Title: Loaner Boards?
Post by: bienc on Sat, 12 November 2011, 18:26:46
Hello everyone! First off, I'd just like to say that this community is amazing and that I've learned a TON from lurking around here and looking through the newbie guide.

So on to my question. I have been researching computer parts for about a couple of weeks now and I plan on building a new computer in about 4-6 months (long story) and since my old computer is run down and the keyboard is basically dead, I was in search for a good keyboard mouse combination.

I've read about mechanical boards in the past but now I'm getting serious about buying one for my computer in the future. I've narrowed it down to 2-3 options:

Das Keyboard
Leopold -- Leaning toward this
Unicomp SpaceSaver

My biggest problem is choosing between Cherry MX Blues or Browns -- and the buckling springs. I've seen and heard all the clips on Youtube and here for each type, but what concerns me is the feel of them. I heard that this forum has a board with many switch types that gets shipped around so people can try. Is that true? The Best Buys around here do not carry the Razer Blackwidow so trying at least Blues is a no go for me.

Thank you for your time!

well, just google mr interface and look for the sink lists.

But that will just show you browns and blues, not the m.

TBH, shipping the board to the next guy will be about $10.

A model m may well be $30-40 (tops) so, I think I'd just start there anyways.

Well the post that I found, it was a bag with the individual switches and it doesn't take much to ship around. I'll think about the Model M. Thanks!

Your Best Buy might not have the Razer Blackwidow but look on Razer's website and maybe contact their customer service department to see if they shipped to other computer stores in your area.

Also, you can do what I did with some success and place a couple ad's in the classified section and ask if someone wouldn't mind sending their keyboard so you can test with it; of course you'll need to pay all shipping/insurance costs and maybe a little extra for their trouble but it may save you endless nights of "what if."

It might also be good to get rid of the notion of "the perfect switch."  You might like to type on blues one day and browns the next.  Some days your hands may be aching and need a slightly different switch - or maybe for activities like chatting online you prefer something else.

If all you can own is one keyboard, it's best to spend a week or two with it before you make up your mind.

That's a great idea for the Blackwidow, I'll look into contacting them. And where can I find the classified section? Is it on this site or on Deskthority? Maybe I'm blind but I can't find it here =X. And I know there will never be "the perfect switch," I would just like to gauge my options and see what I'm more comfortable with. I'd love to try out lender keyboards but don't know if I'm able to do the insurance and shipping costs right now. The switch bag is a "better" option for me right now. Thank you so much for the suggestions, I will see if I can follow up on them.

I just posted a switch tester numpad thread here (http://geekhack.org/showthread.php?23914-Cherry-Switch-Tester-Holiday-Tour-2011!).  It has browns and blues, among other things.

Thank you for the headsup! Looks like I'm late to the party. I have been added to Mr. Interface's list for a bag with all the switches. I will see if I can get on the second run of your list in the future.
