Title: Looking for someone who can design a case for the Phantom
Post by: TheProfosist on Tue, 22 November 2011, 10:08:44
I am looking for someone who is capable of designing a case that fits all versions of the Phantom. The type of case we are looking at is talked about here http://tinyurl.com/85ma22f . If you have other ideas that would be simpler, easier, or cheaper please bring them up.

I am working on something like that in 3D since yesterday with Google SketchUp.
I am no pro, but I think I could do it, but it takes time, because I am working a lot...
AND I would need some numbers because I don't own a Filco! =)

Sounds great any help is appreciated sadly I dont have a Filco TKL either, lets hope we can get some measurements from someone who does.

I started with the plate for the phantom, but I need following sizes:
- distance between 2 holes for the plate mounted switches
- distance between the key blocks (main block, F-Keys, arrow block)
- distance between the key rows
- size of the plate, holes for screws etc.

After that I would go on with the case.

The size of the plate is still not decided I think, is it?
I dont know about the pate but I would assume that it would be the same size as a Fico's since its meant to fit in that case. Also dont forget that this case needs to fiot all layouts especially 7bits because that is the one that you can not use a stock Filco case for. The updated 7bit layout looks like:

I still have no one who supports me with the dimensions...
So this is delayed until I find someone who is willing to help.

Sorry I have been trying to get measurements but no one that has a Filco has taken the time to do it.

I could do measurements.  But there are a lot of numbers to collect.  Even with all the measurements you need, I don't think you can realistically design a case without actually having a Filco keyboard in front of you.

I was going to do this once I have my Phantom PCB...if I can get exact measurements I could get started now.

Would you use a cardboard case?  ;)

I spent the whole day on Thanksgiving to make this.  Then yesterday the whole day putting it in QCAD as I learn how to use it.  I am almost done, but I need to draw out one layer to make room for the teensy controller.  Then I need to find a place that can do laser cutting on cardboards and/or acrylic.

Edit: Any recommendation for shops that can do lasercutting?

Haha nice I actually would use that until something more permanent can be arranged since I sold my Filco TKL.

I know a company in Washington that does plastic(http://www.tapplastics.com/)  They said if we had a 3d rendering of it in like autocad we could maybe do it for the phantom.

I think they can do the acrylic after you have the CAD file, Probably going to take a few prototype to get it 100% correct but you can just split that cost with everyone that gets the casing

I send you CAD files both for the plate and the PCB, if that won't be enough to design a case, I don't think anything will be...

I'm really interested in the project, but since I don't already have a filco tkl, i'm hesitant to move forward with the thought of having to harvest a filco, or find my own case source.  If someone puts a nifty case together, I may jump off the fence.

Im still looking into using a PLU as it will be significantly cheaper and youll even have some switches you can reuse. This is a great idea but significantly more costly than I had originally thought.

That cardboard case makes me want to do a keyboard based upon danbo. (http://www.flickr.com/photos/roberthannink/5739770461/in/photostream)

Seeing as cardboard is actually pretty resilient except for water, it should actually hold up fairly decently.  Now if only WASD had light brown keys to etch for me, then my pocket would have way too much trouble containing my money.

The more I look at the acrylic case, the more I think it looks weird.  Then I realized because it is so flat, and the front is so high comparing to the actual Filco case.

I don't like it!!!!

Well, I think its pretty awesome.  It is an ACRYLIC CASE!  But, I can see what you mean about the height.  I don't think I would want to use a keyboard with a front that high.  Not without a pretty big palm rest and some chair adjustments.
