Title: [IC] Something nice for Melissa
Post by: hashbaz on Mon, 14 November 2011, 16:22:15
Geekhackers,

Melissa from SP does a lot for our community.  It wouldn't take very many of us chipping in to get her a really nice thank-you gift.  Who's in?  And what should we get her?

I get the feeling that SP would go under if it wasn't for GH.

I'm thinking something like a $50 or $100 gift card to her favorite local Spa treatment.  I work with all women, and they like that kind of crap.  I've got my $5.00 here.

Technically hes not a vendor; Clickclack's caps are more like art done on a retail-scale. Sort of like Etsy stuff.

Technically the only Vendor in that love triangle would be EK.

ClickClack manufactures his keys.
Signature Plastics manufactures all sorts of plastic goodies, including keys.
EliteKeyboards sells other people's stuff.

Therefore, taking a ClickClack as a gift would be taking the manufactured item, which SP cannot and does not make and therefore would be outside of the scope of a "conflict".

BOOOOOOOOOM Headshot.

A conflict is something that occurs in the merchandise world when a member of a company wears/uses/owns an item which is identical or close to one produced by a competitor. This, however, would not be occurring if a ClickClack were bought/given to an SP employee because neither company/group makes like-items.

I don't understand the continuous corrections without consideration of context.  I never claimed there was a conflict, nor that ClickClack was a vendor. You can only get ClackFactory caps from EliteKeyboards (new) so Elitekeyboards IS the implied vendor.

RC, have you ever taken an online Asperger's test?

Just to play devil's advocate here, but why not get something keyboard related? This is Geekhack after all, what else are we even remotely qualified to deal with? Besides, SP employees don't necessarily get a nice board to use. Just because they manufacture keycaps doesn't mean their IT dept goes around dropping three figure boards at every work station. They're probably all using some $15 cheapy that was bundled with their PCs. Someone nonchalantly ask. And then send over a Leo so they start making caps for it.

That was....I dunno.... 6 months ago?

I thought six months ago was when everything shipped for GB3?

Either way, I now have to babysit my order to make sure we don't end up with the backwards version of LoD and it has to be done WITHOUT test prints because she quoted me $65 for those.

Hmm...I suck at photoshop so maybe someone can make a design in my stead.  Why not give her something material PLUS a placard for her wall...we could take a piece of brass and have it etched with a keyboard saying something silly like "Melissa, thank you for all the help! - the members of geekhack.org" she could hang it in her office so that everytime she sees it she will be reminded of us freaks^^.

Something like this: http://www.premier-engraving.co.uk/engraved-brass-plaques.html

we would have to find an engraver in the states I think. Id be in with 5$ for sure.

But Raganorock still wants me to send a pic of the two down rainbow keys he sent by mistake.  That's not Melissa's fault.

Lol I'll take that bet. That it will never happen I mean. I pride myself on having a stable, accurate timeline for my GBs.

How about you just send her a chunk of wood with all the keys they've screwed up over the years epoxied to it. "Never Forget" would be carved into the bottom. It would be cheap and serve as a reminder to them to get their act together. People could contribute all of their screwed up keycaps so that it would be from the whole community.

How does this sound?

SP messes up keys, it's true.  But Melissa herself is a total boss.  Dealing with our finicky needs probably takes up way more time than SP's regular corporate customers.

Okay, pried a little bit to see if this would work, and I think I found the right gift, because this is unacceptable:

I am actually using the wireless HP keyboard that came with my computer... Standard cheapo :)

I'm buying her a keyboard. The question is what, and what keyset/custom keys do we include on it. Obviously everyone is free to contribute to the project but don't feel obligated.

I'm thinking something full size, clean and simple like a Leopold with browns or blues. She probably needs the tenkey for work, and she didn't say noise was an issue, (though it could be and she just didn't say lol) but we don't want to get her a Realforce because then she can't make/use the keys they've made for us on it. I was then thinking we put some tasteful and clean keyset on it and give a few novelty keys with for her to put on where she wants. Thoughts? I have some unsold RA sets that I could give one to her, but it'd look cleaner on a white Filco or something, which would be more expensive.

What about a full size Rosewill with cherry mx browns (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16823201042).  I've got some hammer-sickle and alien novelty keycaps as well as an extra black on yellow "Geekhack" keycap if you want to throw them on the board for her.

Great idea Rag.  Needless to say, I am in.  A CCnG set would probably be hard to get, but they look fantastic on a full-size black keyboard.

I can donate a few of the various novelty keys we've had made.

^The CCnG set has been the pinnacle of SP doubleshots imo.  They turned out fantastic.

this is a fantastic idea, but can someone get rid of the stupid rosewill logo on it and replace it a geekhack logo before it's given to her?

I actually personally don't hate the rosewill logo. It reminds me of baseball shirts. I hate baseball though, so I don't know why I like being reminded of baseball shirts. weird. either way, yes, in this case removing that logo and putting on a geekhack one is a good idea.

we need to source a ccng + 10key set for this. does anyone have one they would be willing to part with?

even if she didnt say noise was an issue, blues in any kind of office setting is way too loud.  Any other switch would be fine.

some1 PM her and randomly ask what her favorite color is.  maybe its red and white lol

for various reasons, i don't think she particularly wants to be reminded of the red and white set right now...

touche kawa, touche.  well, for a girl i think a nice rainbow 33 pbt + nyan cat + random novelty keys would be mighty nice. I know im making generalizations, but I dont see a woman wanting a CCnG set.

Just a thought:  if she's a wireless keyboard user then she may not want a cabled keyboard at all.  I know many people like this.  Maybe someone should ask her.

By the way, I would kill for a wireless TKL version of a Filco, WASD Keyboards, or anything decent with blue switches.

yes, maybe we should also give her one of those "math is hard" barbies :/

OK anyway, we have sourced the ccng set. looking for novelty keys; in particular, the best novelty keys that she's helped produce. (billiards maybe?)

Completely honest, I saw this a few days ago, didn't know who she was, so I didn't care. But after the last day or two, she let me purchase an individual CCnG key from them wand was so helpful and quick to respond that I definitely want to contribute something to her. I can donate $5 to the cause?

well i bet you a lot more than 4/5 men give zero ****s about any type of keyboards... so what's your point? we're all weirdos anyway.

i agree most of us are wrong in the head for spending so much on boards/keys :P.  my point is that its a  logical assumption that a female is more likely than not, interested in colorful objects vs green on cream,  thats all.  i just made a suggestion, your acting like i said something incredibly offensive, lol

you are too biased!  thats like saying if I were chick is def be a lesbian, hahaha
