Title: Recommend me a mouse for OS X?
Post by: elbowglue on Fri, 11 November 2011, 18:47:52
Quick question:
My buddy uses Mac, I want to recommend him a mouse (he currently uses a trackball) - for general use, gaming (SC2 through Mac OS).

I myself really like the Logitech G400/Mx518, however I understand there are issues with these mice with Mac OS.

Can someone recommend a mouse that works well under OS X, that tracks in a respectable manner such as the MX518?  Or is there a way to get the MX518 to work in a respectable manner under OS X? Prediction is not of concern to me.

I also plan on advising him to run Bumblebee's mouse fix thing here:

Oh last question is, suppose I got him a MX518, could I use steermouse http://plentycom.jp/en/steermouse/support.cfm and Bumblebee's mouse fix at the same time, so one could adjust sensativity via steermouse mouse driver and prevent acceleration via Bumblebee's mouse fix..

Thanks ya'll.

Huh? I don't know of any Logitech mice that have issues with OS X, especially on the mid-end models like the G400/MX518. You don't even need to install the drivers, just plug it in and go... all buttons will be recognized and sensitivity adjustments work fine. I've used Logitech mice/trackballs with Macs for almost a decade now without a single problem. USB mice are nearly universal these days and only a handful exhibit problems with OS X.

The only "problem" I've heard people speak of is Mac OS X's mouse acceleration curve, which is independent of the mouse being used. I say "problem" because I bounce between Mac OS and Windows constantly and can't tell a difference... they feel identical to me, so that "problem" is subjective at best and if your friend has been using Macs for any amount of time at all, he's probably accustomed to the curve.

Hmm.  That's useful info iindigo, so if I plug in the g400 or mx518 you can still do on the fly DPI switching with the up and down sensativity mouse buttons on the Mac?  So theoretically I could get him a G400, plug and play with it, run the Bumblebee mouse fix to prevent mouse acceleration in game and then it should work?

Forward / Back buttons and scroll mouse should work eh?  Thanks again

DPI switching, at least on mice I've tried, takes place entirely on the mouse. That's how it was with the G500 I used for a couple weeks. I never installed any drivers.

All the buttons on my Logitech Marble Mouse show up and are usable in games. Not sure about the extra buttons the G400 and G500 offer, but the back/forward buttons on the G500 worked fine for me.
