There are some really dirt cheap microsoft natural 4000s on ebay right now....
Not so cheap for me due to international postage, but there are 3 available BIN for $5.00 + P&H for anyone stateside they may be able to pick one up for next to nothing:

I would be tempted to pick up some for mucking around with doing custom ergo boards and shake the cobwebs off my old EE skills, but sadly postage is $45 to australia. USA postage via UPS ground on the other hand is quite reasonable.

They're rubber dome IIRC? What kind of mod are you thinking about?

Although if i did that i would definitely just get some PCBs made up instead of all that wiring and the associated headaches.

You may want to note that it's AU only. And it's also cheaper to pick them up for free on Craigslist, or pay next to nothing at recyclers'.

If you were to buy it essentially for just the plastic shell as you'd have pcb's made, why not have pcb's made and then buy (or use) a 3d printer to print the case? Esp. if you don't use a metal plate.
