Title: Zowie with Linux
Post by: codingmonkey on Fri, 18 November 2011, 08:58:06
Just unpacked my new Zowie (Cherry MX Brown - German Layout). This experience made me so mad, that I now have a geekhack account to rage about it... :-)

I'm a native Debian Linux user for more than 10 years. Never had trouble with a HID device in my whole life... After plugging in the Zowie via USB, a few keys (Strg/Ctrl, Win, Shift,...) simply don't work. Had a look at the keycodes this board sends. There is no (not even a minimal) delay between press and release of the key. Release even gets send while I still keep pressing down the key. This results in "press doesn't get recognized at all"!

On Linux everything works fine with PS2. But I bought this brown board for work and the stupid IBM box i'm working on don't have a ps2 port anymore...

Will try to find a workaround when getting home from work.... For now I guess I just have to let my anger out on my coworkers.... :-(

That is bad, is there another box you can try it on?

Sure, but only Linux boxes. That's how I confirmed that everything is running fine with PS2.
Problems seem to occur on all Distributions. But didn't tested with something newer then kernel 2.6.38 for now.

I think applying the same 'fix' as for somebody with problems on OsX with some board should work.

Usb to ps2 adapter and then another one from ps2 back to usb. Not the perfect solution but it should work.

I am in mobile and cant find the topic about that atm but you should be able to find it easily.

Don't get too serious about it... I suspect Ripster is just making fun of its weird brand name.

It works like a charm. Used a Sharkoon Converter. The first one that arrived this morning.

Thanks again, for your suggestions.
