Has it been done before?
Eh? You mean including a Topre switch with a Cherry tester?
I'm interested. This thing could fit in a small flat rate box, couldn't it?
Finally I may have a chance to try out clears, ergo clears and browns all at the same time.
I am one hundred percent interested, add me to the list.
wait, so you said you wanted to keep the first run within the continental US, but your list includes international.
Is the list just an interest check or...?
The Rainbow pad.
I can give my P.O. box to you privately to ship to, also do you know what the shipping costs would look like?
This seems pretty awesome seeing as I am looking at buying a new keyboard soon, and I cant put in a final word on the cheery MX caps until I have actually tried them.

Added you. You're in the US right?
Been lurking for a long time now and really want to purchase a mechanical... Is there a post requirement for this? If not, I would like to join :)This name is great. I love puns.
I live in Los Angeles.
Name suggestion: The CherryPicker
I'm in too. My location is South Florida. For a name how about cherry popper?
I knew someone would suggest this.
It'd also be cool to have different keycaps for people to try: Filco coated, regular ABS, PBT, Double shots, Dye Sub, etc.

Oh I'm located in Phiadelphia PA ;)No. Way.
No. Way.take his HHKB and send it to me!!!
take his HHKB and send it to me!!!Well, depending on where in Philly he lives, I might just ask him to leave it to me in his will in the event he gets shot...
Thumbs up to hasbaz for providing this service to the community :thumb: this will defintely help people feel the differences between switches.
I wish I could rep you...
Well, depending on where in Philly he lives, I might just ask him to leave it to me in his will in the event he gets shot...that sounds faster
I'm interested in a later tour, if/when openings are available.
I'm in Philadelphia, PA.
I can probably get a Canadian tour going later after this first one. I go to Vancouver from time to time. I can mail it out when I am up there. I also have an address in Canada that the numpad can eventually get back to at the end of the trip.
I might have missed it. Is there any requirement for mailing the numpad like tracking number and minumum level of shipping method (priority mail?)? Just want to make sure we don't lose our numpads.
Hi hashbaz,
Do you still have a slot for a newbie? I would like to join this test. Thanks a lot!
lol let's make a 3v3 or 4v4 team! i'm terrible too so we can lose together? terran, 2v2 random plat, 3v3 diamond (friend is masters). mainly just play monobattles (random race/unit) with my wife now...
You play with your wife? Lucky man. Mine just recently acknowledged that following Starcraft is no weirder than following professional sports.haha yea people tell me i'm lucky.. and i agree! she's korean, so it's in her blood to play i guess
How much time do each person has before sending it off to the next person on the list? 3 days? A week?
I would like people to submit iTrader feedback for the person sending the tester to you, respond to iTrader feedback that other people submit for you, and to the tester owner :-). There is no money involved, but trust will be built. It would be good to have that on record, especially for new forum members with no or low number of iTrader feedback.
Sounds good?
I would like to add Cherry Bomb to the list for names....Am I allowed to have multiple suggestions?
Also : some more inside news from Europe -> ceesa and I are working on a bigger actual working tester board with functional cherry AND alps switches! :-)
This is just the sort of thing a n00b needs to check out the feel of keys, There are 2 spots open, correct? (11/13)
I would be thrilled to be a part of this.

That's a second tester? The switches and keycaps are different.

I want in. I live in the Atlanta, Georgia area.
What else do I have to do?
This is how my numpad is packed. Please save and reuse packaging when you ship the tester to the next person. The packaging makes it very easy to pack and ship, and the ensure safety of the tester :-)
1. numpad tester, small bubble bag, large bubble bag.
2. put numpad tester inside the small bubble bag.
3. put small bubble bag into large bubble bag
4. put large bubble bag into ziplock bag
5. put ziplock bag inside USPS priority mail box.
6. Close the USPS priority mail box.
7. mail it at your USPS office. Must add delivery confirmation, AKA tracking.
I am damn serious about protection. I am leading by example. This is a triple-condom design!
Well, actually I just wanted a simple way for people to pack the tester for shipment safely and easily.

Sorry, the OP was a little stale. The first round is in progress, I'm afraid. I'll put you down for future rounds though.

Just a quick question hashbaz, are you going to PM each of us the address we are to mail the pad to once we acquire it?
Lol I wouldn't have much to contribute besides "Logitech sucks" (what I currently use). Although if demik/Skoobs is close enough I wouldn't mind just handing the keyboard off. I live in west LA near UCLA (go Bruins :]).

would be sweet to do a mini meet, or even just save on shipping. i live between thousand oaks and LA, not sure if that would be too far for one of us to drive, or meet in the middle. i have a das ultimate with browns, but the browns have both the Elite keyboards firm soft landing pads and orings on them. it totally changes the feel. not sure if either of you guys would be interested in trying it out. also have a blackwidow that i am in the process of selling (have two people interested) so not sure if it will still be here when the time comes.
camarillo is further north of thousand oaks.
sounds like he lives in the west hills area.
im closer to you falerus (if we meet up somewhere in west LA/beverly hills)

sounds good, we can go half on the price to mail it to skoobz (unless he's willing to drive all the way down to LA, which i doubt lol) and it'll save us on shipping.
either way, when the time comes up we'll discuss it more if you want.
now i just need to find a place to take a picture of it. im thinking of making this old dude that dresses like spiderman on hollywood hold it while i snap a pic
Hey, that's my area. =P Let me know when and I might join (if my work schedule permits lol).
u can bring your HHKB so i can finally decide if i want one or not lol

So ... beautiful
Althought normally I like white keyboards better. HHKB looks its best all black (with printed letters) IMO.

Looking sharp reaper, i like the colour-way of the entire keyboard ;D
This looks perfect
i wish the modifiers were more grey than blue.. throws it off for me... unless they look different up close
I'd like to be added to the list! (waiting list I think it's too late For this round)

If we meet up, it'll probably be in west LA/beverly hills. I'm thinking maybe a mall with a USPS (century city or westside pavilion) for maximum efficiency. Let us know if you're around that area!
that would be an hour drive for me, WITHOUT traffic.
we should get everyone talking that lives in this area though and have a full blown meet. would be legit. imagine getting to see, in person, leopold, das, and every other kind of keyboard we have amassed.
I've been thinking about doing this for Bay Area geekhackers as well.

I just got back from school, and found the pad sitting on my kitchen table. After drumming my fingers on it for a while, I've grown to like clears and reds. I don't actually like ergo clears as much as I thought I would, but it makes me think I would like a board of greens. I like the click of the blues, but the force of the blacks. Also, a couple keys are pingy, so anyone who hasn't been exposed to that will be able to experience it firsthand! I'll add a fun picture to this post when I take one! Luckily, I have the longest span of time to do so, since I got it on a Friday!
Looks like the keyboard has arrived at Quarzac's place!

XD I completely overlooked your post.I bought it for my friend, but he lost interest. Browns are like subtle blues, in my opinion. They basically tone down blues. Less noise, less tactility. Definitely more gaming-friendly, but I love the sound of blues too much to change over to it. Feel free to buy it sooner. I'm trying to get it out of my hair before Black Friday.
I see you are selling a mx brown filco, any reason you are not keeping the keyboard? I was wondering how it compares to the blues in your opinion. Also if it turns out that I like the browns when the keypad arrives at my place, I would be very interested in buying the filco from you.
As for my picture:

A bit of a cop-out? Maybe. The girl in the picture asked me to go with her to get a tattoo, and we were supposed to go somewhere fun to take pictures with the numpad afterwards, but the evening was cut short, so I did the best I could.
should have made the tattoo artist hold the tester! The tattoo artist was much less interesting than her. Plus, I left it in the car.
You should take a picture of the tester with the new tattoo :smokin:The tattoo was kind of bleedy. Did not want to risk blood on the tester. That probably violates some sort of rule.
just out of curiosity, what was the tattoo of?A yin yang symbol without the outer circle for the white part. And no white.
don't have to answer if you dont want to.
So the real question is when are you seeing tattoo girl again. The real question indeed. Though I'll see her at school on Monday, so... Monday?

Ok so you've shown her the numpad. Step two is to get her to pull doubleshots with you for your group buy. Once she sees the high-contrast legends and thick Cherry plastic she won't be able to resist you any longer.I couldn't help but laugh at that comment

:DI'll remember that. All I need now are some more nerdy keycaps. I don't know if she likes Portal. Though *****es love Portal.
Seriously though it could happen. Chicks dig geeks these days. Quarzac, just don't show her your Blackwidow or she might think you're a nub. ;)
Epic man, thanks for the pictures! I've been meaning to check this place out. Now I have to go if only to see all those sweet early keyboards.
There are some, but not many early keyboards in the museum. The reason is keyboards were not invented with computers - they existed long before the computers were ever born ;-)
Today I brought the tester here (http://www.computerhistory.org/) to visit the ancestors of nowadays computer :)
thanks again to both of you for doing this.
Is there anywhere i can buy one of these cherry samplers? Either a number pad like this or a full keyboard, idc. I would LOVE to have one of those
Sorry, I worded it incorrectly. I meant to ask if anyone would know of anyone or be willing to make one for me
Though honestly if you get a PCB-mounted numpad like this one (http://www.ebay.com/itm/USB-Mechanical-Switch-Business-Grade-Keypad-Numeric-Pad-/280516284309) it's not hard to do the switch mod yourself (no soldering required).
That's a Cherry switch numpad? For $15? Wow. Separately, the switches alone would cost more then that. Any idea what color switch they are?
I think ripster said they are blue. Could be wrong though.I should have guessed, there's something about numbers work that demands the click.
If you need switches, you can join the Phantom group buy. You can order just switches if you want. Click my signature to goto the Phantom group buy thread.Hey, you've got almost every color too. Which grey is that? The linear, or the tactile?
Hey, you've got almost every color too. Which grey is that? The linear, or the tactile?
Where do you live?
I answered RogueThunder's PM, but I will cover it here as well. The tester is electronically working. I just removed the cable to make more room for packing and shipping. I opened up the tester to unplug the cable from the PCB. The connector on the PCB is not a regular, mini, or micro USB connector. I don't what you mean by "tried plugging in the poor thing", but no cable would work if you didn't open up the tester's case, and please don't open it :-)I was figuring it used the ports on the side. Seen some odd numpads that do that. I now know those are a hub--with a horrible low power supply. (Was thinking it might be deisgned a bit like the old mac keyboards where you could connect it with either port and chain things in with the other)
Looking for Clear Stems I was hoping that since you made this you would have some extras.
Biniaris might have some clears still. I got mine from him.PMed him sadly hes cleaned out but I am getting new switch housings from him.
I believe I wrapped the bubble wrap around the long edges, leaving a bunch of extra at the top and bottom of the numpad, then rolled (not folded) the extra to form pads to keep it centered in the box.Yeah, once I calmed down and attacked it again, I got it. The trick was to assemble the box around the tester, whereas I usually assemble the box and then put things in it. Thanks. On a side note, I may have done some rough division on the back of the paper with the switch layout on it. I threw it in my desk drawer when I got it and didn't realize until it was too late that I wrote on it. Sorry about that. It's been a stressful week or so.
Ships with black. VERY cheap construction though. No stabilizers on large keys. A plate made of cardboard.
Any chance of getting a green switch on the East Coast board sometime? Those switches are kind of mysterious, would love to try one.
No problem, I figured the list was closed up once it shipped out. I was just wondering if you'd be adding a green switch to it, like the West Coast one has. It would be nice to try one of those sometime.
I'd be happy to add a green if I had one. I could add a linear and a tactile grey.I might be getting some green switches of PCBs that I am getting for the springs I dont need those so they will be left intact.
I love the recursion.Thank you :)
Good review, Tsangan. Now I'm not so sure about clears :o
I would like people to submit iTrader feedback for the person sending the tester to you, respond to iTrader feedback that other people submit for you, and to the tester owner :-). There is no money involved, but trust will be built. It would be good to have that on record, especially for new forum members with no or low number of iTrader feedback. To submit feedback, look for the person's name on this thread, click on the name, click "View Profile". On the profile page, click the "Feedback Score" tab on the top of the page. Then click the "Submit Feedback for ............" link to sumbit feedback. When you receive the numpad safely and on time, submit a positive feedback to the person who sent your the numpad and the numpad owner. When you receive a positive feedback after you sent the numpad out (you get a PM about that), return the favor by submitting a positive feedback back to the person who just sent you a positive feedback. If everything goes well, everyone should get 3 positive feedback submission. That you help build up your iTrader rep here for future transaction.
I have received the Lister's tester from RogueThunder! Very excited to finally see what all these switches feel like. I will play around with it and put up a review tonight/tomorrow night. My pictures will be kind of lame, the place I wanted to go to is not open after I get off of work on the weekdays (6PM), and seeing as I only have this for 3 days, I can't go on the weekend.
For those of you that are curious, I was going to try my best to top the vintage keyboards/computer pictures by bringing the tester to the Automobile Museum we have here in Reno. The car I had my eye on for the picture? 24K Gold Delorean, only 1 of 3 ever made. I'm more than a little disappointed that I could get that shot, so I'll try to come up with something.
Damn. That picture would almost be worth waiting til the weekend for...

Lunch break!
I was thinking this, but the Museum is about 10-15 minutes away from work, have to park and walk/find it, pay $10 to get in, then go back to work. I don't want to spend $10 for 2 minutes in an awesome museum. Maybe I'll go on the weekend anyway and snap a picture for you guys.
The Libretto really wishes the numpad could help it play that game of Angband better. XD
Man I wish i had seen this before I ordered my keyboard lol. Amazing idea to make one of these. I still probably wouldn't mind trying it out sometime down the road anyway.
I get my brown board later today anyway so I'll at least have an idea about one switch. But I'm sure it helps to have something to compare it to other than just my rubber dome.
Hooray for Angband! You have excellent gaming tastes. Thanks for the review also.^.^' Angband was one of my first games, right after Civilization 1 (another game that *really* required a numpad, as the mouse support was so-so.)
Should arrive at Reptile tomorrow.:-)
Okay Los Angeles folks, it's almost our turn! If there is interest for a meetup we should set one up.
Here's my list of people that are in LA (from what I could tell):
demik - has shown interest
reaper - has shown interest
Yzeets - hasn't mentioned wanting to meet up
Skoobs - most likely too far :(
If anybody is interested, just post a meeting place close to you that has free parking so we can get a feel of where everybody is located. Also mention when you're available. After one or two people respond, I'll PM the others to see if they're still interested, then we can figure out the meeting place that makes the most sense. I don't mind mailing out the package after the meetup.
My meeting place of choice: Westside Pavilion in West LA
Availability: Pretty much whenever since I work from home
This is an awesome idea! When will the first round end? I want to buy a keyboard sometime this month, preferably the next week. :/
I live outside of US, eastern Europe, by the way.
Also does anyone know the shipping prices? As I've seen hardware on Ebay that costs over $100 bucks to ship to here...
At the rate mine is going it'll be out another month or two at least. Litster's will be back sooner. Quite a few Canadians have shown interest so I think one of us will be doing a Canadian round next. You might get faster results with MrInterface's Switch Try Bag (http://deskthority.net/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=64), which I think is touring Europe. I'll put you on my waiting list regardless, in case a European tour happens.
I don't know much about shipping to and from Europe, but $100 seems pretty high. I hear $40-$60 quoted a lot.
Oh, that's quite a long time, and I couldn't pay more than 5-10 bucks for shipping as I've already borrowed money to even be able to buy the keyboard (no income).
I've PMed that guy in the thread you gave me though.
Thanks!
FWIW The shipping for the switch tester would be way less than $40 I'm sure. I thought you meant for a full-size keyboard.

West side pavilion is fine, about 15 mins away from me.
I can do weekends, Saturday around 5ish and sunday all day. Although, do you think the mall is a smart idea during the holidays? We can also do the Barnes and noble since it will be a lot calmer, but still in the same area since its next to the mall.
Westside Pavilion is perfect! Also please don't forget to ask kick since he's around UCLA in Westwood and that's pretty close.
Someone with a good camera take pics of the meetup!
And yes someone with the most name recognition should make a thread :p
Is it too late to get in on this?
Don't have a cherry, and would love to test it out.
So what's the status on hashbaz's east coast tour?
^ Great. So is the meeting for L.A. folks on for this Saturday? Please let me know.
brsp25 is shipping it today to curro123083. It was supposed to go to dewcorps next, but there was an issue with the address he gave me and he hasn't gotten back to me with clarification. So he's being skipped for now.
Late in the thread, haven't even been able to read the entire 20 pages yet, but a couple thoughts:
-Funny for a pic of the tester on a table with the tattoo artist holding the tattoo needle over it as though getting a tattoo :)
-The various pics of the tester are really awesome. Reminds me of the early iPod days when people would take pics of their iPod around the world (The pyramids, Machu Picchu, etc.)
-Not only a very helpful project for SO MANY, but also fun, and a somewhat bonding experience. Hard to always get with people met online. Even selling an item is a one-person shot not shared by many.
-Wish I could go to the meetup in L.A. You guys take pics and post a few you are proud of. REALLY proud of.
-I'll read further and see if I can get on the mailing list for the future, no rush. If so, I have opportunities for pics that will become GH standards.
-Thanks to the peeps that made this happen, and the peeps that are continuing to make it happen. This is sweet. Much better than online dating.
I am definitley in on this! Location: Vancouver, BC, Canada.
When's it coming to Canada?
Yes. I will be there! Yee.
Thanks for mentioning this to me Reaper.
I'm available till like the 20 something.
I'm in westwood. Right at UCLA
Ok thanks for the update. I'm hoping I won't have to give up my spot on the tour...I'm going out of town starting the 19th. On a positive note, turns out I live near wcass so if I do get the tester he'll get to try it out too. Plus, I'm going to be in Orlando from the 19th-23rd so I could possibly see if Jam would let me try it out if I have to forgo my spot.
Thanks for the kind words. I like that there's a little tester subcommunity developing here. That's exactly what I was going for with the pictures and the level of trust involved in this project.
I've added you to the future rounds list in the OP.
I live in Orlando and happen to be the first on the Florida list so if the switch arrives on time, we should have a small meet up after the 19th-22nd (I'm busy on the 18th and have to go to leave a few days before the 25th) if Jam and you are able to attend.
If this meetup plan doesn't work, is it cool if we route the Tester to Akimbo first so he can see it before he goes out of town?
Why? You mean skip me?
I mean do Akimbo first and come back to you, so he can have it before he leaves on the 19th.
I have to go out to town before Christmas too. Is there any reason he can't get the tester when he comes back?
I have to go out to town before Christmas too. Is there any reason he can't get the tester when he comes back?
Ah, I see. Well then let's keep the order intact, and we'll get to Akimbo when we can.
I'm actually leaving South Florida on the 19th for Orlando (Apopka more specifically). I could do a hand delivery of the tester on the 20th or 21st if that's cool with you and hasbaz. If it isn't, no biggie. I'll sit this round out.
Edit: Nvm nolliepoper...I just re-read your post from the last page...so I guess a hand delivery is out of the question for the 20th through the 22nd. I'm in Orlando from the night of the 19th through mid-day on the 23rd.
You can hand the tester to me on the 20th, I only need to try the ergo clears for a few minutes, if you don't mind meeting up around the UCF area of Orlando.
The only reason I was hoping to try the tester before I go home, is because my father and I could solder my Filco's switches if I prefer the ergo clears, during the break.
It's cool man. I don't want to put anyone out of order if they are on a schedule. Though...I could go for a Box Car Willy at Lazy Moon. Man I miss Box Car Willies.
You can go first if you don't mind meeting up with me around the UFC area no later than the 20th, I really don't mind and at the end of the day it's all up to hashbaz, he is doing all of us a favor.
I don't know what my schedule will be like in Orlando so I can't promise that I'd be able to get the tester to you by no later than the 20th. I'll just see if I can go last on the east coast tour. If not, I'll just forgo my spot on the east coast tour altogether.
And yes, hasbaz is awesome for putting this whole thing together.
I added you to the future rounds list. There are no definite plans for the next round yet, but a lot of Canadians expressed interest early on, so it will definitely make it up there before another US round happens.
...at the end of the day it's all up to hashbaz, he is doing all of us a favor.
What no tracking number to my place? I wanna know where it is... lol. I cannot wait to do a review, I was also thinking about doing a video review for a new youtube channel. I'll let everyone know if that happens.
Just received the tester! Review coming soon. There wasn't enough interest for the LA meetup so I'll be shipping to demik tomorrow or monday.
Thoughts:
browns: can baaarely tell that it's tactile... thought i would like these the most, and i'm really not sure if i do.
blues: don't think i (or wife) can stand the sound. i do like that it's light though.
blacks: too heavy
reds: i like these. i do game (not pro) but i also code... not sure if these are good for both
clears: i'm a noob so i had a hard time telling the difference between the clears and the brown lol. i could only tell when pressing verrry slowly. more tactility but also too heavy i think.
ergo clears: i liked this initially, but then i realized that it doesn't have enough force pushing the key up on release.
tacto clears: do not want - heavy
green: do not want - clicky
grey: meh... something just doesn't feel right
bonus: the rightmost ergo clear pings like crazy
Conclusion:
I think I narrowed it down to brown or red. Really need to try typing on those... so I'm hoping there's a meetup sometime. If anyone has any insight on how important tactility is, please let me know. I like the red but I feel like coming from RD's I'll have a hard time adjusting to zero tactile feedback. All I do is game and code, so if anyone also does that please let me know what you use and how you like it!
Big thanks to hashbaz and litster for this!
I love reds for coding, but they're a little too light for me when gaming (for Starcraft at least).
I'll post it as soon as I know what it is! ;)
I would like to get in on this when possible. As a new use I think it is only reasonable that I include some references. I have a high trader feed back in heatware, all positive, for forum trading under BossBorot and linked my user name here on that site as well to confirm that I am who I say I am.
Should I be deemed worthy to eventually lay my hands on it I can include around 20 o rings that I have left over from a wasd purchase so that future testers can try them out before buying.
I am located in Santa Cruz CA
hm what do you play sc with?
Blues and buckling springs.
I see. Thanks for responding! Reds are looking pretty attractive now...
Thanks to the tester, I bought a Rosewill with Reds for work! I will be getting a WASD with Blues in the summer when I build a computer, though ;D
The Fox Village Theatre is typically thought of as one of if not the best movie premiere venue in the world. For 60 years some of the biggest films in cinema have premiered at the theatre including: A Star Is Born, James Bond, JFK, Mission Impossible, Batman, Harry Potter, Independence Day, Terminator and hundreds of others. Typically the streets get shut down and are used for red carpet arrivals.
^ haha I'm there right now at Nijiya market on Sawtelle.
Anyways, hashbaz are you supposed to send me demik's address?
Aw yea if I had known earlier I may have jumped on the $80 Rosewill Red deal :(
You like it though? I'm thinking about Rosewill or WASD (they should be getting Reds this month)
Very excited to buy a keyboard when I get back from vacation. Come to think of it, I might even stumble upon some since I'm going to the land of Duckys and HK as well... but the layout will not be US I'm guessing.
I regret missing that deal, but I didn't have my hands on the tester yet so I didn't want to drop the money. I'm still waiting for it in the mail. I guess UPS doesn't ship on Saturdays (I could have sworn they did, they dropped off my the parts for my parent's build on a Saturday) so it'll be here on Monday. =). Can't wait to use it! I only got a Rosewill because it's for work anyway and I didn't want to spend more money decking it out with custom stuff, that I'll save for the my Blue board =).
Both Taiwan and Hong Kong use ANSI layout. Good luck shopping there!
Ah yea UPS doesn't do saturdays, but FedEx does. Let us know how you like it! I'm thinking either Rosewill or WASD, unless I stumble upon a better/cheaper option.
when does round 2 start? i'm definitely interested in this. my location: california, san diego area
Any chance of a tester coming up to Canada soon?

we could keep this going if the thing is still in good condition when it gets to me.
thats really close to me...

It's up to litster. A while back he was talking about doing the Canadian round while my east coast tour finishes up.
I found out about this tour on overclock.net. Could I be allowed to join a future round? I'm in Kansas.

Shipped this morning to demik! - 03110820000117305141
I'm out here in Vegas, just PM'd you hashbaz!
Why wouldn't it be in good condition? I will hunt people down if my tester is damaged!!!! :-)
Still no word on getting a tracking number? My mother is a postmaster for my city and I told her to keep her eyes peeled! lol
I sent brsp25 a follow-up PM asking for the tracking number, but I haven't heard from him in days. His last activity was on the 8th. I suspect the tester has not shipped. :(
drsp25, you are not doing yourself or others any favor. No review, no update, no posts since receiving the tester?
If this ever comes to Minnesota - I would be interested. I know a lot of people who would be interested in trying it out - especially since many don't understand why anyone would spend so much money on a keyboard...
I am very interested in getting in on this for any future rounds. I've been tempted to purchase a mechanical keyboard for years now, but with no access to try any of them, it's hard to sink $100+ into it.
I should mention that this is my first post and I just now registered. But if you can look past that, I promise to be prompt and responsive with my participation.
Located in Michigan, USA.
^ Man, I bet you get all your mail faster than everyone else or never have a package go missing on ya. =D
i received the tester
Yes! You have so many toys coming to you in such short period of time!
i'll try to get this shipped to skoobs tomorrow so he can get it before the weekend.
Added you to the wait list. Link plz? :)
Thanks!
I appreciate the concept, but wouldn't it be hard to really get a feel of the switch without actually typing on a full keyboard?
Yes, typing on three or four keys won't give you the same sense as a full keyboard. It's much, much better than nothing though.
Could I get on the waiting list as well? I promise to treat the tester with the upmost respect.
I'm not convinced yet that something shady is afoot. brsp actively sought the next address from me. I suspect college finals and/or family emergency.
But still, barring death of an immediate family member, a mob deal gone bad, or an invitation to attend Hogwarts, it's EXTREMELY bad form to keep it for this long without at least a PM. I will still be pissed if he says he was busy with (non-magical) finals.
i dont think having finals or lots of work is much of an excuse. i just finished my finals, and even when i was studying, there's time for breaks to browse around a bit. same thing with working, you're bound to have breaks. if you have time to eat or take a ****, then you have time to send a simple PM on here. if he couldn't do something so simple, he shouldn't have signed up to get the tester in the first place
Same here. I would pitch in a bit to get the tester back.
I would love to get in on this, I recently lost my Tt Meka1 and am searching for the one keyboard I can drool over. Let me know what I gotta do :)
i has the tester! a big thank you to Lister and Demik.
so far i like greens the best. i think i could easily teach myself not to bottom out on greens.
Skoobs, any pictures or review?
is the tester going to lister after me?
I assume so, unless litster says different.
Awesome idea. Sorry to hear one tester is MIA. I'd love to be added to the list.
I would also like to be added to the list if possible. I'm kinda stuck on blue, brown, clears from reading which doesn't mean much since I haven't actually tried them. I'm in Los Angeles,CA.
Edit: I love in Ontario btw.

It got stolen?

I just submitted a negative iTrade feedback for this f'ing jerk. Here is a link so you can give him a piece of you mind.
http://geekhack.org/itrader_feedback.php?u=14599
Yup. So much for trusting the community. Especially sad that it happened on the maiden voyage. :-/
Yeah I'm done giving this guy the benefit of the doubt. He's getting blasted on iTrader, in case he ever decides to show his face around here again.
I already have a tester keyboard built that will start making the rounds here in around a month or so after it finishes at Overclockers.com. However due to hashbaz's tester being stolen I will only send it out here to members who are willing to pay a reserve until it gets to the next person.I will probably do that as well I dont know how ever how I will place the switches or what reserve would be ideal. Also though about custom WASD caps to match the switches.

There are only a few acceptable reasons for him keeping the tester. He is dead. Or he is in a comma. Or he has gone crazy.
Hashbaz, you have his full name. Did you try looking him up on facebook or linkedin? I like the idea that Talfrey giving him a visit.
I still have that chunk of PCB with a single Cherry Brown switch that I can send back to you if you can use it.

There's a Facebook account with the right name with a "lives in" city listed that is less than three miles from brsp's address. No wall activity since September though. The mother of this guy is active on Facebook however, so I guess I could try to contact her though that would be kind of creepy and I wouldn't expect a response.
We need to send an armada. People see an armada, they know you mean business.
Someone PM me the details and I will attempt to contact brsp25...
hasbaz, not to be a downer but I think I will pass on this tester now. Sorry, you could add someone to my slot. I couldn't wait any longer and got a WASD with blues. so no need for a tester right now. Thanks so much though and maybe in the future I will do it
curro, do you still not want to try the tester?
If not, am I next in line?
Hey, its been a while since I have checked in. Is the tester still at brsp25, and is there anything I have missed? I also want to check that Hash has my correct address, don't want to get skipped again ;)
In my prayers dude. Sorry for thinking something else was up.
And ignore Internet Idiots. Geekhack just isn't what it used to be.
did you put me down on your list hash
Hi. I'm Brad's brother. I spent the day with him today. I reminded him about the package he forgot to ship. He looked disappointed in himself but it quickly turned into a deep shrug and then a laugh...
TL;DR, but sounds like you've been through a lot brsp! sorry to hear
so Hashbaz, for a local anime/gaming convention at the end of May i'm doing a "Mechanical keyboards 101" panel, and i'm thinking about making my own pad, or some form of switch tester for the event, any tips? are there other numpads I could use? Thanks so much! maybe if you're doing round 2/3 around may we could work something out?
really neat project dude! keep at it!
So the 3 day duration, Picture, thoughts etc still applies?
Day9 reference numberj?Of course.
Yup.
Since it's been a while now and most of us had presumed this project dead, I'd like to get confirmation that those on the list are still interested and actively following the thread. Give a shout out if you still want to give the tester a try.
dewcorps - CONFIRMED

Oy...mark me as confirmed please.
HOW am I not confirmed but of course!
Well I said if only there was..
Interested in trying out the various switches. From eastern Idaho.
I'm still interested in trying this out. I have moved since we started, so I'm sending a pm with the new address.
Ha, yeah you missed a lot. Short version: we thought brsp had stolen the tester, but we learned just the other day that he had a medical emergency (that is still ongoing) before he could send the tester on. His brother found and forwarded it to curro. I'll have him send it to you next. I'm PMing you the address I have.
I received the tester yesterday night, The postmaster (my mother) forget to bring it home. I will give it a test and send it out on Saturday to the next person. Thanks Hashbaz!
Don't forget to take pictures!
Hey hashbaz, I found a relatively cheap cherry 'board with blues that I'm going to pull the switches off of for my phantom, so I guess I'm going to give the tester a pass for now ^^. Could you go ahead and take my name off the list for this run so that the people after me can get their hands on the tester faster?
curro, what's the story bro? Any pics? Have you sent the tester on to dewcorps?
Reds
Blues
Browns
Ergo
Clears
Blacks
Curro, very well written review. Best wishes to your grandma.
Thanks curro, no worries about keeping the tester too long. Grandmas are more important than keyboards. And thanks for the great review. Blues and reds are my favorites too. :)
Don't browns require less actuation force than blues?
I'm very interested in taking part in a future round! Grand Rapids MI, USA.
Already have blues and buckling springs. Need to try out some quieter alternatives.

Pics or it didn't happen?
No need to GTFO.
Tester captured where I row from.

Well there are five more people to go for my tester. That's another three weeks at least. I don't know what litster's plans are with his tester. I suspect he's pretty consumed with his Phantom project for now.
Sorry for double post... Just wanna say I think it's awesome you guys are doing this. Really neat and brings a sense of community to everyone!
Nice picture! where is it?Lake Norman area, NC.
Man... 5 people on the waiting list are in Los Angeles. Makes me want to try having a meetup again but I'm discouraged from last time :pout:
What happened? Wouldn't be a bad idea, just not trivial to coordinate X many people in a city like LA :/
Here was the thread: http://geekhack.org/showthread.php?24752-Los-Angeles-Meetup!

Hehe, I am pretty busy with the Phantom GB and trying to get a batch of acrylic keyboard cases made. Hashbaz, if you don't mind organizing the tour again, I can just ship mine out for another queue.
Like omg omg omg...one more day till nolliepopper gets the tester then it's on to me.
Erm yeah, about that. I kinda told nollipopper to send it to Jam first since they're both in the Orlando area. Sorry, I know that sucks for you. :-/
Whoa, some posts on this thread were made, deleted, and then restored (which deleted the other branch of posts that came after the initial deletion). Geekhack is pretty f'd lately.
Hello, I plan to ship it out to Jam and write the review tomorrow.
i dare you to take it to the Princess Tea.

Brown: This is my favorite switch. Lightwieght force, and very small tactile bump.
Blue: A little more of a initial bump to overcome next to browns, but just too noisy for my suroundings and could potientially cause some double tapping issues.
Black: Great response on the linear switch but may be too heavy for typing.
Red: Perfect lightweight force on a linear switch, but I have no interest in using linear switches.
Clear: Very heavy and a larger tactile bump compared to browns.
Ergo Clear: Just like browns with a bigger tactil bump except something about the spring doesn't feel right to me, as if double tapping could cause some problems.
(Attachment) 40027
I see. Maybe once modded, the weaker spring is not as powerful as the original Clear spring to push the stem back up because the bump is a bigger?
I was just in Orlando, should have had a Tester party.
So, is there a projected start date for round 2?
I signed up months ago and will promise a turn-around time of 48 hours.
Thanks for doing all this!
I'll start working out a Canadian route for litster's tester soon. When mine gets back to me (2 more weeks maybe?) I'll put it back out on another US tour.
Canadians, is there something similar to a USPS flat rate box that is cheap and easy for shipping to each other inside Canada?
Sorry for the FAQ, but this thread has so many entries and so far I can't find out how to actually get on the list to receive the tester.
I'm in southern Maine and would love the change to try it out, with a one-day turnaround.
Switch tester is a great idea; thanks for doing this.
Browns= Gritty reds...not smooth at all. Very unsatisfying.
I have to say that trying cherry switches side by side with buckling springs sealed the deal for me. There is no comparison to buckling springs. Every cherry switch fell short.
so to get back on topic, i would have to say that the key tester helped me to find the right switch for me – even though that switch is not a Cherry.
Thanks hashbaz!
I have been on the waiting list since Thanksgiving.
If no one has ripped you off by now, why should they start?
So We have to trust who mail it to you and who you will being mailing to?
If someone really want to keep it for himself, it would just say he never got it and it is last person's fault. Or pretend he send it to the next person.
Yeah. You still lose some money with PayPaling back and forth (they take their cut); and frankly, I think y'all are doing us a great service with the testers, and I'm willing to pay a small fee for the privilege of benefitting from the builders' time and money spent. If they get a small reward for it, I consider it a "rental" fee.
When the tester goes missing, $30 likely won't pay for it, where as the donation model could.
Instinctively, I'd rather send away $5 than $30, but of course that's short-term thinking...! :)
I'll roll either way, I just thought I'd put it out there.
So We have to trust who mail it to you and who you will being mailing to?

I am going up to Vancouver, BC this Friday. If you can get me the first person's name and address, I can get the Canada tour started right away. It would be great if it is someone in the Vancouver/West Vancouver/Richmond area. Let's start from the west coast and move toward east.
Sign me up for round two, as well. [Baton Rouge, LA]
I'm new to the GH community, but I'm trying to dive in where I can between work and home. These keyboards are pulling me in quicker than I thought. I just got a Leopold TKL with browns and I'm eyeing the Filco Maj, now; just don't know if I want to stick with brown switches or try something else. Sadly, there aren't many places to test boards around here.
And I'm fine with whatever method for 'trust' you decide on.
Oh, cool, I just realized - I can take a picture of the tester at the M&M's factory.
Sweet/Wild Cherry - Prunus Avium - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prunus_avium
Interested in this when she starts making the rounds again.
I too am very interested in this.
I would also like to try this out. Fairfax, VA.
you think you guys could hurry up a little
Since this thread has gotten huge, would it be better to start a new thread for the Spring 2012 Tour?
Whats the status on lister's tester for the Canadian tour?
I sent out for addresses a while ago, so I just have to figure out the route and give litster the first address. I'll do that tonight.
I'm interested -- Hattiesburg, Mississippi, USA
As for how interested? I've only ever gotten to try Blue, Red, and Black Cherry MX switches... and I had to take time out of a Skiing Vacation in Colorado to find a MicroCenter in Denver to do that. From what I can tell no one remotely close to here sells mechanicals apart from maybe a Razer at a Best Buy in another town.
I expect it'll be a while (if ever), but looking forward to it. Brilliant idea dude!
Registered just to see if I could get on the list as well. I'm in Houston.
Been lurking for a long time now and really want to purchase a mechanical... Is there a post requirement for this? If not, I would like to join :)
I live in Los Angeles.
Name suggestion: The CherryPicker
Hi, is it possible for me to enter also? I live in NJ.
