I have to be worried about other than just gaming.

As someone that put maybe 500 hours into Morrowind and about 40 into Oblivion, I can tell you Skyrim is not a cock up in the way Oblivion was. I'm not sure I'm ready to say it is better than Morrowind since I'm only 30 hours into Skyrim, but Skyrim is a ****ing amazingly designed environment. The dungeons in particular own the **** out of any TES game that's come before it, and they've finally taken an axe to their turgid **** excuse for a leveling system. It's also probably the first TES to actually do difficulty scaling correctly, and playing on the hardest setting is still entertaining even though you will routinely get your **** kicked in. It's probably the most dangerous exploration has ever felt in this series. Oh, and it not only has the best soundtrack of any TES, but one of the best video game soundtracks period. Maybe just flat out the best.
It's not all roses or anything; even though this is probably their most stable initial release it still comes with some of the usual jank and occasional broken script. The melee combat didn't get as much of an improvement as the magic did (seriously Skyrim's new magic system ****ing owns compared to past TES games), and the crafting is kind of hit or miss. But I think for someone that loved Morrowind, these things can't be items that stand in your way of appreciating what is behind that stuff.

Level 20 Wood Elf named Vieral reporting in, I'm relying heavily on Sneak/Archery and playing on computer. The game is pretty buggy, my PC isn't the best by any means but that doesn't account for the mid-flight frozen dragons, flying horses, or general people flying all over the place.
-
i beat skyrim in 20hrs or so lvl 15 high elf dual casting fire (level 1 spell) all throughout, yea i almost didn't complete any of the other quests, i didn't complete the mage/theif or warrior sections (did that after i did the end boss, no spoilers). But yea sounds stupid, but i always kept on using either level 1 fire or level 1 ice (depending on when i upgraded to fire or ice pet, cuz they resist the same element and you don't risk killing them) reason? cuz your hours carl lyda dies from aoe (area of effect) damage spells which are like almost everything upgraded, so i just ran it there and double casted fire or ice. Then later i completed the college quests and the rewards are awesome! i kinda restarted a new character, to be more battle mage, you can have summon sword on one hand and when you summon it, it ups conjouration, and when you swing, there goes your 1h skill, i didn't have more time to play with it though.

That's just part of Bethesda tradition. :D Bugs will eventually be fixed by Bethesda's patch or fan mods. No biggy

i did the 360 version, the rumble is awesome (idk if dragons rumble above your head, i'll be sure to remember next time) but lockpicking is great with the rumble, i never put any points into lockpicking or bought any and the rumble just told me which way was wrong and which way was correct.
of course if you have the 360 version you have to install the game to your hard drive, it's impossible to play loading from dvd, just from dashboard press "y" and it installs a copy to your hd, you still need the disc to verify of course.
-
dragons do rumble above your head... rumble is awesome.
-
Thank you for mentioning that.
I'll get the PS3 version.
My wife and I are both enjoying the PS3 version. We encountered 1-2 graphics bugs but otherwise it's quite enjoyable. It actually makes a more mature (software wise) impression than Oblivion.
Seriously, we enjoy that we can sit on the couch and can comfortably play "together", that is one is playing their story and the other is watching. The only thing that I miss in the console version is the ability to take screenshots.
-
Plus it sounds like the dragons rumbling my two subwoofers will be awesome.

latest pc vs console skyrim version i can find is in german, but videos tell all, seems the same to me. The best experience I had was playing skyrim on my projector, freaking big dragon coming down on you with volume up and rumble on, actually pretty intense. Oh dragon slaying is the funnest part.

The PC screens I have seen, at least on high have looked significantly better than consoles. What's sad is games like this are very limited by old console hardware now. BF3 is a good example.

How is bf3 limited to old consoles. the pc version has 64 people servers also the graphics are a lot better. It wasn't a console port as much as skyrim is.

If it save you some bucks from upgrading the PC (can easily go beyond the cost of consoles) I don't see it as an issue but a plus.
-
I'm about 28 hours in and I've run into a few bugs. A major one was that my archery skill was permanently debuffed 20 points, but this was an easy console command fix.
I'm not too sure about all this complaining with the graphics, I think the game looks great, with a few textures a little bland. But that's easily fixable with a texture mod, which is up for a good amount of the trees in the game.
-

I meant the opposite in that BF3 is so much better on the PC. The consoles have no advantage.
Console hardware is old so newer games are starting to show how old the hardware really is.

In a vaccuum, PC is probably the best, but if you need to upgrade a ton JUST for skyrim, maybe not. The interface for sure needs help.

The interface is certainly not the best for pc... but I eventually got used to it..(but if u are talking about ESDF remap issue then ya it sucks) I guess it is because I have had worse. I played FFXI for a while and boy! that was some real joystick friendly interface I had to deal with. lol
-
i did 100 blacksmithing... didn't even think about doing it until i saw the end 100skill was dragonbone armor, 75 levels of blacksmithing also levels you up up like 10 regular levels heh, if anyone wants spoilers i'll say how i did it, took 4hours?anyway dragonbone armor isn't that great armor wise compared to just steel (both refined to legendary) but my last character had like 50 dragonbones i wanted to do something with it, for the newest character.

Must suck playing Skryim with no cheats :(
I don't find Skyrim fun at all to be honest, I only enjoyed Morrowind from the series, Oblivion was bad.

I haven't tried Skyrim but sounds consolized. I hope it's not the case on PC or that it will be corrected with patches and by mods from the community.
All I can say is that Morrowind was Excellent and Oblivion sucks ass.

I don't think it has that much. I actually like the inventory, you can access everything without using the mouse. And this is starting to sound like the whole PING issue.... At least now they use words to distinguish between sections of your inventory, not those damn pictures and tabs in oblivion.
-
Here's a nice picture that sums up some of the issues with the UI and what could be done to alleviate some of the issues. http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/5679/skyriminterface.jpg

lol, very true.

You are crazy
You can't blame a person who played hardcore on Morrowind ended up not liking Oblivion nor Skyrim. I am just glad that there can still be RPG that I can enjoy with its visual and content.
-

I think the UI works quite well for joystick control as it is (not without flaw of course) and is actually an improvement over Oblivion (which was also designed with console in mind). I find things a lot easier to navigate in skyrim over the oblivion (I am on PC). Text based inventory sure is not the best way to do it, but from a person who played quite a bit of J RPGs, I find myself adjusting to it fairly quickly.
Just wait for the mods to make things better for you.
IMO, Bethesda made the right move by streamlining the UI and dumb down a lot of character development process. It makes the game a lot more accessible for younger gen (those who are more used to things like GTA and FPS) or new comer of the series from older gen gamers who no longer have the time to get all hyped up by all the "depth" and the "sophistication" games used to have. Bethesda's got an army of game developer to feed. So be it if thats what it take to keep up the series and the genre of RPG.
Overall, i am just glad that it is still released on PC.
-
How hard it is to give one or two devs a job: "Make nice mouse and keyboard based UI for PC ok?" and then allow people to choose between one for PC and one for consoles. It can't cost more that much...
-

It might be much, or they might be lazy, or they could assume since it works well on console, it should work fine on PC as well. I think it DOES work fine on PC albeit not being most efficient UI for PC. I am sure it is not a deal breaker for any of us playing the game on PC, especially when there are fan mods that will be available in the future.
-
i remember ffxiv getting the same flack for basically porting over console control to the PC, console is very limiting. It's why i don't play archer on skyrim on the 360, drawing a bow, aiming then firing is too clunky on the controller.

I think the shelf space for the PS3 version alone eclipsed the entire PC SW shelf space.
That's because everyone uses Steam for PC games, not retail stores.
Ahem..................
Source (http://www.vgchartz.com/article/88459/skyrim-sales-exceed-34-million-units-in-two-days/)
That's because everyone uses Steam for PC games, not retail stores.
2011 is fast becoming the year games debuted at incredible numbers, as The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim sells over 3.4 million copies at retail (not including digital sales) in its first 2 days on sale.
So you can at least double the PC figure, which means it probably outsold the PS3 version (your console of choice right?), hilarious, ha ha.

2 to 1, eh? Hardly the death knell of PC gaming really, is it? Especially considering the PC share of multi-platform sales has risen comparatively to console ones over the last few years. Clutching at straws.

It's the future of all gaming, consoles are just behind the curve (like your viewpoints on gaming in general, ha ha). I've said this in the PC vs Consoles thread in your subforum already. I don't like it, but I don't confuse what I want to be reality with what's actually happening (like you seem to be doing). Look at Wii and DS sales vs 360/PS3, or the amount of Angry Birds knockoffs trying to imitate its success. It's obvious where the largest sector of the gaming market is headed.
-
Basically to use ripster logic: MGS4 has had about 5 million sales, Angry Birds has had about 500 million - ergo console gaming is dead.
-
Like I said earlier, I'll get it when it's there's a GOTY edition. DLCs being released mid-game or after I've completed it ruins it for me. I played a bit at my friend's place earlier, it seemed alright.

I don't see how the success of angry birds as being anything that's ground breaking. Think games like Mario bro and Space Invaders. Those "casual" game studios like Rovio are not reinventing the wheel of gaming but merely going back to the basics.
Look at LA Noir, the studio went bankrupt right after the game was released despite it being a success. That tells a lot about the modern days of "hardcore" game making

Never said it was.

Sellotape the controller so you're running into a corner and leave it overnight?

Agree with this. I read something interesting a while back that asserted that the gaming market is splitting in three. You have the "new" breed of casual games that have a lot in common with old arcade games. The main innovation here is integration with social platforms. Then you have "interactive movies" which is where the expensive, graphically intense, story-driven FPS games are headed. The third category is competitive games like Starcraft and Street Fighter 4.

so like if you do conjuration you can summon pets, i haven't seen any "master" spells yet i've only seen expert there's an expert spell called summon demora lord, or something, and it's basically a demon with a 2hander that has fire damage, this guy is awesome lol he says stuff like "i'll honor my lord by killing you" stuff like that, i'm like 5 away from 100 conjuration which will let me summon 2x pets, which brings up an issue i have.
i have the dog companion and my constant house carl lydia, why don't i see their hp? every modern game that has "followers" or "companions" show their hp meter, i mean i constantly have to look around for my dumb lydia and make sure she isn't on the ground kneeling and dying, which is often (and doesn't make sense cuz i have 100smithing and i gave her a full set of dragon armor). Truthfully i wouldn't even want a follower cuz they are annoying, she's just a good "pack mule" you know to carry loot. I'd also like to see hp of my pet's, i mean i don't know if my pets die or they're alive, i have to listen for them speaking and go "oh i don't have to recast", cuz i'm at the point now where i just enter a dungeon, literally run through it and my pets/companions will just kill everything and i don't have to lift a finger.
I mean it's true the interface even if it is made for the console is wholefully horrible.

Given how bad the companion AI is, I never bothered with them. That being said, Shadowmare is probably the best pet/horse u can get. It never dies and would fight alongside with you to death (did I just say it never dies?). Killed a couple of dragons with ease when the dragon would just try to kill shadowmare without giving a crap about me.
Nevertheless, I deleted the game. It is too life draining :(

DO NOT CHEAT! Once you go down that path there is no turning back. When I found out you could just edit everything in Morrowind through the console, it ruined the game for me. After weeks of amazing gameplay it took one hour of cheating to bore me into never playing the game again.
Voice powers are so badass. I like going into shops and just blasting everything off the shelves. I can see how rumble would make the game more enjoyable.

goto the college and talk to the bald guy, if you can't find him he's on the first floor of the hall of C. (contenance?) find him there, if he isn't there, skip to like 12am or sleeping time, and he'll be asleep in bed, lol wake him up (this is what i do for wandering NPC's find their bed and time skip to them sleeping), there's a last option, train me more or something, you do a mini quest and you get lvl 100 spell, well it's not level 100 just that it costs 437 mana and unless you dump tons of leveling into magicka, you need the level 100 perk 50% less master spells. It's a permanent flame chick, and since you're level 100, you can have 2.
she's not as powerful as the demora lord, and not as cool, but you never have to summon a pet unless you die, or you get totally owned and i think the master pet cannot be turned against you. I tested this out against the powerful mask guy at shearpoint and my master fire pets were still loyal to me after he died, but the 2 demora lords turned on me.
anyone thinks it's funny they have an orc (usually in fantasy the dumbest race) as the librarian? and
spoiler.

I wouldn't buy console version of Bethesda games. You need the game console a lot to fix bugginess of certain quests. I'd go as far as far as calling Bethesda as inept in programming and scripting. IMO it's the user mods/fixes that make Bethesda games great. I've made alot of mods and junk for the ES series/Fallout3 over the past 8-9 years. I am still using the nick I created for modding Fallout3 (been banned from the nexus many times).

When you make a game THAT enormous and flush with content there is just no way to find every little thing that can go wrong. I would rather have the game released than wait another year so testers can try and find as many bugs as possible (there still would be bugs left because there is just too many possibilities, which is why the games are great). If they were small scale games like any other, it would be easy to spot bugs.
